Hello Arlow and welcome to the forum! You have come to right forum, many here will help you along with our great game 14.1.

I would start by saying don't worry about high runs from the get go by setting a goal number, let that come as it may, just take the game shot for shot focusing on what you are doing with the shot at hand to get to your next shot properly. High runs are made 1 ball at a time.

Best of luck and welcome to straight pool!

Welcome!

Check out the videos on this list: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=113654 and the many others posted in this Forum.

Get your hands on a copy of Phil Capelle's Play Your Best Straight Pool.

Play good players any time you can and really watch how they play the game.

Enjoy it for what it is... a pure, challenging (sometimes frustrating) and beautiful game.

My contribution to suggestions is to visit accu-stats.com and purchase some 14.1 videos. Watch them over and over. You will pick up patterns, see and be able to emulate smart play as well. The commentary is invaluable!

Don't necessarily look for high run videos where the players run out 150 points. Look for close scoring matches and get the benefit of seeing two great players in action as well as safety play.

As you become better at the game you will soon realize it is by far the greatest most intense and rewarding pool game.

The game demands complete focus, concentration, and "staying in the moment"; this behavior should be a dedicated part of your learning and practice.

You were told correctly. Straight Pool will improve every game you play, including 9 Ball, despite what some of the nay-sayers may tell you. The game provides a variety of options over and over again, long shots, short shots, kiss shots, combinations, straight ins, off-angles, the list goes on. Welcome to the game.

I think this is one of the most rewarding aspects of the game. Since starting to play 14.1 I've seen my ability to spot combos and kiss shots improve drastically. Just last night I made two different combos that I would've thought impossible a few months ago.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've been playing serious pool for about 2 and half years.

Once you get past that 2 rack barrier it feels really good, but doesn't happen that often to me. My high run is still 38, but I'm still working on breaking 50 this year.

Phil Cappelle's book is a must unless you have good 14.1 players that you can play against in your area.

High runs aren't always the most important aspect though, defensive play and knowing which shot to shoot is important also.

Glad to see another hooked on straight pool though :)
