You have cueball in hand anywhere on the table.

I went the same way as you. Even though the 14 is a little high and the 11 seems like not a great key ball. After the 12, the rest sort of flows.

I prefer this:
http://CueTable.com/P/?@4AQuc3DHFx3FPsq3HXeX4KArh4LTUf3MDLP3NELJ3OHPh2PK UG3QSVT3RWYP3aPsq3acIq3achw3achw3cXeX3ccIq3jHPh4jd fs2kKUG3kPDY3kSVT3lSVT3lXFF3layL3lWQP3mWYP3mJsd3mF lk4mEEa@4AQuc3DHFx4KArh4LTUf3MDLP3NELJ4PEEa3QCgX4R PHQ4UQuc4Ucxt4fArh2fdYE3iELJ2idYE2ieGC4kEEa3kCXX3l CgX4lOyP4lPHQ4mPHQ4mCnr4mQQE@3DHFx4LTUf3MDLP4PQQE4 QRQv4gTUf4gcpv3hDLP2hdhB4kQQE4kSnN4kRQv4lRQv3lAqW3 lAhO@4ACpe4BCpA3CCYA3DHFx4EFbe3FChe4GBjO4HAMA4IAEe 3JFSe4KEMO3LBKO3MDvO4NBal3OBJl3PAhD@

my key thoughts:
1. The shot with the most movement from the 15 to the 1 plays on several different balls so even though the cue ball is traveling a long distance there is a lot of room for error.
2. The last two shots are virtually stop-shots.
3. All of the shots are short and easy.
4. I prefer the 4 over the 14 as I think the 14 is too high might just skim the top of the pack. I know the cue ball will hit the meat of the pack off the 4, but I prefer break shots that I have to punch with a little draw like that.

Hey Pepper,

While I like your 'Run this' series, could you try to make some up that involve cluster play? They wouldn't have to be about the entire run out, just how to read a cluster, how you would go into it and what your general plan is from there. I think that this 'Break this' type series might fill in a gap that your 'Run This' series doesn't seem to cover.

Maybe if I ever get the chance to play some I'll post an interesting layout that I come across along with the results of my decision at the time.

Here's hoping all your run-outs look boring and simple.

Have not looked at any other post yet... so here goes my first thoughts... be nice since I am new to the game of 14.1. Play mostly 1P. I try to keep cue ball movement to a minimum, but really liked the 12-13-4 sequence for my break shot.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!

Could the similarity in our run outs be due to the fact that we both prefer one pocket? I think playing one pocket is even better than 14.1 at teaching you to keep things as simple as possible because the consequences are usually more severe when you blunder.

I'm no 14.1 expert, I tend to see things more as an 8 baller, but I would have taken the 14 ball first up the top, as it's the problem ball, and if I don't get good on it, I might be forced to move the 4 ball.

A couple of you played for the 14 after the 15. This could be the breakdown shot as I see it, if you don't get good position. All other balls seem pretty easy to work around.

I thought the same thing when I went back and saw your post... only difference is the starting shot corner vs side. I guess we could claim that great minds think alike... at least that is going to be my story

I agree that clusters would be great to include. I've included them a couple of times. The problem is we all see them breaking apart differently. But I'll post one on the next layout and see what happens.

I think someone with a decent table and decent cloth would have to be willing to post the cluster series and the exact results of going into them at certain speeds and angles and spins.

Nice runs. For kicks, I'm going to use Colin's thought about getting rid of the 14 for this one. I like the idea of reducing congestion, and taking the 14 out would help to do that.
So here goes:

By the way, how does everyone like having ball in hand on these layouts? I figure it simulates where you would have left the cueball on the shot before the layout, and it allows for more creativity.

Ball in hand certainly leads to a much wider and diverse set of options. Its a good thing for individual thought, and on the other hand, having the cue ball set can also be fun in having everyone start with many less variables for comparison reasons.

There is so much personal preference involved with picking break shots especially with BIH. My preference is drawn much more to the 14 ball than the 4.

I seem to have problems with good yields with break balls low like the 4. They also have me forcing the shot more. The way that 11 ball lies, that 14 ball is a rock crusher with only a slight chance of a cross side scratch which is easily overcome with a tad of inside. The yield is huge and the CB is out of harms way. At least that's the kind of shot I like. :)

Good point. I like the yield I get with high break shots too.
As for the ball in hand, maybe what we can do is for each layout have 2 scenarios. I'll post a cueball position for everyone to work from, and for variety, we can have ball in hand for another run at the same layout.
