Stong start buddy! Sounds like you're hitting them good.

Thanks.

I was hitting them pretty good - but since that 147 (about a week and a half ago) I haven't been able to get over 60. The weather has been crazy down here for the past couple of weeks - cold - then warm - then humid then cold - the cloth gets sticky and the balls don't want to cooperate. That's Florida.

(come on - I'm a pool player - I gotta blame it on something other than my bad attitude and inability to deal with those conditions)

:p

Best of luck. Its an honor every year to have you shoot down my best high runs in mid-February... lol

Are you going to play on the Florida Tour this year? f so, let me know - I think I still owe you lunch/dinner for giving me a ride home, hope to see you out there and hittin' 'em good this year!

I've been reading these forums since I've got my new table at home three months ago and I think now I'm ready to start playing again straight pool after around 15 years.

But before starting to practice to put my number in the 2008 list I'd like to know the rules of counting. I mean I count the best run during a normal practice session of straight pool playing or do I start with a break ball?

Thank you,

Marco, the one that will be last in the list for some time.

My first couple of tries this year has resulted in a whopping 43 so far.

Well, maybe 42. You have to love a pool hall that won't fix a broken pocket in less than a years time. I made the 4th break shot, but the pocket is broke and sitting 1/2" to 3/4" low so my break ball shot back onto the table and actually hit the stack. I just quit after that.

Call it 42 and the world's crappiest pool hall.

EC,
You are obviously approaching this with the correct attitude.

It is very likely that you will be able to increase your high run by 50% or perhaps even 80%......let's see John Schmidt and Thorsten Hohmann do THAT (I don't think it likely).

My first day of straight pool in 2008, and my high was not more than 26. But I also made 22, 18 and 16, so I won my match pretty comfortable.

For the very first time of my life I actually enjoyed playing straight pool, so maybe my high run of 49 is about to die soon...

TheUnitaryValue,
Put me down for a paltry 41......but hell, I've got a whole year ahead of me.....maybe you should just put me down for a 527, I'm positive I can get there with just a little practice......on second thought just stick with the 41.

two 29's to start the year for me on my 9ft diamond. (today)

hadn't played straight in some time, so decided to play some 14-1. Still no BIG run and havent run my age on a 9fter yet. (30 ) There must be a 3pack coming soon, i just feel it. i'd LOVE to stroke a 50this year, but it will be a difficult target.

i got one run on video.

The second "lucky" one, i had a difficult breakball. Made it , free'd 1 ball, but i had a second breakshot to go back into the pack, made it and got stuck in the pack. (no neat in, neat out for me).
I tried a full table lenght bank to continu the 3the rack, but missed it by not much.

Sorry guys, life been bit hectic, will edit this and the 2007 thread ASAP, please post your 2008 runs here. (Hopefully we can get it changed to sticky again also)...
Thanks for the work.

I had a 75 last night in league. It was one of those runs that should have been much shorter. I had two side-pocket breaks with ball in hand behind the line. On one of them, I hit the break ball too thin and missed the rack but nicked the corner after coming off the foot rail. One break ball was near a bottom corner of the rack -- maybe a ball and a half from the rack towards the corner pocket, and too low and too much cut for a normal break, so I caromed off the corner ball to make it. Twice I had bizarre kiss-combinations out of clusters. One break ball was a diamond above the side pocket with about a 10-degree cut, and I drew back to the rack.

The spot in the game was 140-50.

Our league has a high-run award, but it is prorated according to your rating. My "goal" is 98 or so, so this was 77% of my goal. Another player has a 37, but that is 90% of his goal, so he is leading the competition.

I'm a 9 ball player but play straight every once in a while when my basement is dry. A couple weeks ago I ran 53 on my 8footer. I've only broke and ran 2 back to back in 9 ball and have broke and ran 4 straight in 8 ball on a bar table. Hope to add to this post later. Looking forward to seeing peoples high runs.

