I just purchased this J/B cue from Kevin a little while ago. Breaking has always been the most frustrating part of playing nine ball for me. No Longer!! I now actually look forward to it with this cue. There is something different about his J/B cues. Don't know technically what it is but this cue gets me 2 to 3 balls most of the time and the cue ball in the middle of the table with the balls spread. It has just made playing nine ball fun again. I've tried all the big names and for my money, Kevin's is the only J/B cue I will ever buy. I don't usually write these kinds of things up but I thought you guys need to know about these cues. I'm just hoping no one close to me reads this and gets one!!! Photos below:

Hi Mike. Unfortunately I have no experience with any of KV's other cues so I don't know the answer to your question. I'm sure that is a part of what's happening with this cue. All I know is this one really works and unlike the other J/B's I have, this one is a hard tip but it really holds the chalk well.

Hey, that's a communist rifle.

Indeed, indeed....straight from China I'll admit. :D But the Norinco's are the best of the production AK breed.;) It simply will not jam...you can fill it full of gravel & mud and run over it with a tank...and it'll still keep killing. Shoots pretty straight too...I can keep all the rounds in a tennis ball size group at 100yds & thats with cheap Russian ammo & iron sights.:D

My father was there. It must have been some bad sh!t because he has never talked about it to my brother or me. He just always says the same thing: "Oh, it is in my past and nothing for me to talk about."

Thanks for the service you provided then. Though I am sure there was no real thanks when you came home.

I gotta say this J/B has made me a better player. I work less to get the same results, so I'm that much more accurate and can plant the CB right in the middle. The problem is there's so much damn movement around the table it sometimes ends up getting caromed off into a rail or pocket. Not complaining though :p

I'M MORE CURIOUS ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO, TO A SHAFT, THAT IT BECOMES "PETRIFIED"........ I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO "SCARE" A SHAFT, LET ALONE "PETRIFY" IT........ VARNEY MUST BE GOOD. LOL.

Hehehe, petrified wood is stone that used to be wood. But after its petrified, its just plain stone...

By the way, Mr. Varney, I really grew to admire your work. At first, I tended to kinda overlook it, because of your mostly rather simple designs. But now I came to understand that those are real "players" cues, ment and designed to be played. The overwhelming feedback you get, confirmes that. Great work! Keep it up!
When I'm in the US the next time, I'll look for one to make some test hits.

I UNDERSTAND THE ACTUAL MEANING FOR PETRIFIED, I WAS MAKING A JOKE. BUT NOW YOU HAVE ME CONFUSED...... SO YOUR SAYING THAT SHAFT HE HAS LISTEDS AS "PETRIFIED" IS NOW STONE?

This might be strange but do you ever not want to sell a cue after you build it?

I expect them to be your "little children".

Also, you pooch may be okay, but he will never track a rabbit like a beagle...my favorite pooch. :D

I have a diamond tipped cutter in my router.:D
Seriously..."petrified" is what my supplier originally called it. She said it had been submerged so long that it was petrified or fossil wood. Hits like a fossil....very dead. Stiff & works well on j/b's but I'm not going to have it on my playing cue.;)

timeless timber is definitely not a "petrified" nor "fossil" wood nor does it play with the characteristics of those descriptions............it actually can be a more consistent and solid playing material if prepared correctly.

Adam, mine must not have been prepared properly either.i had two shafts on a Dayton.both of them wobbled pretty bad.i had been under the impression that stability and straightness was one of the benefits of the wood.

the shaft wood still has to be prepared the same way as any other good shaft would be with many cuts and stabilizing stretched over a long period of time. the result when done in this manner can yield a more consistent and better feeling shaft than standard high quality hard rock maple imo......but then again same as other shafts, that doesn't rule out an occasional dud from time i'm sure....

I just traded for this Varney J/B from Zcat27 I also got a Leon Sly cue as parts of a deal for a nice Darrin Hill Cue ... Needless to say Zcat27 did not really want to part with the cues but he explored his options and his last one sent these two cues and some cash to me for the Hill.... We are both very happy with the deal and I can't wait to try this Varney out ... I will probably be putting my Howard Mace on the market if this cue hits even close to advertised...

Mr Varney if you don't mind a couple questions ... Is this tip one you designed or is it a White Diamond ??? I currently use White Diamond tips on my Howard ... So this one has me very interested especially if it is something you built...

Also is this a laminated shaft on this jump break and did you design that also ?

I appreciate any time you take to answer these questions I know you are very busy right now. I'm really looking forward to trying this JB out as it is due in tomorrow ...

The tip is NOT a white diamond. Its one of my own design thats threaded down into the canvas ferrule. Its much, much harder than the wd and holds chalk better as well. And yes....thats one of my lam shafts too.
You pretty much got the best of everything.
You must of had some video of Zcat doing something REALLY naughty.:D

I'm glad to be getting this JB you made . I do like a White Diamond for the very reason you stated about your tips ...They hit hard and hold chalk well the fact that your tips are even better is a bigger bonus in my book for me.... I can't wait to try it out ...

J/B made from Wenge with a shaft brought up from the bottom of the great lakes....several hundred years old.:)
Is it dry yet?
Great, old growth and phenolic tip ferrule.
Make sure you wear earplugs.

If you have rejects that can be recentered and get 10-18 inches long , lemme know.

Hello Mr. Koo.....sorry for the delay in answering you as I just saw your question. Most all of that submerged wood I've had did indeed have high ring counts. Even the few pieces that did not were still very dense & weighed over 5oz. Again...I don't like these shafts on players as the hit is very hard & deadish....but they work fine on j/b. That being said....I personally still prefer the lam shafts on j/b's....they are even stiffer.:)
