Ok some might think this is a repeat of my thread for J&D Customs (Jim Lee) but I'm going to post everything I've thought about before I picked him, whats going on when we were designing the cue, and what goes on during updates to me etc. Here goes and I'll edit in this post as time goes along. Take in mind I've never had a custom built for me, much less design my own and have someone build it for me (all handmade, no CNC). I was leary at first because I dont know all the terminology of the parts of a cue, etc. and he never made me feel dumb and he even drew a cue up and pointed to what was what to help me out. He made me go from being too nervous to build one (I almost pulled the trigger on a Judd JT-1, but I wasnt sure of what I wanted) to feeling confident this will be one badass cue.
1/16/2008 at 12:07 AM: I reply to a post that J&D Customs posted about selling one of his Kingwood Cues. He didnt post any specs or a price so I replied to his thread saying I was in the looking for a custom cue and that he should post his prices and specs, etc. He replies in a pm very shortly thereafter and asks what I'm looking for. I dont know everything I need but I know I want something with a 3/8x10 pin (I've shot with a few and loved the stiffness) but other than that I really didnt know what I wanted. I told him I was waiting on a price from two other cuemakers before I decided who I would go with. He said that was cool and to let him know if I needed any help from him no matter if I bought from him or not. After getting emails from the other two cuemakers I decided they were out of my pricerange for what I wanted so I pm'd Jim back and said lets talk. We talked basics and he even drew up some ideas, and I told him I'd let him know when I found something I really wanted and we'd start the build.
1/17/2008 11:28 PM: I found a cue on the internet that I based my design on and drew it up with the colors I wanted in the cue and sent it to Jim. He said he could do it and actually wanted to build it because he thought it looked very traditional but had colors in it that are not seen in an everday cue on here. After I got the word that he could build what I wanted in the colors I wanted I told him I was going with him and that I would be sending my $200 deposit that night to get started. He said there are about 5 cues ahead of me (including the ones for TATE to review on the site) and it could be anywhere from 3-5 months depending on the repair work that comes in, etc. and I said I'm more than happy about that. I give him my phone number and he calls me right away and we talk for about 3 hours (take in mind its about midnight when he first called, I asked him to) and we talk about 10 minutes about the cue and another 2 hours and 50 minutes about life and family. I thought that was pretty cool. I felt like I knew him my whole life right after that. We finalized the plans and sent the payment while we talked. Game is on now.
1/18/2008 Around Midnightish: Me and Jim trade a few pm's just shooting the bull. He says he gets in the veneers and has 3 different shades of the color I asked for. He laid them out by my forearm and sent me pics asking which exact color I wanted so there was no confusion or if they were all wrong. I picked the one I wanted (which was dead on) and he then puts it against the color of the point to show me what it would look like. I approve so we now know the colors for the veneers, rings, etc. So now I ALREADY have pics of my beautiful forearm laid down behind some colors for the veneers and points.
2/3/2008 11:00 PM: We trade many pm's from the 18th to now just shooting the bull as usual. After asking him to post pics of the test cue for TATE he tells me my cue might be done ahead of time. Of course I'm giddy but I know its still awhile away. Things are still good and Jim says everything should turn out ok.
2/9/2008 1:00 AM: We trade pm's again shooting the bull and Jim imformed me that he already has everything in house and ready to go and I'm about 5th in line (of course not counting any repair work, etc. that comes in). All the veneers are glued, and the shafts are turning. Things are starting to look up!
-----------
More to come as things come along. Hopefully this will help someone that was nervous like me in contacting a cuemaker and wanting their own cue instead of just what the cuemaker puts out and thats all you get. You get a TRUE custom that way.

Yes, Jim is a great guy to deal with. I have a pink ivory and bacote 6 pointer headed my way in the next week or so. Finishing touches are being done as I type this. I had posted this weekend that I was looking for a $600 cue, and Jim reminded me that he could build a cue by my design. Jim actually had me thinking about something I never thought about before - DESIGN a cue in the style I WANT!!! So I had to think about it for all of 10 minutes and came up with a design and look that I will be happy to have in my collection. Let's call it the Mardi Gras/New Orleans wrapless full-splice cue. I will start a thread and post pics when it gets going, but I am excited, and can't wait to get it started. Like a kid in a candy store.
With all of the cuemakers and cues available here on AZB, sometimes you lose out on ideas that could benefit you. Jim was a great big help, and I am looking forward to seeing my cues from him.
But keep this on the down low about his great service and abilities, otherwise his wait time will grow, and I want to get a few more from him in the near future, and I like the future that only lasts 6 months. SHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

He actually seems like he genuinely (sp?) cares about what you want when wanting a cue from him. He just doesnt push what he has or what he can build to sell you. He doesnt say its this cue or no cue at all. He seems like he wants a challenge and is willing to take on anything IMO. I'll wait for the final product to come in and let you guys see it before I post a price. I searched all his threads before committing to him and looked at his cues he built, and all looked very clean and I even pm'd most of the people that bought cues from him and they all said his cues were jam up and they were buying more from him (that was enough for me).
Here is one pic that I've gotten so far. Its the forearm (birdseye) and the 3 different colors he got for me to choose from. I picked the one on the far right (my favorite b'ball team North Carolina has this color) which is my favorite color. Will be alot of ebony and this blue.