Krisz
02-21-2008, 12:50 AM
i had my first real run for this year: 37

i'm still a bit frustrated, cuz i missed an almost straight-in 1.5-footer.
but thats me - as soon as i start playing good, i have trouble keeping the thoughts out of my head:(
after the first two racks, there seemed to be a 40 on every ball on the table - damn, i hate this game!

but wait a minute...i love it;)

i'll have a couple of chances to get past sixty this year, and i guess i'll make it at least once. i just need to get used to playing good again...

I don't know why Steve Lipsky hasn't posted this yet. He ran a 135 on Monday which means he now has two 100+ runs in 4 league matches. Everybody hates him now.

Seriously, I hope you guys appreciate him as much as his local room does. His willingness to convey what he knows to aspiring players is truly seen in person. Seeing one of his students run 100 would probably be even more exciting to him than breaking his own high run. Having him in the room is like perpetually having the big kid on your team at the sandlot.

Agreed. Steve is one of the most knowledgable people playing 14.1 today. I am surprised my 163 has lasted as long as it has - usually by this time in February I've blasted 140+ balls only to get chopped down by Harriman, Schmidt, or Hohmann. This year, I seriously believe that Steve will sit atop the board if he keeps playing as well as he has lately.

I'm pulling for Steve to finally hit the 200 mark. When I hit 200+ back in 1994 (204) I was ecstatic. I was on cloud nine for about 2 weeks. Steve has all the skills necessary, but for the past few years he hasn't had the time. Hopefully this is one of those periods in his life where it all comes together for him.

Just like you, I'm a big fan of guys that share their knowledge with others - I consider you, Stu, Tony, and Steve to be the goldmine of pocket billiards knowledge in NYC. I learned a long time ago that you have to give it away to keep it. I learn more from teaching others than from practicing diligently until I frustrate myself. Keep up the good work.

Thanks guys... Jude, on Monday I actually ran two 100s, a 109 and a 135. However, the reason I didn't post it is because - and this is nothing short of bizarre - in both runs I crapped in a ball (missed, but it went in the called pocket)! LMAO. In the 109, it happened at 83, and in the 135, it happened at like 7 or something.

Still, I've run over a hundred about 6 times this year so far, so I feel I'm playing really well... I'm enjoying the game again and generally can't wait to hit the tables.

David, I'd like nothing more than to make you proud and hit that 200! You and your posts are an inspiration to all of us looking to improve our games, I hope you know that.

Jude, thanks, that was really nice. One thing I've been doing lately with a lot of the guys in the room is playing scotch doubles 14.1 with them (not against anyone, we just try to run balls together). It allows them to see my thought processes, and we talk things out as to why I may do one thing or another. Sometimes they have ideas that I hadn't considered, so it's helpful from both sides. Anyway, whenever you want to try it, let's do it...

JR,
Yes, and playing against him is like playing against that big bully on the other team at the sandlot.:) :) :)

I will echo your sentiment that AZB is fortunate to have him as a contributor.
After our match at the Maryland tournament, he was gracious enough to communicate some critique and tips to me....VERY HELPFUL and perceptive.

In the future, I am definitely planning a pool trip to NYC; it would be awesome to hang out for a few days with sjm, JR, and SL. Hopefully you guys will make a visit to Betmore's Basement if you ever venture west of the Hudson.

P.S. - I've tried that Scotch doubles 14.1 (alternating shots, not innings) with Mark Wilson; it is a GREAT way to learn some straight pool, and I believe it makes it more entertaining for the instructor as well.

Wow Blackjack, that's really nice of you to say! Thank you!

I was Steve's opponent when he ran 101 with a house cue and it's moments like that that really make me wish I never played 9-ball. The league we play in has no less than 6 players that have high-runs over 100. It's very humbling. What's more, all of these 14.1 players quickly turn around and play 9-ball like it's a joke.

