View Full Version : TAR: Side Pockets Showdown; Schmidt vs Kirkwood and Bartram vs Dechaine
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3229/2649287140_2df7de4fb9_o.jpg
We are going back to Side Pockets for an Action double header featuring 3 road warriors and our Action All Around Champion. It all starts July 23rd with Chris Bartram taking on Mike Dechaine in a $10,000 entry, 10 Ball, Race to 100 over two days.
Chris is a well known road man and gambler who has a reputation for grinding out long sets and fighting hard for the money. He is taking on young upstart Mike "The Pain" Dechaine from Maine. Mike is a great young talent who is ready to test himself in the fire of high dollar action. The match up between these two should see a battle of wills between two tough competitors. Playing the race to 100 format in two days will bring stamina into the equation as well. Time for talking is over. It's on.
The second part of this Action double header features former U.S. Open Champion and current Action All Around Champion John Schmidt going head to head with Jason Kirkwood. Jason is considered by many to be one of the most underrated players in the game. Anyone who has seen him in action knows exactly where he rates. He is a monster. Winner of numerous bar table titles and countless action matches on the road, Jason is coming out of the shadows to take on John in a $10,000 entry, 10 ball, race to 100 over the weekend.
James "Duff" Doran, owner of Side Pockets in North Kansas City is very graciously hosting this event. Side Pockets is an awesome room with great food, friendly staff and very receptive atmosphere for action :D We can't wait to get back to KC and get it fired up.
Both matches will be played on a Diamond 9 foot Pro Am. Diamond has been a TAR supporter from the beginning and we are very greatful. It is a pleasure to work with a company that sets the standard of excellence in the industry.
As always the BCA Pool Leagues and www.playbca.com are with us for this event and we are excited to continue our partnership with Mark Griffin and the whole BCAPL staff. Once again we are lucky enough to be involved with the class of the industry.
Ken Schuman is flying in on his own dime to help us with the commentary and we can't thank him enough for his knowledge, skill and insight in the booth.
If you are in or around KC on July 23rd-27th stop in and sweat some great action by some of the toughest players in the world. If you can't make it to Side Pockets you can watch it LIVE on our streaming pay per view on www.theactionreport.com. The PPV price will be announced soon, we are trying to come up with a creative way to make it easy for everyone to see all the action they want.
TAR especially wants to thank all the players and their sponsors for working with us to put this on. It takes time, effort and money from all parties concerned to make one of these go and without their support and help it wouldn't happen.
See you all at Side Pockets in a couple of weeks. This is going to be a blast.

I will entertain some rail bets from my friends that I made previous bets with. I like Mike Dechaine after what I saw him do in LA. I also like Kirkwood. Nothing against the opponents. I just happen to like Mike and Kirkwood's time is long in coming in nationwide recognition.

This one is gonna be a good one. Some might or might not think Kirkwood can get there. I can't recall seeing him miss a ball myself however. Bartum is always playing hard and focused. Mike is trying to fire at everybody. Its gonna be a good one.

I am hyped for this one. John's 10 ball game is strong and Kirkwood is kind of coming out the shadows on this one. A lot of people who havent seen him play will get a big surprise. It will be a great match.
Bartram and Dechaine will finally get to getting it. LOL. I can't wait.

