OK, I was waiting for someone to start it, but here it is:

Who do you think win win the WPC in Manila, and who do you want to win?

a) I think, given the excellent year he's had so far, Efren (2nd seed)will win it all in November. Of course, Souquet's had a great year, too, but since the Filipinos have homecourt advantage, then my choice has to be Efren. That said,

b) I want Bustamante (10th seed)to win -- he's due. He's been playing great but somehow losses it in the end where it matters most. Hopefully, things will turn out differently for him this time around. If not Django, then Kuo (6th seed). He was totally robbed of it last year. Not to belittle Wu (top seed), but Kuo was undefeated all throughout last year's tournament only to suffer at the hands of the Wunderkind. It's his turn. So ok, that's two choices for who I want to win. Sue me... =)

Honestly, I think a rematch of last years final would be great. Keep in mind many consider last years final one of the greatest tournament finals of all time given the format and prize money at stake. MY pick to win this year however is Ralph Souquet, given his performances throughout the year and the fact that he's won this before he isn't a bad pick.


Obviously you can't count out Efren especially in his homeland, Manalo and Orcullo are two other Filipinos I would expect to go deep in this one. Bustamante hasn't won the "big one" in quite some time but you can't count out his massive break, especially on this equipment.

yeah, i agree. he's been due for a long time already. it must be frustrating for him to see his ward do so well so soon. but then again, it must also give him some sort of vicarious pride, i guess....

yang is on the hill vs. hundal but hundal is on the table and it looks like he
can run out....
he does and it's now 7-6 still in favor of yang
 
yang breaks....2 balls find pockets, he has a nice shot on the 1 and no other problem balls....but he overshoots the 3 and gets in bad shape for the 4! he's snookered himself behind the 9ball....hundal is licking his lips.....yang kicks at the 4....and leaves an easy 4 for hundal! it looks like an easy run-out for hundal....aaaannd....he misses the 6 terribly on a straight in shot!!! yang makes short work of the remaining balls and he's through to the next round! 8-6

but my initial assessment was wrong...seems edey isn't through yet as he's tied with hundal.
 
Did Orcullo just lose to Nguyen? Last time I checked he was down 7-5, and they don't have an updated score.

If Dennis did lose, he's not even guaranteed to advance even if he wins his next match against Steve Davis. If he only won 5 racks against Nguyen and Nguyen wins his next match, it might come down to how many racks Davis wins against Orcullo that decides who goes through.

Thanks for the update.

Since Orcullo won 7 games and Nguyen won only 6 games in his match with Davis, Dennis is guaranteed to go through the next round provided he wins his next match against Davis.

Davis advancing is another story if he loses and Nguyen wins. I think Davis needs to win at least 6 racks.
 
what happens now to orcullo? does he have to hope that nguyen loses his next match? or is he ok since he won 7 games against nguyen?

pagulayan's trailing li right now 6-1, with li breaking in the next rack....but li comes up dry giving pagulayan a chance at the table....although i'm not so sure about his chances given the alternate break format....he might be eliminated, after all.....
pagulayan flubs his chance at the table and li cleans out for 7-1.

pagulayan to break...got one ball in...tried a 1-6 combination shot to the corner pocket but he misses, leaving the 6 near the jaw and the 1 about two ball-lengths away...li tries to carom off the one and cannot get the 6 to fall....pagulayan comes up with a good bank on the one..... and runs out. score is still a long uphill climb for pagulayan at 7-1.

Are you sure it's not 7-2?

Pagulayan NEEDS at least 2 wins in this game, considering Li He-wen blew out Lee Kun-fan 8-1 in his previous match. If Alex manages 2 wins against Li, then he's secured a spot given that he beats Lee Kun-fan in his next match.

Is this Li He-wen that good? Colin?
 
meanwhile, bustamante leads appleton 4-0...make that 4-1 after appleton runs out....

bustamante breaks...sinks three balls...has a clear shot on the 3, squeezes the 4 into the corner past the 8, then makes a long cut on the 5, and easily pockets the remaining balls, score now 5-1.

oops again...you're right, it should be 7-2. must be getting sleepy....

if i'm not mistaken, Li is a two-time runner-up in the san miguel asian 9-ball tour.
 
score is now 6-1, after several brilliant shots by bustamante that's too hard to describe....

bustamante breaks, makes the 7 ball, then exchanges safeties with appleton....bustamante leaves the 1 slightly open and appleton makes a great carom to the 2 in the side pocket....shooting well now...but then he misses the 6 in what should have been a straight-forward shot! bustamante wastes no time in clearing the table and gets on the hill, 7-1.
 
appleton breaks...has to bring out his jump cue for the two...bustamante shots a safety...appleton fouls...with ball in hand and a simple layout bustamante proceeds to run out...but he gets bad shape on the 8 and misses the bank....it's a long shot for appleton, though, with the cue on the rail and he misses...bustamante runs out for the win, 8-1. he's definitely through to the next round (i think).
 
back to li vs. pagulayan, li is on the hill, 7-2....li goes safe, hiding the 1 behind the 2....pagulayan jumps...and almost makes it....leaves a cut shot for li which he makes...and continues to run out for the win, 8-2, and a place in the next round.

pagulayan now needs to defeat lee tomorrow to be able to continue on to the next round with li.