..I'll play along.

I had a high run of 10 Friday. I was actually playing pretty well for playing my first straight pool in years (and I've played less than ten times total). I was making shots and controling the cueball well.

My shortcoming was breaking balls out successfully. The balls seemed to want to go right back into the stack. I had many 6 and 7 ball runs then had to play safe because of unsuccessful breakout shots.

Won the game 100-89 though.

I appreciate this thread as it will make me focus on moving up the ladder!

What are the odds? I don't play a lot of straight pool but tend to shoot every once in a while. Someone told me to play more straight pool and I will become a much better 9 ball player. Last year my high run was 36 balls. A few weeks ago I made a new high run of 53 balls. Today, again, I ran exactly 53 balls. The last rack was like quick sand and I couldn't get out of trouble. Anyone else experience something like this? I guess I just can't run in the 40's ha ha.

I've just finished practicing with my new cue (5K1 + 314-2) and I did my first 20 run!

It was a pity to scratch after potting the key ball; I was already ready (maybe that was the problem) to start my first third rack! (Did 7 in the first and 13 in the second).

we just recovered some gc4s a week ago here in pensacola.i have not played 14.1 since the derby because the cloth was bad.anyway im setting up a camera from the 7th through the 10 to see if i can run over 300 on film.with only 3 days i dont think i can do it but ill try.what i plan on doing is when and if i get fortunate enough to run 300 or more on film,i then am going to do a voice over with my very close friend bill marop.he is very smart about 14.1 and will be good to have in the voice over .its hard to talk to yourself for 2-3 hours and make any sense.bill and i are going to play for 3 days and see what we can capture on film.by the way he has run in the 90s a bunch of times including a 97.i call him mr97 but i think hes going to break that when he comes out in march.anyway im going to try to get a nice run on film, then at the end do about a thirty minute break shot, patterns, key balls etc dicussion.i learned a few things from the last dvd i made and hopefully can improve on this one .i hope to help keep one of the best poolgames alive and will let you guys know when the dvd is done

we just recovered some gc4s a week ago here in pensacola.i have not played 14.1 since the derby because the cloth was bad.anyway im setting up a camera from the 7th through the 10 to see if i can run over 300 on film.with only 3 days i dont think i can do it but ill try.what i plan on doing is when and if i get fortunate enough to run 300 or more on film,i then am going to do a voice over with my very close friend bill marop.he is very smart about 14.1 and will be good to have in the voice over .its hard to talk to yourself for 2-3 hours and make any sense.bill and i are going to play for 3 days and see what we can capture on film.by the way he has run in the 90s a bunch of times including a 97.i call him mr97 but i think hes going to break that when he comes out in march.anyway im going to try to get a nice run on film, then at the end do about a thirty minute break shot, patterns, key balls etc dicussion.i learned a few things from the last dvd i made and hopefully can improve on this one .i hope to help keep one of the best poolgames alive and will let you guys know when the dvd is done

John, I bought your 245 run DVD and really enjoyed watching it. I'm glad you enjoy straight pool enough to do these productions. I'm a fan.

Just to put my two cents in as a straight pool viewer, the player review style of commentating is great but for me takes second place to the player talking about his thought process while he's actually shooting. The fact that you've run 403 balls in the past is all the credentials you need to sell a DVD instructional to me. You don't have to do it again. I don't care if someone with your proven ability misses on occasion. I just want to know, in every detail, how you think while you're playing. It may sound tedious, but could be a real gem if you ever decide to do it.

What I would love to see, whether on this upcoming production or a future one, is for you to actually play in less than ideal conditions, where balls aren't opening up well, not for the purpose of a high run, only for instruction.

When you're faced with 5 open shots, tell us why you're choosing the one that you do and why you're playing that particular shape for the subsequent shots or groups of shots. What are you ignoring for now, what are you keeping in the back of your mind, etc.