Two GREAT Match-Ups here! The TAR guys do it again! Both are tough matches to bet on, but I will offer my opinion only.
I like John in the first match and I'll tell you why. He is playing regularly now, so he's in good stroke and he seems to like the TAR format. He has played in these marathon before so he knows what to expect and how to prepare. Jason is kind of the X Factor, a great player, especially in money matches. I don't think the bet, or the situation will faze him. It all comes down to who plays better those three days. I just like John's overall game a little better right now. If it was on a Diamond 7', I might be going with Jason, but it's not.
In the prelim (which could be a feature itself) I lean slightly to Mike D. He is anxious to prove himself to the pool world. He seems quite willing to take on the big guns wherever he finds them (i.e. Ernesto in L.A.) and the size of the bet does not faze him either. Mike has loads of talent and is IMO the best of the new breed of young guns. Yes, I rate him over Justin Bergman, John Morra and Mitch Ellerman. They don't want any part of him. That being said, Chris is the more seasoned player in all respects, and may hold up better over the long haul. Mike has had his ups and downs in money matches already. Chris is a steadier performer.
All and all, two very close matches. Once again, hats off to TAR for making it happen. Isn't it amazing how two guys (Justin and Chad) with limited resources can trump a billionaire (TruDo) over and over again. Talk about the underdog whipping the big dog, I love the back story! Keep it up guys!

Lets just get the lines set and start stirring it up.
I'm standing in line to get the line. The following is not a bet offer, but my thoughts on the matches (no disrespect meant to any participant)
Match 1
Chris Bartrum is and has been one of the nation's premier gamblers for quite some time. Bartrum is no stranger to long grueling sets and this format favors this workhorse over alot of thoroughbreds.
Mike Dechaine is young, inexperienced and full of talent. I have heard of Dechaine playing jam up in short bursts, but not a word about staying in-it-to-win-it for the long term. I am sure Dechaine has an amazing gear, but can he keep the clutch from slipping.
No slight to Mike and I'm not saying he's a major dog here, but I believe the edge and the line has to favor Bartrum
Match 2
John Schmidt has already played two of these three day TAR events. He has been playing phenomenal pool lately and alot of 10 ball. Harriman's prodding of John may also motivate him in this match.
Jason Kirkwood has been possibly the best bar table 9 ball player for some time now. Kirkwood never gives up, plays jam up, and always comes to put up. I definitely think Kirkwood is making every preparation for this match and comes in on fire. My concern is the break in 10 ball will not be what he has been accustomed to for the last 8 years and may pose a mental problem as well as a physical one on the table. The switch to the 9 footer is no stranger to Kirkwood, but again is not where his mastery has laid for the last number of years.
I have to give the edge to John here, but I believe Kirkwood may come through early and often. I expect Kirkwood to run more racks overall.
Again this is all just my pandering and is in no way to discredit the amazing level of play of each of these players, but this puts everything out there to be discussed.
Now, let's bet it up

Appreciate the vote of confidence Jay but we dont do that. Whatever guys want to do amongst themselves is up to them. We dont make lines, we dont hold money, we do not promote the rail gambling on the matches. Whatever goes on outside of our control is just that , outside of our control. All we do is put on two man tournaments.
The fastest way to kill TAR is to get involved in anything besides putting the matches on.

I will take Kirkwood if, since this being Kansas City, TAR will let Danny Harriman be the referee for the match. He can rack the balls and make all calls, allow timeouts, etc. I will even buy Danny a referees shirt, I saw them at Dick's Sporting Goods over the weekend.
On the Bartrum-Dechaine, I haven't formed an opinion yet. In my mind, both of these players are overrated - by themselves and by others. Bartrum plays a lot of big money matches, but he loses his share & I think when I have heard him say come play me or Kirkwood, he is not in Kirkwood's class. Dechaine, I know has been itching to play since he found himself a stakehorse. Will he be like Morra and too inexperienced for the big money? Will the money not effect him cause he is getting staked? Is Bartrum getting staked? JCIN, can you tell us - out of these 4, who put up their own money?

We do not discuss who or where the players entry fees come from. Frankly it isn't anyone else's business and some of the people we deal with prefer that things are kept discreet.
If people want that information they are going to have find it somewhere else because we don't talk about it publicly.

First of all when I played ernesto I cut him some slack and we only played six hours a day. Thats nothing. We were betting 7500 a piece ten ball. The table racked like shit and nothing was happening off the break for both of use. Two hours into day three Ernesto pulled out his money. I wasn't happy but I was in his neck of the woods, so what was I going to do. With the crowd in his favor and him asking me to step out side, I decided it would be best if I let him quit. Thats how it went. It was a good game and who knows the outcome. He plays great and had me at one point.

