View Full Version : Cue Review - Doug Patrick

I've been wanting a sneaky Pete and decided to purchase one about a month ago . . . I spied a Doug Patrick built cue here on the AZ Sale Forum and decided to buy it - I just received it last Friday. I don't post here that often, let alone write cue reviews, but after playing with this thing for two days I felt compelled to share my opinion.
This is a 19.5 oz. full splice cue made from a AAAA piece of cocobola and maple . . . 19.5 oz. with LBM ferrules, radial pin and phenolic joint. Very simple ringwork on the shafts, joint and butt with no wrap. The build quality and finish are exceptional and flawless.
I played with it a little on Friday night . . . whoa! After two hours playing with it on Saturday I decided to write something up. This is the best hitting cue I've EVER tried and/or owned - PERIOD. I've owned/played with Joss & McDermott for 25+ years, and gotten my hands on a whole bunch of the great builders cues - hit Southwest, Richard Black, Samsara, Paul Mottey, etc. This Patrick hits as well, if not better than ANY other cue I've ever tried! I mean, I've never written a cue review before, but this thing has impressed me that much!
The cue has a firm, clean hit - you know exactly where you contacted the cue ball, perfect feedback and control - overall it's incredibly accurate. The shafts exhibit almost NO deflection! I'm old school and like traditional wood shafts; I believe a good piece of shaft wood will perform comparably with most of the newest "low deflection" shafts. The Patrick built shafts do just that, but without the guesswork and "adjustments" you have to make with some of the newer shaft technology. (i.e. Z shafts, etc.)
I can't describe what else I'd want out of a cue that this thing doesn't deliver . . . the cue ball goes exactly where you aim it, english is applied with minimal to no deflection, it has crisp responsive feedback, and the balance is just incredible. I've bought and hit a LOT of cues looking for that magic feel of a great one piece cue . . . this Patrick is as good as it gets . . . I recommend you get your hands on one - hit it and you'll see what I mean.
I ordered an extra shaft for this cue, and it gave me the opportunity to talk to Mr. Patrick via phone. I have no relationship with him, and posted this to let those of you who search for a great playing cue that you need to be aware of his product. He's very professional, and told me that his sole objective is to make cues that are appreciated by players. I hope this post can bring some awareness to his superior work and service . . . Thanks for building me such a great cue Doug!

GTF Cases... a review
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well well well, what do I have here....
A brandy new GTF case for review....
Let me start off by saying, anyone who knows RSB knows that John Barton and I have had our differences. So by no means am I schilling for his case design. In fact I probably hoped I could find a lot wrong so I could tell him he can't even copy worth damn.. but that is not the case, no pun intended.
I have a smooth leather 1 x 2 GTF case. So let me begin my review...
Presentation is very nice.. the bag it came in is very nice. A product tag, a key ring with key and swatch of leather. I have to say, this part is really well done. Grade A
Latch: Now everyone knows any latch John picks out is suspect. But this is a nice brushed brass tone latch that does the job. The latch also has definition, little extra accent on the ends. The key works, one revolution clockwise to lock, counter to unlock. So far so good after 12 times. The latch on mine is attached via screws so if I needed to I could remove the latch with minimal effort. I could say that they should be riveted. But lets face reality, on all these style of cases you can pry the latch off with no problem. Grade: A, if it starts failing D.
Leatherwork: The seam is very good, the ends are very good. In fact the ends are finished nicer than the Kelli I have and the Fellini. I will use it and see how it all stays together, but right now its very, very clean. Grade A
Tube work: Cap: It looks like its a three piece cap. The extruded tube, and a top insert, and a cap. The cap is probably molded and has a rim that allows it to sit flush in the top of the tube. *guessing*This is probably a better design than a glued in cap. Plus I would think it would double as the bottom assembly. Case is longer than my Fellini.
Liner: The plush fabric is better than the thinner fabric. BUT I think its too tight. I know JB likes to turn his cases over and not have his cue hit the floor. However, I store my cues in these tube cases the following way: Shafts, tip up, butt screw down. Why? Less chalk in the tubes. It's a squeeze getting my cue in and I don't know if anything bad is happening while I do this. The butt swells the end of the case and the top needed to be finagled on. I will say I believe an older cue with a big butt is not going to fit into this case. Grade: B
What I would change. Move away from the Fellini style label. Stamp the ends, bottom of the case, get rid of the white label, the Fellini tag is iconic.
Overall this case is a low A - strong B.
All in all, the case seems to do what it is supposed to. I will use it for a few weeks then update my report. I cannot fathom any issues with such a simplistic case design. I look forward to seeing the 2 x 4 at some point.

Nice Review, Doug's cues are great. I posted a review (http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=73236) a while back and he put it up on his site. I'm going to have Doug make me a cue in the future, or maybe buy another if the right one comes along. Enjoy your new cue.

Doesn't matter if it was before during after you still posted a review in the Wanted/For Sale section, you were not selling anything and nobody was buying anything period, and just so you know Einstein you would be the pot in that scenario, so the kettle would be just as black. I am just wondering is this the same POT that made all these post in the WANTED/FOR SALE section that had nothing to do with wanting or selling anything, just a question enquiring minds want to know.

Back to the question at hand..
Nice review, I am sure Doug and fellow cue builders are glad you are taking time out of your schedule to write such a review, I for one Thank You, as reviews like this help people that have no clue who a particular cue maker is get an idea of the product they supply. Keep up the good work. Joe nothing personal, as I have never met you and I'm sure you are a nice guy and meant well, but maybe a PM would have been a better way to go then trying to make someone look bad in public that is doing the pool community in general a service, I think more people should be doing this. Did you ever think maybe just maybe he did not know of this new cue review section, I for one did not know about it. I have hit with several of Doug's cues and to say they play awesome would be an understatement, I have several cues being built by Doug and I am sure I will have several more built.