Well , I don't want to Hijack your thread :D , but wanted to show a picture of one of the cues that Jim/J&D custom is making for me. It is getting a wrap this week, and should hopefully be in my hands very soon. It is a beautiful 6 point bacote in pink ivory forearm, with a bacote butt sleeve.
I also have another cue in the works from Jim. Great guy to work with, and you will love your cue when it is done. I will start a post with my new pink ivory cue when it arrives. Just wanted to show the almost finished work of Jim, so that you can get even more excited about yours. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,

I have an update from this weekend and added it to my post. I have even tweaked a few changes, and asked Jim about a few ideas I had on 'personalizing' my cue. He even gave me a few ideas that I liked well and will probably go with. Has still been a PLEASURE to work with so far like everyone else has said. Even after making a few changes the past two weekends he hasnt griped one bit:D

Here was a rough sketch I drew up for Jim. Take in mind I dont know alot of termonology of cues and of course he even helped me with that. There have been a few changes since this drawing but it will give you a general idea of what I'm getting. I'd love to hear everyones thoughts!
I forgot to write down that the forearm will be birdseye maple.

I'd like to offer my suggestions. 4 veneers, no ring above the wrap, a long white buttcap and only 2 instead of 4 dots along the vertical in the buttsleeve. Don't ask me why because I don't know. Just a matter of taste I guess.

I'm not a huge fan of alot of veneers. I like the ring above the wrap, and I cant stand a white buttcap. I settled on a dot on each point of the diamond on the buttsleeve and stayed with one on top and bottom of the diamond on the points. Like you said, its all in a matter of taste. Thanks for the suggestions though!
I think I seen an Ed Prewitt like you just mentioned (or close anyways) and it looked very good. For some reason I just dont like the buttcaps being white.

Your welcome. Most everyone's tastes in cues change as will yours. You'll be back in the market sooner or later :). My first custom is a Scruggs and I thought I'd never want another cue. I have shot with about a dozen other cues and at present settled with another Scruggs. I think I'll be sticking with this one and have never felt as secure with a cue. But whatever you do don't sell your very first custom made cue. Mine feels very distinct and I get a pleasure from taking her out from time to time.

You guys have been great to work with and design with. I like the fact that I did not design these cues, you guys did.
I am working on finishing the cues I have for customers , and then concentrating on your cues. I am making the ringwork now, and getting ready to shoot some pics for you both. I too can't wait to see em put together and come to life.
Once again, Thanx to you both for all your words of kindness and support.

And on Jim, he is a great guy to talk to, is particular to detail, and can design what you want. Never thought about designing my own cue, until he brought it up to me. Now I can't wait to see it in my hands. Quality work by a quality guy, for less than you might think. He isn't cheap, but you won't know until you ask him if it is in your range. I agree his prices are very hard to beat. I went back and looked at his threads on here to look at his cues just to make sure he built what he said he did. He was well under 150 bucks or more than the other cuemakers I looked at for the same cue and they wouldnt give me the colors I wanted like Jim did. He went out and got the colors I wanted even though he didnt have them. He has bent over backwards for me and has NEVER jacked up the price one bit.

Smart call going with the curly over the birdseye. Don't get me wrong, I love birdseye maple, it's one of the most attractive woods out there, but it has the potential of snapping in half. I know you don't plan on going around dropping your cue but accidents happen, someone walking by accidentally knocks it over etc... I've seen cues with birdseye forearms snap right in half over nothing major. They call it a "birdseye break"
From the photos you've shown so far I have to say "WOW" I really like the classic look you chose. I can't wait to see the finished product.

I was very lucky to get a cue from Jim today to try and sell for him here in the Deep South. I could be wrong, but I think the dark wood is some kind of Wenge (sp?) and the points are American Oak. The pics of this cue does it no justice. He also sent it as I'm trying to figure out whether or not to get a leather wrap as I've never shot with a cue that had one. I have to admit I liked the grip on the lizard wrap on this cue.
On the hit, this cue hits VERY stiff which I like. My cue should be done Wednesday according to Jim so I'll have mine in a week or so. I hope it shoots like this one. Doesnt take much english to throw the cueball around the table, but after a rack or two I couldnt miss. So I put the stick up knowing what to tell potential customers on how a Jim Lee stick shoots like. Lookings at the pics he posted on here when he tried to sell it, it took awhile for it to grow on me. Once I seen it in person it looked 10 times better. There is no doubt in my mind that I made the right decision going with Jim Lee. I have shot with a Rick Howard, a Jerry Olivier with one of his shafts and a 314, and an Andy Gilbert and I like the hit on this cue much better than the 3 I mentioned. I dont act like a cue expert because I'm far from it, but I fell in love with this hit today.
Remember this cue is still for sale for $350 with NO scratches, dings, or dents. You can contact me or Jim if you are interested. On a scale of 1-10 in terms of hit, looks, and craftsmanship I would rate this cue easily a 10 (my only issue was the tip was not shaped round enough for me, but thats no big deal and this is not MY cue). Enjoy the pics!