Are you trying to knock your own action? I'm just wondering. In the beginning, the woofing was great. It got your name out there and let people know you were serious. I'm not trying to tell you what to do, but after that you should let the games stand as they end and the reputation work itself out. That is if you want to make money gambling. Why tell people you could give a guy the 7,8 when he will play you even to begin with? Beat him even and then give the weight... keep quiet about your matches and you make get some easier ones.

So you are saying that Sean Connery is one of the stake horses for the upcoming matches, or is it Roger Moore?

First of all when I played ernesto I cut him some slack and we only played six hours a day. Thats nothing. We were betting 7500 a piece ten ball. The table racked like shit and nothing was happening off the break for both of use. Two hours into day three Ernesto pulled out his money. I wasn't happy but I was in his neck of the woods, so what was I going to do. With the crowd in his favor and him asking me to step out side, I decided it would be best if I let him quit. Thats how it went. It was a good game and who knows the outcome. He plays great and had me at one point.
This is also a perfect example of what makes TAR great & why I loved/appreciated my experience with them. Put up the $$$ and then no B.S. (of course, we are only hearing 'The Pain' side of the story and we know there are 3 sides to every story). Anyways, 'The Pain' will realize how great TAR is not only because they bring pool out to the public by webcasting and making big matches happen but also what they do for the players. No B.S. Just let you gamble & put all the other issues that happen aside. I am gonna bet that Ernesto could not have gotten JCIN or BigNasty to take the post money down.

Mike after what I saw you got a lot of respect from me. I am really disappointed how it turned out. Disappointed because I am a big big fan of Ernesto's. And for you to have to go through that I just am a bit ashamed to how you were treated. Yes you were out of your neck of the woods. The crowd was against you. But still you came with the best of it. Even Ernesto's friends and fans after the first day was saying "Ernesto's got no chance" or "Well he's getting old". But on the second day Ernesto came in rested and showed everyone why he is a great champion in the first place and took a 6 game deficit into a 13 game swing in his favor. He looked strong. Hombre Guapo. On the second day it looked like you were in trouble. But you never waivered in your determination.
You were ready on the 3rd day. How it ended up I dont know. But I know you were on the road. You had expenses. You had lost some on the rail on that 13 game downswing. The bet was made and like in a tournament you cant just ask for your entry fee back when you are on the winners side. You just have to play or forfeit. Now this was an agreed match so I dont know what the terms were so Im not going to say anything negative. But when a bet is made it should be followed through on particularly if the money has been put up with a non aligned party. If the resolution cannot be made because of whatever reasons. Illness, Hurricane Katrina (act of god), or that the race cannot be met. Their should be some agreement by both parties. Either hold the money and play at another time. Or change the particulars of the match. A race instead of a "ahead" situation.
To just up and say I aint playing is not right in my opinion. I think some kind of offer should have been made. Even one of compensation. Some kind of out.
A couple of races for 1K maybe.
I know Ernesto to be a man of his word. And I respect him in every way. And you have undoubtedly gone out of your way to show him this respect. I just wish this respect was given to you.
Whatever the case may be you will come out of this in the long run better. This is not going to be the worse thing that will happen to you in your pool career. You and I know that. But this is the kind of seasoning you will need. Yeah they call you a young gun. And "the kid". But after what I saw in my limited way. You were a man.
If in any way I have the facts wrong I apologize. Im going on what I saw and heard. I was not directly involved in the bet. But I still remain firm about the character of the two competitors. 2 great pros and deserve respect.

