The pieces I'd be interested are at least 3/4" x 3/4" x 5". I can see they're long enough, I can't tell on the width or thickness.
If these fit the bill, what price would you be needing to get?
I can't speak for Mr. Baxter, but I use a few different finishes on mine depending on what the person wants.
High gloss - I use CA.
Satin - I use boiled linseed oil/CA. This method requires no sanding for me.
Natural - I either use a friction polish, OB Shine Juice - recipe compliments to...
Thank you. Now that it's warming up, I'll be back in the shop too. I haven't forgotten what you sent me a few years ago. I'll have something for you. You'll get it when you least expect it :)
I've had no luck with accelerator. That always seems to make the finish cloudy. I would stay away from it. I usually wait a minute or so go by between coats and very lightly sand as slow as the lathe goes.
If you're only doing the top part of the cue shaft, I don't think it'll be a big deal...
When I put a CA finish on pens and other turnings I make, this is what I do.
I start out with thin CA and make 6-7 coats. I take 400 grit and gently sand. Then I repeat the process using medium CA. After the last coat of medium CA, I wet sand from 400-12,000 grit. Once that's done, I take...
Use for burls
I'd have a use for burl sticks that size. I would use some like that for game calls and would cut them down a bit smaller and use for pen blanks. What you have would make some nice pens and calls.
I do have several pieces that meet the swirl and grain, but not those colors. I'll give your idea a try to see if I can bring out those colors. Thanks for the tip. If this doesn't work, I'll take Joe's advice and just pass.
I've told him this and shown him several examples. I have cocobolo pens I've made and photographed. Over time, you can see just what you're describing happen. I do not know how to make the colors remain :) Despite this, he insists on having just what he wants even if it is just for now.
He has a $75 budget for the entire project, so I don't think much.
He's very picky. I have about 50 cocobolo blanks and none were "sufficient." I told him I'd give this site and another a try. If I don't find anything "sufficient" I won't be able to do this for him. It's becoming more...