My favorite straight pool instructional so far is Jim Rempe's because he really allows us to get into his head while he's shooting. I also have a Mike Sigel tape(out of print maybe) where he runs 100 balls telling us what he's thinking while shooting. Online there's a Ray Martin 90 some ball run where he does the same. Even though it's poorly recorded, there's a lot to learn. He also receives questions from the crowd while shooting which is helpful. Having good straight pool players in the audience allowed to ask you questions during your play would be great.

I think it's easy to forget the minute details of what you were thinking when doing a player review after the fact.

Maybe it can actually be great if enough time is put into post analysis before recording the audio, like taking notes after watching each rack and fully remembering your thoughts and decisions. Then after having that solid refresher, you record your thoughts over that rack's section of tape. Stopping and studying each successive rack like that, and then recording.

Whatever you decide to do, I look forward to supporting it. Straight pool is the only game that holds my interest, and I love that you're helping to keep it alive.

Peace!
Jeff

I witnessed first hand at the Dutch Bootcamp (training with Alex Lely and Johan Ruijsink) how the real pros play straight. Nick vdBerg was playing against Stephan Cohen (not a slouch himself with PB somewhere just shy of 300) on the last day and missed an annoying cut to the middle pocket. Result was 285 (his own Dutch record stands at 293). Had he not missed it, there were only 'easyish' balls on table so 300+ was very much on the charts....too bad....

Personally stand at meager 21 :(

Next time Nick!!

Cheers,
Kimmo

Considering this came after 4 days of hard exercises and not at peak-performance time....respect!

john schmidt, all the best with your DVD initiative. Great you are considering to add instructional part to your run. I share the thoughts expressed by bluepepper, and would like to hear preferably not post-game comment but in-game one. Let it be a "short" run of a 100, may be more if you could do that. I have your 245 run disc, and that's very nice tape, but that is past. The only goal there could be the longest run recorded IMO.
Once you would like Bill Marop be involved, I suggest you could do the following which is completely new approach. While you do your in-game comments being on the mic, Bill sits besides and does his own commentary of what you are doing and the way he sees it.
Could you also try to make an instuctional DVD - may be in a way of straight pool clinics you ran at DCC, or based on the questions/most common problems your students faced there.

one of the posters mentioned that i should do a run where i explain my thoughts through the run and give you every option and detail and then you would understand why and how i shot every shot.bill and i talked about it and i think im going to do just that.we start filming on the 7th and will be done on the 10th.i think this will be m uch more useful to people to improve their game instead of me just putting out a tape where you watch me run 200-300 and fall asleep .last dvd i had to talk as fast as i shot because it was a voice over.this time i can explain many things much better.the first hundred i will talk through then i might keep going and see how many we get on film maybe over 300 if i get a little lucky.

If it goes okay after, say, a 100, you could concentrate on your game more and just continue the run - and occasionally explain some points you feel important (like early cluster management, or vital key ball or position). Happy shootin!

Today I played a lot of straightpool. I got a new high-run of the year, but still nothing impressive... Today's runs, over 20: 36, 29, 28, 28, 26, 24, 22, 22, 21.

I have actually started to enjoy playing 14-1 more and more. Hopefully I will beat my high run of 49 soon...

Still not a bad day he only beat me by 26 and I usually lose by at least 50.
This makes my high run for the year 14 :D .

Excellent, John! Truly something I look forward to buying. And I don't think I'm alone. You can make a really unique contribution to the library of straight pool instruction with this. And a person only has to watch one Accustats straight pool match with commentary from other world-class players to realize that there is no one way to run the balls. Half the time the commentators are confounded by the choices the person at the table makes when running the balls. It's one of the reasons it's such an interesting game.

The fact that you have had such great runs means that you think in a special way and probably in a way that's unique to you. Crane, Rempe, Sigel, Martin, Mizerak, Mosconi, Reyes, Schmidt and every other great player all see things differently.