BTW-The Wenge cue still hits excellent. Jim had a delay due to some family obligations (which I told him no big deal, family before my cue I say) mine has been pushed back a few days but my nephews is ready for clear (he's the impatient one....hahaha).
We had problems trying to find diamonds to match my ring and veneer colors, so my diamonds will be just a tad darker. Doesnt bother me, as I like that color as well and it makes the diamond stand out that much more IMO. I told Jim it was ok and it was full steam ahead. Here is an update pic with one diamond inlayed. I decided to go with a lizard wrap (thanks again to Jim for sending me a cue with one on it so I could test it as I've never hit with a leather wrap before) and think it will look much better than the black w/white linen wrap. Tell me what you guys think!

Oohhh!! You're putting inlays in that beautiful piece of wood? Please don't over do it. That cue looks so awesome just the way it is.
What inlays are you having done?
MULLY
I almost thought not to inlay anything as the butt look awesome with just the ebony and the rings. But with a black wrap I thought it would look too plain and I'm a sucker for the diamonds so I just had to:D

Well, Jim's work is really showing up around here, and it is very good. Looks good, and plays great!!! I didn't expect that Wenge cue to be here as long as it was, especially at the price of $350. Your cue is looking really nice, and I can't wait to get my Mardi Gras cue, and then it will be the wait on the GOTULANE cue. Glad to see people actually taking notice of Jim's craftsmanship.

Just heard from Jim and looks like Monday it could be shipped out. I'm having him make some custom joint protectors to match the cue (will be Ebony with matching ringwork). So I hope to have the updated pics by then and posted up on here. Then hope to do a review on it (if it shoots like the Wenge cue it will be the same review...lol). Cant wait!

Well both sticks are here and in my hands as I type (not literally). Will test them both out tomorrow! I skipped some pics of the butt because it has my last name on it and I didnt feel like editing pics tonight. The sneaky is for my 7 year old nephew (he will be 7 Saturday) and this is his b'day present. It says "The Patrick Cue" on the butt and Jim signed underneath. The curly truly looks amazing and both shafts feel good just moving them through my hands. No sanding required, they are game ready right now. Got matching JP's that are in the pictures as well. I tried to get as good pics as I could and hope you guys enjoy them as much as I do.

Congrats on the cue , hope it's all you want it to be. :)
Umm. . . I guess I'm going to be the first a$$ to ask this but . . . did you slot the diamonds with a sharpie ?
Sorry if I missed something. :o
I'm almost ashamed to ask that , sorry. Just looks funny in the pics.

After seeing how beautiful the ebony and curly is, I probably shouldnt have gotten anything inlayed into it. Jim pulled two great pieces of ebony and curly IMHO. But I'm still very happy, my first custom and built how I wanted. This wont be the last cue I build through Jim either.
My nephew will REALLY be happy come Saturday. I'm trying mine out tomorrow, along with the Laser Rack:embarrassed2:

Sorry I missed your post but just now seen it. You would have to ask Jim that question, as I didnt build this cue-just designed it. Me and Jim have talked and he didnt like the way the inlays came out so we are good on that no problem. It still doesnt stop the way this cue shoots. It took me a day or two to get used to it, but after that I've shot REALLY well with his cue. I WILL buy another cue from Jim Lee, thats a given. My next one will look like Danktree's cue except I'll have different rings and possibly a different handle. It will look alot like the one Wolfgang Souqet cue that was on the boards not too long ago...

Jim says there is no way the notches are from a Sharpie. They are notched into the inlay (I guess thats how its done).

Cool , no biggie.
It's just usually not done after the install of the inlay and I guess it's not common for the notches and dots to be so irregular. Could be the lighting I guess.

Yes they were alittle off in about two places. Jim has offered me a settlement on my next cue (hey I still love the hit to it) that I agree too and will use when I order another one soon. My next one wont have inlays not because of Jim, but because I've never had a cue without inlays.

After 2 weeks with the cue I still love the hit to it. This baby shoots lights out to me and thats the most important thing to me. Looks I can adjust to but not a bad hit. The H2 tip was the first time I've ever tried one of their tips and they make a good one IMO so far. It hits very well and I like the stiff hit of the Ivorine ferrules (even though I'm still getting used to the grain in it). This has been a perfect comb for me and I've shot real well on the 8 footers with it. I might try it out on some barboxes tonight and hopefully a 9 footer soon.
All in all with the inlays there were only a few minor issues with the inlays and miscommunication between us as well. But if I'm not mistaken this was the first cue he inlayed in a long time as well so I'm sure he was rusty. But I'm not griping as I love the cue and I love the hit to it. 10 out of 10 for me on the hit.
