View Full Version : Playing for 1 week.

I am going to try 14.1 for a week and see what I can run. I don't play and will start with a break ball. I don't know any rules so I will play like snooker/8ball, all fouls and call pocket.
I would like to get 5+ racks.
I will see if this game will help with other games. Many seem to say it improves skill level, time to check.

well that is a minimum 70 ball run, its quite a feat. please don't think i'm trying to knock you or anything.
i think, for me at least, straight helped me learn to problem solve with my brain and not my arm. i think you just learn to read a layout so well from putting time and effort into 14.1.
I would certainly say it gives a different perspective when looking at a 9ball rack after you've been in "straight pool stroke" for a while. its kinda like turning a chessboard sideways i guess, you just kinda think "oh, never saw that before." (Ha, i don't play chess often FWIW) plus your position routes and margin for error are ALOT bigger in 9ball than 14.1. whats perfectly acceptable in 9ball can be disaster in straight pool.
good luck and keep us posted!

No 5 racks yet. I missed the 5th ball in the 3rd rack and the break ball to start the 4th. I was leaving the break ball too low hitting the last couple balls. I found the balls break better hitting the top 2. Hoping to get some good runs in the next few days. I probably had 20 racks with groups of 8 or more sticking together around the spot. I tried to play like snooker cleaning up the balls and then going into the pack... I would break the balls out, but have very little to shoot. I started to hit the pack every chance and early, this helped. Also, I am hitting the pack harder. I started with soft breaks trying to avoid balls getting bunched on the rail. Problem was, I didn't have clean lines to pockets.
This game can get you really pissed off.

I thought this game was frustrating in practice. I played someone last night. My goal was to leave a ball close to the rack for breaking. Their goal was to get all the easy balls and leave the hardest shot till the end.

Sounds like you played Hal at World Class Billiards in Peabody MA.

I have to admit that when someone plays like this it is VERY frustrating.
And the worst is in practice when I play that way against myself! :embarrassed2:

the 14 you should have
the 14 he got...
the 28 ball swing...
you were leading 52 to 39 now the score is 52 to 53 instead of 66 to 39, just because you missed the break ball and left a wide open rack
Very frustrating indeed.

Still no 5 racks yet. I am getting to the 3rd rack often, just having problems getting past 4. I think that i could run 100 in a month or less. The racks are getting easier to clear and develope break balls. I might go and see how long it takes for 100 though. How long did it take you guys to run your first 100?

i don't know you but to come out and say you'd like to run 5+racks of 14.1 is like saying i'd like to win the lottery. just about everyone that's ever played 14.1 would like to run 70's.

I am not new to pool, I play a lot of 9 ball, just haven't played straight. Maybe 20 games or so before last week. I don't know rules etc. Playing call pocket and all ball fouls. I am setting up a break ball and having a go. I will get 5 racks. I have already run 3 full racks twice and 2 full a bunch in only 3 days.

Call pocket and all ball fouls are the rules. Starting with a breakball is a standard practice routine as well. Best of luck on your quest. Hard to answer your question on how long it took to run 100 because its relative to skill levels. Most never run 100 in their lifetime.

if you are a good shooter, and havent playd much straightpool, 2-3 racks should be makeable. but its kindof a long way from 30-40 to 70-80 if your new to the game
so i think you need more than a week.sorry.

In three days I have made 44 twice. I miss the break ball both times. I played too much spin and got stuck on the rail leaving full table length shots. I am starting to understand the pack better and seeing how to bump to develop balls. A friend of mine came over to the house and we played straight again (2 days in a row). in a race to 150, I missed in the 3rd rack twice. The 20' and 30's are coming often.
I have a rules question though. Where does the break ball go when it is left in the rack... and the same question for CB.

I posted on the 17th and didn't start until the 19th. I was working until 9 and 10 every night. I have about 2 1/2 days to go.
I am going to play for 8 hours or more today. I have a lot of expectations for 8 hours of play.

Do you have to hit the last ball first. Say I leave the 14 for my last ball. Can I hit the pack and then the 14? The guy I played said I couldn't. I had a ball finish close to the rack so I hit the rack first to develop, then the CB hit my break ball.
SWEDEintheRIVER
12-23-2008, 08:31 AM
u dont have to hit the 14 at all..if u wanna just hit the pack u can..playing safe of otherwise..its your option..but u do have to make a legal hit with any ball on the table ..meaning u have to hit a rail after contact..or it is a foul..and a 1 point deduction

That'd be 42. Any 'break ball miss' lands on a multiple of 14.

You can hit anything you want.
So you hit the rack with the cue ball and had the cue ball carom into the other ball making the break ball??!!
I've seen that a few times.

Yes that was the shot. The object ball finish close to the side pocket. I played the CB off the top of the rack and hit the last ball over the side pocket. The CB was over on the other side rail almost middle diamond.
It is really hard playing someone else that takes the total opposite ball of what I would use. I takes the fun out when you see the break ball you worked for go down early.