In my opinion, the more you talk before shooting the better the DVD will be. And another thing. You've established yourself as a master of straight pool with, among other high runs, that run of 403. Anyone with anything bad to say about the way you choose to run your balls is not being open-minded to the complexity and individuality of the game. So go into this confident that what you have to teach is as valid as any other teaching from masters past or present.
Have fun with it. It's going to be great.

At least I had my best competition match so far on saturday:
trailing 30-50 after 8 innings, I ran 27, 39(ouch!) and then the remaining 4.
Later in the evening I had another 37 in a practice match.

I think I was there for Line's high run! (Unless she's beaten it since.)

She ran a 116 at Amsterdam East, while practicing for the last US Open in 2000 I think. She claimed it was exactly double her previous best of 58, which was quite a feat.

I saw the last 70 balls or so and she ran them beautifully.

It's still 116, made in New York...

She was playing me today when she ran 82. The first 40 balls I was sitting there hoping for a chance back at the table, but on the next 42 I was just hoping she would finally break her record.

The last couple of days I have been taping all my sessions at the pooltable, but since we only had time for about 1 hour of pool today I didn't put the camera on, even though it would only take me a minute.... Sorry for this guys... Would have been nice to have the 82 run on tape, it was absolutely beautiful, except the position for the 83rd ball where she almost scratched, and ended up with a funny angle.

Who is a good straight pool coach?Blackjack, Steve Lipsky, John Schmidt just to name some forum members. And we are lucky all of them consider making some instructonal material (books or videos) so that you wouldn't need to meet them personally (though it is always the best method of being taught pool). They are in different stages of their projects (I believe Blackjack is the one closest to the finish line) but once they are available we are all happy! :)

...but missed position on the break ball.

I was playing well and starting to think a little more strategically thanks to a pm from a certain "author" on here:D Thanks, coach!

Still losing focus too much though. Having all those balls to shoot at makes me rush through the early stages of a rack when I should be playing strategically from the beginning.

One great side benefit is that my 8-ball game is being helped dramatically by practicing straight pool. It's gotten me to SLOW DOWN and play much smoother and with more control.

Hmmm, I'll start eating more spinach to see If I can speed up that time table.

Now for some real news, John Schmidt finished filming the new straight ball instruction DVD yesterday at 9 Mile Billiards here in Pensacola.
I was happy to help with its production by locating an extension cord and then staying out of the way during filming. :D We all do what we can.

John did get a new high run for 2008 of 175 on Saturday and If memory serves the run during production on yesterday was 164.

The film crew supervisor said it would probably be around three weeks before the DVD were ready, though I don't actually know when they will be available for sale.

It is a work in progress, but the filming done, so now we can hurry up and wait.

Good job John!

He is still in Rochester for another week. Don't know if he has internet access here. Years ago, he would run 200+ on me on a regular basis.

Lyn

Glad to hear you're playing well, Lyn. Will you be in Vegas?

Cool list with some truly intimidating scores on it.

I managed a 39 back in Feb. My goal is to get over 50 before summer, just need more time to practice.

Hi Steve,

I leave for Vegas tomorrow for two weeks plus. If you're referring to May, yes I'll be there for both the BCAPL and the ACS. Haven't seen you on the Joss lately. I'm trying to get to Comet Billiards for the event next month. Good luck to you and Gina. Hope to see you soon.

I played Pat Howey once in 9 ball and then talked to him after the match. I asked him his high run ever and he said 326 I think. It was definately over 320. Being a new guy to straight pool with a goal of 100 I asked him how many times he ran over 100. His reply was "ha ha" and then he walked away.

I ran a 24 last month. For me that's really great - my previous high was 17, so its a bit of an improvement. Not only that, but it was off my opponent's break, which I must say put a bit of a damper on his game with the spot I was getting.

BobJ- I'm the one in league that's just beating your run of 75 - my high run goal based on my rating at the time was 30 balls, so that puts me at 80%.