There's something Mike D. isn't telling us about his match with Ernesto. He is a great guy. You must have really got him pissed if he offered to fight!
My friend watched the match. He said that Mike D. wanted to quit the 12 ahead. Ernesto offered to play a race to 25. Mike D. said no.
I believe Ernesto was offended that Mike D. kept openly accusing him of sharking him on purpose. That among other things.
Was the game changed? No harm in telling the full story.

Would you like to elaborate WHY he pulled up? Oh and he asked you twice to go outside for a reason... Always 3 sides to a story. We will do a TAR match soon enough my friend with Justin and Nasty being head referrees. WE BET OUR OWN MONEY. 5200 to be exact. The other 800 came in from people we borrowed from because they know we are golden for it. The other 1500 came in from a buddy of mine the next day (saturday).
I would LOVE to play you if you worked for a living and bet your own. Then you'll feel REAL pressure. Granted your a great player. No need to make the action look like it was rigged or onesided... You had 3 days (16hrs to be exact) to beat a guy who plays once a month. Literally. You didnt win because it was your own fault, not because he pulled up. He gave you plenty of action. Now you wanted a clause that forced him to keep on playing (all week if necessary). We cant do that. We run a business... That is why I TOLD HIM TO PULL UP AT EVEN NONETHELESS...
He asked you politely to sit down when he was shooting. You never did. Always chatting and BSing with your friends. Thats cool though, no big deal... You were the one breaking the buttcap of your cue and whining on every shot.
In addition, you were the one who wanted to change the game in middle of set to 9ball race. He countered with 10ball race to 25. YOU DENIED...
Well, dont wanna start a flame thread, just letting you know how it went down from my point of view. See you Saturday Mike. We'll set something up for the future. pze

The money was put up Oscar. I should have played until someone had won. We also didn't finish the third day because your dad pulled out at even. The match should have been prorated, but he didn't let that happen. The only reason I wanted to change the game is because he wanted to change it to a ten ball race and I said nine ball. I DID NOT want to quit at anytime during the match. I suggested the 9 ball set so it would get over with a winner that night.

Sharking is in poor sportsmanship, I can see if that is the case, why Ernesto would be upset. Win the games on the table - not off.
Pulling money off the light is also a big no no. If you had to work, then that is something that should have been agreed upon BEFORE the match started - 6 hours a day, 3 day maximum, prorated at that time. At the VERY LEAST (and this still would not be kosher with me), something should have been said BEFORE the start of day three - not when the games were even & it seemed like a good time to quit.
Nothing wrong with being staked. Some players play better on their own money. Some play better on someone elses money. If you don't like to play a player that is staked, then don't matchup with them. If you like money, then match up with them.

Ernesto and Oscar prefer to bet their own, always have. Mike will put his money in action too if he likes the game. In this case, he and Adam had a big piece of the bet themselves. They pushed in all they had and got help with the rest.
I wasn't there when the game ended, so I can't really comment on what happened. It was a close match from what I saw, and there were big swings both ways. I can understand the part about Ernesto and Oscar having work commitments, but this is something that should be discussed and agreed upon beforehand.
I have seen long "ahead" matches end like this before, so it is not without precedent. Usually both sides agree to it though. Otherwise there will be a problem with the side who wants to keep playing. And that's what happened here.

He does play as good as any American pool player that lives in Michigan... But I like Archer, Cory or SVB's end of it for all of America. That's the beauty of Jay's game, everyone has him under rated or over rated! I've seen Jay lose several other sets than the ones you mentioned but those are scattered over a dozen years or so.... There's a reason for that. HE KNOWS exactly how he plays and he matches up about as well as anyone in the business. When you do that you tend to win way more than you lose. I'm partial in both of these matches but for that reason I like Jay and Chris because if they feel that they are matched up right they tend not to lose.........
Hey Justin...... I noticed that the flyer is lacking nicknames for Jay and Chris.... Can we hook a couple brothers up with some nicknames???? How are a couple of no nickmame guys supposed to play "Mr. 400" and "The Pain" even???? The "Dynamic Duo" has way the worst of it in the nickname department......