If 3 racks is 42 then 10 would be 140 wouldn't it? Maybe this is why people switched to 9 ball. Seems to be a ball missing every rack. I added to 5 racks and it only comes to 70.

NO, NO NO.
In straight pool you only get to shoot 14 of the balls, leaving one for a break shot. Then when you get to the end of the next rack, it is the same thing. You leave another break shot and now you have 28, shooting the break shot.
Multiples of 14 in Straight pool.

This is correct math for 14.1 (fourteen and one) , but its not why people started playing 9 ball.

Thats a shame about his old room there in New bedford, I was there many times for his tournaments in the 80's and 90's and it was a great room. Yes he was one of the best table mechanics in the land.

The difficulty I experience is connecting racks. It is simple to score 14 points. An issue is can you score 14 points and connect racks. The obstacle is to create a break ball. The main difficulties involved in selecting a break ball is how will the rack break up after the break? And will the cue ball be trapped after the break?

"I never added them, just thought each rack would be 15." "The 20' and 30's are coming often."
So you must be counting, adding balls?
"In three days I have made 44 twice. I miss the break ball both times."
"That'd be 42. Any 'break ball miss' lands on a multiple of 14."
Forgive me steev but if he started with 3 balls on the table, made 2 and ran 3 racks he could have made a 44 ball run if my math is correct?
"I thought this game was frustrating in practice. I played someone last night. My goal was to leave a ball close to the rack for breaking. Their goal was to get all the easy balls and leave the hardest shot till the end."
Sometimes we mere mortals have to play within our own game. I may have to shoot the break ball or balls to run out and stop you. Might not be the smartest thing to do but I might not have a choice. Against you I'd be giving up what, another 20 balls at least right?

I'd say you probably should read through the rules before playing.
And then if you are going to be running a lot of balls, maybe you need to brush up on one of the multiplication tables. Here, let me help:

2x14=28
3x14=42
4x14=56

being into the 3rd rack and then missing early or mid rack (30's). For the 20's, I'm out of the 1st rack and have a good part of the second gone. I am doing this often.

Not counting, If I was I wouldn't have put 44. I missed 2 break balls to start the 4th rack.

I have a 9' very tight playing table with 860. I played Turning Stone before and those tables played easier (by very little) than mine. They take a ball down the rail better. Mine plays like a snooker table down the rail, heart of pocket or nothing.
I am not running 40 every trip, I only have 2. I played 7 games with a guy, 6 went to 50 and 1 to 150. In those 50 games I had 6 runs in the 20's and in the 150 I had 2 runs into the 3rd rack. I had 5 over 15 runs. Although I didn't run as many balls in a row as practice, I had to break more racks to get those points and felt I was playing better. Also, when I ran out 27 for the win, I stopped. Maybe that would have been my new high run.

I believe most everyone starting would make the same mistake. I wasn't counting balls just stages of racks. I didn't post my score other than 44 cause I thought 3 full racks would have been 15 balls. Just shows how much I have played, very very little, and with no rules. Once someone pointed out the math involved, it made sense. I will just post racks and balls and let you guys figure it out.
I am trying this to see how great of a practice it is. Many posted this is the game to get good. I don't know yet, but will keep posting results and at the end of 1 week, post if I think it will/did improve my game. Maybe I will try to get video or some good racks.

I finished play for the 1 week (7 days). I was hoping for 5 racks, but didn't get it. I finished playing today and the best I did was a miss on the 10th ball in the 4th rack (4 balls on table). I also had a miss on the 4th ball in the 3rd rack. I finished with 3 full racks completed twice and then missed break ball. 1 time into the 4th rack. I had a few misses in the 3rd rack and lots in the 2nd rack.
I will see if 100 will come before spring. With the runs I have been getting, I think it's possible. The tables are getting easier and I am landing better on the break ball.
video will come soon.

I finished playing today and the best I did was a miss on the 10th ball in the 4th rack (4 balls on table).
So I think you are saying that your high run so far was 52, if I understand you correctly.
3 times 14 = 42 and then another 10 - 52.
Good luck on your quest for a higher run.

Let me help you with the math Denny Boy. A miss on the 10th ball leaves 6 balls on the table which means he pocketed 9 that rack, 9 + 14 +14 +14 = 51.
I've been waiting all year for you to slip up. :D
On a serious note, those are nice runs, getting into the 3rd rack often is very good.

I don't know, I had 4 balls left. I missed one on the rail trying to break 2 out and I had a break ball. I would have missed the 12th ball I guess... I need a counter for this game. Bad math on my part.
so 14+14+14+11 = 53. I am not sure if I will learn to keep score or run 7 racks first.

(x * 14) + (15 - y) = z
x = number of racks you ran
y = number of balls left on the table
z = your total run
Assuming you started with a full rack.
Edit:
If you didn't start with a full rack:
(a - 1) + ((x-1) * 14) + (15 - y) = z
where a is the number of balls on the table when you started
I think that's right.

xs and ys!?!
You are going to scare these guys away from straight pool.
Some have trouble counting let alone the advanced ciphering that you suggest.

Math makes sense. Thats why someone invented it... To help with everything that doesn't.