My personal goal this year is to run my age (31).

Yesterday, I ran 20 which is a new high for me. Although it was only 4 balls higher it felt great to at least get into the 20s. I got out of shape on my break ball on my 2nd full rack and left my self with a shot similar to one BlackJack posted awhile back:

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=70745

I knew what i needed to do with it but ended up rattling the 5.

I haven't broke 40 this year, but I got my first individual Finnish Champ medal in 14.1 two weeks ago, so I'm a happy camper although I didn't play well at all. In the semifinal my opponent EC-medalist Aki Heiskanen ran 118 and 32-out so I couldn't bee too unhappy to lose that :)

What is discouraging though is that a former Finnish snooker top pro Robin Hull, who reached top 32 in world ranks and was forced to retire this year from his snooker career due to health problems picked up a house cue the other day and ran 180-something in straight pool with hardly any pool experience. Disturbing...

These guys are running centuries left and right and I'm still looking for my 1st... grrr :)

Just venting, carry on boys :)

Hi,

I'm happy for my new achievement of 25 but I'm really frustrated because my lack of skill in maintaing focus during a run.

My 26th ball was the key ball (the cue ball positioning for the break ball was easy and good) and was a pretty easy shot.. I missed it by something less than an inch (tight pockets) and with it the opportunity to start another rack and probably to go over 30..

That's why straight pool is a very good practising tool to learn to focus on each ball separately. The runs usually end in a missed easy ball after losing focus rather than a difficult ball. Straight pool is a good example of a game that is "a good player is a not a player making all the difficult shots, instead a good player doesn't miss the easy ones" in a nutshell. I'd say many beginners with a good stroke cannot still make runs over 50 just because they don't have the ability to focus for a longer period of time. You have to learn that separately. Good luck in finding your focus.

Great point, Mikko. During a long run, I find myself tanking out mentally somewhere between 84 and 100... for John Schmidt and Danny Harriman, I have seen both of them still going strong at nearly 200 - Danny is a long distance runner - and I believe that helps immensely with his mental endurance.

Thorsten is another example of a player that has great focus and concentration. It is not so much that he can turn that into big runs in 14.1 - what is amazing is that Thorsten is able to apply that focus - and when necessary (after sitting for a long run) he is able to REAPPLY that focus.

A great example is in this match Toastie had with Allen Hopkins at last year's World Championships - both of these guys came out of the chair - cold - after sitting through some pretty good runs - but they just turned it on again.

Allen Hopkins -VS- Thorsten Hohmann 2007 WC (http://propoolvideo.com/predator-world-14.1-championship/world-14.1---t.-hohmann-v.-a.-hopkins.html)

It's a great match to watch both players applying their focus and concentration as they both edge towards the finish line.

Gave you rep for the 26 - keep working hard and you'll get there eventually!

Thanks for the wishes and the rep (didn't know what it was until right now).

I've read an interesting article I tend to agree with about multitasking and focusing in modern days:

It seems we are becoming able to focus on many different things at the same time but at the same moment starting to lose the skill to remain focused on one thing for longer periods of time.

Something like our brain developing a new skill and losing one.. and I think that is not so good..

I've been working for 10+ years in the ICT area and I have surely developed the skill to work in multitask but at the same time I remember clearly how I could focus for longer period of time while doing just one thing (age is a key variables too but I'm still 33).. and I can live something like that in pool too..

I surely could have write this much better in Italian ;-)

Just finished playing straight pool and ran 56. It's my new high run after running 53 twice earlier this year. I bobbled an easy nearly straight in 57 trying to get into the stack. I tried cheating the pocket and forcing the cue ball up into the pack and the pocket spit it out. Already breaking my high run 2 times this year is going to make me want to shoot more.

By the way... I set the shot up again after, and got to 71 and scratched on the break ball. Not like it would have counted anyway, but I wanted to try to get to 100 with only 1 miss. Maybe some day.