You must have some severe reading comprehension issues. Most of them absolutely belong here. Some were started so that threads like this didn't bog down the For Sale Section. That includes your favorite while we were lobbying for the other section. But I guess since you are relatively new, you wouldn't know that and again are speaking out of the wrong side of your body. If you are really going to waste your time looking for stuff like this, you really need RIP, if they don't have that in your area, maybe a secondary adult school will suffice.

Moderators: Can you move this thread to the "Cue Review" section?
The bickering has kind of taken away from the intent of the original post. There are many posts on this forum that should have been posted elsewhere, but people get excited and just start typing.
I second the original post, Doug does make a fine cue.

Thats why it was done with humor. If I wanted him to look bad I would have done exactly that. That is why the post directly under it says ROTFLMAO, do you know what that means? Do you know what this means :D ? Do you have a clue about anything? The review / discussion section is exactly for this. Its so this section doesn't get bogged down with these threads. Might not have been so bad if Banks had not cross-posted to both the Main as well as the Wanted/For Sale sections. It is easier to overlook one post, but not a cross-posting...which is a bit of a 'no-no' all on it's own.
There are several of us here that have been lobbying for a separate discussion/review section for quite some time..years even. It was all in an effort to help streamline the Wanted/For Sale section.
You know, Joe was actually pretty decent (and humorous) about pointing out to Banks about the recently added section. Getting a 'tude' about it wasn't called for.

I don't think its me that needs to get it, I am not the one with 30 post in the wanted for sale section that has nothing to do with wanting or selling, so a better question for you, WILL YOU EVER GET IT, this section is not here for your use only and you don't get to make the rules on who uses it for what. If I used it for all those post that you used it for that had nothing to do with this section, I sure the hell wouldn't be telling someone that there is a section for there post some place else. Some people just have no clue in life guess you are 1 of them, you probably also think your stuff doesn't stink and you can do whatever it is you want, my guess is you are probably one of those people that park in handicapped spaces and then complain you had to walk to far.
P.S. I see tons of other threads that have nothing to do with cue's for sale, if you are appointing yourself part of the posting police why aren't you posting in all those threads how they are in the wrong section.
Have a great day all, you also Joe as you really need it

Sean,
If I wanted to really make you look like an idiot... I can. But I am trying my best not to. All the posts of mine you tried to reference have to do with A- A for sale cue, B- posted in a thread, I didn't start (like this one) and most importantly C- at that time this was the place for said post. Am I being the post police, only when it is excruciatingly obvious that someone should be aware of the proper place. Am I allowed, absolutely. If you look at all the threads, usually someone will make a comment on the place of the post if it is improper.
But your first reference.. because of the clutter in THIS forum, was exactly the place to post the poll.
The second post is about SELLING. Which is more than relevant in this section...
I mean you are going on such a stretch, it's not even debatable. Like I told you, you haven't been here that long and you are historically inept, so I am really trying to not be crude.
If the original post was "by the rules" we wouldn't be having this conversation. So don't try to lecture me about "rules" when you have no idea what transpired before you came aboard.

I guess being from Alabamer' I should cut you a little slack, but since you needed to end your sentence with that little message, you can do the same. But keep in mind it's proper use of the forum that makes it enjoyable for everyone, not just YOU.

Good to ner you be cuttin us po Bamer folk sum slak.
And to get the thread back on, I think Patrick makes some nice looking cues. I've never hit one and if I didnt have one getting built right now, I probably would have bought the cue he had for sale on the WTS forum.

Sean,
If I wanted to really make you look like an idiot...
So don't try to lecture me about "rules" when you have no idea what transpired before you came aboard.

sorry wrong answer all those are started by you in the wanted for sale section, enough said on this subject back to the subject at hand Doug's cue's.

You still don't get it. They were posted in the area that was commonly used to discuss cues, transactions, etc.. now it's being thinned out. This post should be in the review section, whether you like it or not.

SEAN,
YOU NEED TO CHILL OUT.....
JOE MADE A JOKING POST WHILE STATING THIS SHOULD BE IN THE CUE REVIEW SECTION.
THAT'S WHERE IT BELONGS
ALL OF JOE'S POSTS IN THE WANTED/FOR SALE ABOUT THINGS OTHER THAN SALE/TRADES, WERE BEFORE THE CUE TALK SECTION WAS STARTED.

Gotcha dude . . . BTW . . . don't let me ever catch you talking 'bout something you bought in the "Wanted/For Sale" section on this forum . . . and bothered to say how it was after you bought it . . . 'cause that might be . . . .pssssst . . . REALLY inappropriate . . . and a serious violation of the rules . . .
You just go have a great day . . . and I'll try not to bother you anymore. FO
YOU ALSO NEED TO RELAX....
JOE WAS MAKING A JOKE, AND TELLING YOU ABOUT THE NEW CUE REVIEWS SECTION OF THE FORUM, WHICH BY THE WAY,
IS WHERE THIS BELONGS
JOE'S NON SALE THREADS IN THIS SECTION WERE BEFORE THE REVIEWS/DISCUSSION SECTION WAS STARTED.
P.S. TELLING A RESPECTED FORUM MEMBER TO FO, IS NOT THE BEST WAY TO START OUT HERE.