No odds. No line. I think its a toss up.
I will take Schmidt and Bartram for 50 each via paypal if you are interested.

im not saying i have the best of it or anything like that. i like jasons game and i like him as person.
the thing is the guy staking me has some pretty good gamble so if people want to bet with him i feel fairly sure he will bet more on side.
that way if i win ill get half.instead of the rail betting amonst themselves gary will give action which then i can make money.

Yesterday after booking all my bets online. I walk into my home room and they ask me who I got. I tell them I got about 12 bets. All on Mike D and Kirkwood. A good buddy of mine screams at me.
"Are you crazy??!!! I been on the road with John!!! John is a monster!!! He is a champion. What has this kid ever done? John will horse f**k him!!!!".
Im like "I like Kirkwoods game",
My buddy says "You like his girlfriend is what you like!"
"Yeah that too." says I. "But I seen him play a bunch of times and he never loses! Besides he's got heart. At least Ill get a good sweat out of it."
"What? Never loses on a BAR TABLE is what you saw!!!"
"All you get is a good horse f***ing is what you'll get." road player says.
Jaggoff in the corner mumbles "Maybe he'll like it. Hehehe"
Whole room goes "hehehehe"
Tell me it aint true Jason.

Thanks, I will still take Schmidt and Bartram or Schmidt and Dechaine for 50 per match, I am unsure of the Dechaine Bartram match so I will take either on that match. I will be away from the computer until tomorrow afternoon, so I only want to bet one time with someone else. Payment immediately via PaYPal.
Thanks

I have a couple of bets on John and I really like his game but if anyone thinks he is stealing they are crazy. Jason has a high gear and a good break and the $ don't faze him. Did this so called roadplayer that is so smart offer to post some money and bet since he had the nuts?

I am all about nick names. Send em in. I have never heard nicks for Chris and Jason. I am sure we could fix that though. :D
Bart likes "The Grinder", that's what he had me put on his IPT resume.... Jay, I would have to go with J-Dog or J-Rock, like Neil (IIRC) said in GR they call him Jaybird. I'd have to lean towards J-Dog (thats what I have in my phone....). I really prefer "Remember St. Louis" or "Broken Arrow" but he'd probably shoot me in the belly if you put that on the flyer, lol....

My big mouth will probably get me shot in the belly...... Hopefully he doesn't shoot as straight with a gat as he does with a cue! HE'll have to shoot pretty bad if he misses my belly.... It's a funny story how I gave him the Broken Arrow nickname, at least me and Bart thought it was funny. Jay, not so much.........

I cant put that biz in the street. Sorry, But I very rarely say who I bet on. I dont mean to be a ass but I bet thousands, sometimes 5 figures spread out. It is just bad business for me to say anything. I appericate the respect of who I bet with and its their biz too so I just have a policy-I keep it private, thanks for understanding. If I bet $50 I will say because its small and just for fun.
When I book a loser, like when I bet on Alex at the DCC I might say something, I never say anything(on the internet-i might say something on the rail) when I win.
I will say this about the upcomming TAR matches, I think that they are all gonna be close, no one is stealing. I will be suprised if there is a 25 game difference in a race to 100, I think both sets the loser will get to 87 or more.

Hang around me more often, it gets worse.
I've had guys turn down coin flips because I've won too many in a row.
I've had guys tell me in a calcutta that they weren't going to bye half themself until they saw I won it and figured they were a lock to place in the money.
I've know guys that wouldn't bet against me running up a wall backwards.

Who has fouled the most?
Anyone know any match stats like:

I took a few notes on the 80 games last night.
Break and runs
JS = 9, including the last game of the night
JK = 3
Run after dry break or scratch on break
JS = 3
JK = 11
10 ball breaks
JS = 1
JK = 2
My notes are not clear enough to answer your other two questions. :o