Don't worry, Pat - when you get back here you'll have to deal with the wet rails and sticky cloth - back to skids cussing yourself - and being happy about running 60's and 70's lol

Hi Folks,

At the urging of another regular member, I'll add my score. Two weeks ago Friday, I ran 189. It became my high run by roughly two racks. I hesitated to post this because I had no opponent and no one was watching. Mike Sigel was in Rochester practicing. All I can think of was being inspired by one of the greatest 14.1 players of all time. I was in "the zone" throughout. Missed the simplest shot looking for cue ball position before finishing my stroke. Happens way too much!!!!

I ran a 30 tonight.

Before I left my house today, I told myself I would run 30 balls in straight pool. I ran exactly 30. I'd like to think I would have gone higher if I'd told myself to run 50+, but 30 is a new personal best, and I'm elated over that. So, I guess I shouldn't get greedy :)

Hello:

I equalized my personal high run tonight. 42! :) At least I ran more than my age this year. It is really amazing how one can screw up the pattern with the last two balls before the break ball.

I've been sitting with 29 for about 30 years now. That was done on my 8 ft Brunswick VIP playing one of my sons. 21 is my best on a 9 ft. I haven't given up hope though.

Hi there,

I had a nice little run of 50 today...stopped by a rather unlucky roll.
Anyway, it was my highest run in 12 years and a nice game as well, so I'm not disappointed.

I had a run of 48 on a table with 4.25" pockets yesterday. It's not my high run for the year, but considering how tough the table was and how humid the conditions were, I'm quite proud of it.

Hey Guys! I just started practising for the world champs which start in a few weeks. Had a good day at the club today, just beat my high run record of 114 with a run of 176, should have been more but as usual something stupid happened going into a little cluster and ended up on nothing. Still pretty chuffed with the run though. Bit bummed I didn't get over 200 for the first time.. but hey, saving that for the world champs! ;-) Not bad for a novice!

Broke my personal best today practicing. Ran 43 balls :clapping: . Now I know 50 balls is within my reach this year, and hope to work my way to 100 someday.

Ran 15 three times yesterday. I really wanted to make the 15th ball so I wasn't able to break up the rack well which ended my runs twice. On the third run after making the break ball I shot into the rack and slopped a ball in and decided to keep going. Ran another 10 before I missed, so officially my high is 15 but I'm pretty happy to have run 25 before not pocketing a ball.

A guy I sometimes shoot 9-ball with wanted to try straight pool the other night so I suggested a short game. I gave him 20 balls going to 50. I broke, he ran 2, the planets aligned and I hit him with 37 right out of the gate, he made 3 more, I played safe, he made 3 more and I ran the rest of what I needed. That's the quickest I've gone from zero to 50 ever. 3 innings not counting the break, 2 if you don't count the safety play.

I haven't been playing much pool lately, but I did get out last night for a practice session. I had planned on running through stroke and shotmaking drills, but I wasn't excited about it at all.

Instead, I decided to just play 14.1 to see how many innings it would take me to get to 100. Somewhere in the middle of the my "game" I realized I hadn't missed in a while (for me) and that I was probably on my new high run. Ended up missing the very next ball on a 10 degree cut into the side pocket...

So, my new high run is 21. I had two successful break shots and had opened the third rack up well with a secondary break and then I dogged it.

As Captain O'well would say...oh well.

Ran 41 the other night in league play.

Ended when I dogged the key ball to a perfect break ball. Things were flowing so well up to that point that I just let my concentration lapse for a moment. That's what makes this game so hard -- even on those rare occasions when it's feeling easy.

I ran a 113 in a league match about a month ago. Lost the game though! The league at Amsterdam Billiards is really brutal for me. I was going to 200 and my opponent was going to 70. He ran 35 his first inning and after my run it was 138-45 and he ran out. Sigh.

Long run in 2008 is 57. I achieved the run at the start of a match. After the opening break there were a series of safes and intentional fouls. I got a small opening and ran the 57. I've been breaking off some moderate runs with greater frequency recently. Just this week I had practice runs of 56 and 54. As a side note - I recently bought 2 shafts - the OB-1 and the Predator 314 which have a 12.75mm width. I had been playing with shafts that were near 13.25mm. The difference is huge. I can do so much more with the cue ball. I'm disappointed I didn't discover this much earlier in life - but I have been primarily a recreational 'home' type of player. I'm throwing myself much more into the tournament scene and hope to continue learning!

I had my best run of the year last night with a 28. I jawed my break shot, but was happy with my play. I picked up a new OB-1 shaft and it seemed to pick up my play. No idea why, but shots were falling that i typically miss and position play was exponentially better. I can't wait to get home and play some more.

doesn't count for this list since Danny doesn't post here...but he ran 245 yesterday (Danny Barouty that is). Still quite an accomplishment, he missed a relatively easy 8 in the side after several tough racks, missing his personal best by only 43 balls! It also represents the highest run at the New ABC location (Chris Lynch mentioned that no one has run over 200 yet).

It is just fascinating to watch this sort of thing unfold, even through several tough racks he didn't make a single shot that wasn't clean into the pocket (at least for the 140 or so of it I personally witnessed).

I brought my videocamera to do the Cuetable-contest (16), and started to practise some 14-1.

Forgot about the time, and made a 35 and a 41, and suddenly I had ran out of tape (only 1 60 min tape), so will have to go back later to do the Cuetable... :)

Will post the runs later today.

EDIT: Just realised I had a 42 this year... Thought 41 was my highest this year... oh well... atleast 41 is the highest on tape this year, since I beat the 40 I made a couple of months ago :)

Ran a 56 unfinished last night with a house cue.

I played pool after work with some friends and ended the night by showing some trick shots, after which I was asked how many balls I could run, which led me to give it a shot. First try I ran 9 or 10. Second try ran 56, it was 1:30 am and we were kicked out as the place was closing so I wasn't able to keep going.

Not my highest run but another one I'm proud of, mainly because it was with a house cue.

I had a very good league match on Monday where I ran a 47 in my second inning and followed it with a 60 on my next offensive opportunity. I finished the game with a run in the 20s. It's definitely the shortest 150 point game I've ever had.

Hmm, maybe I should start playing straight pool, haven't entered the list so far. Still got a few weeks to go...

What happens if you play straight pool on New Year's Eve and run 50 before midnight and continue running another 50 after midnight ? Which list do you enter or do you get an entry of 50 on both lists 2008 and 2009 ? :)

The best I've put down this year is 46 on Nov. 27th on my Kim Steel.

I organized & played in a 14.1 league this year, so I hoped to get in a good mindset and take a run at my all-time high. About 10 years ago I nearly cracked 80 on an AMF version of a Gold Crown with 4-3/8" pockets...it took two solid 1/4" shims to get it that tight so it played double-tough!

Well, the table is very tight and unforgiving, Craig was playing with a house cue and neither of us has really practised lately and I had a terrible hangover and... I don't want to go into details but neither of us ran more than 20 :) I know, excuses, excuses... :embarrassed2:

But I had a great time, Craig is a funny guy and good company and has a solid game. Thanks Craig for your visit and have fun in India. Stay away from the bad guys with devices that say boom ! :)

Time for an '09 list!

List updated but could be a few mistakes. I've added one video link but if there are any others please let me know?

Given my lack of time on the forum this year and playing pool in general it might be time to hand over the reigns to a more active poster.

I think its been going for 3 years now and although it hasn't been easy to keep this list updated while travelling all over the shop it's been fun none the less. The main aim was to further the interest in the great game of straight pool and encourage people to try and break their own pbs.

All the best for 2009
