Dr. Dave just retired from his "day job"

Congrats on the retirement! This is year 30 for me in public school (high school). I will continue to read your pool teaching posts and look forward to hearing of your travels. Maybe I will see you at Mosconi 2021!

Do I have a Right to be Upset - Blood Stains on Cloth?

I have to agree with a couple of other folks who mentioned that his opponents did not notice either. If you were upset at the gentleman for not noticing he was bleeding, you should be equally upset at those playing him who did not notice. It sounds like you have handled the situation with your...

    WOW!! Seriously!

I agree that seeing something amazing, like running an 8 pack, is something to behold. And since winner break to 8 was the format, player A won, hands down. And should be applauded. My preference is to at least give the other opponent a chance to show his greatness as well. Winner break is...

    WOW!! Seriously!

A better analogy, in my opinion, would be archery. If a guy hits 3 in a row through the same hole, does he win? He probably should, but the next guy at least has a chance to show he is just as good. If he puts 3 in a row through the same hole, then it gets exciting!

    What's your greatest pool accomplishment?

I joined an APA league at age 45 and was promptly assessed as a skill level 3. I worked at the game and made it to skill level 5 by age 50 and played in my first singles Regional in 9ball. I was of course nervous and lost my first match. I buckled down and won through the losers side and...

    Issue during APA Playoffs

I think last session some people would have liked for me to have had a substitute breaker. I had shoulder surgery and anything harder than pocket speed was not gonna happen. So I had some rather clumped up tables when I broke. The folks I played with were super nice and totally understood my...

    bridge use question

    (c) Mechanical Bridges – The player may use up to two mechanical bridges to support the cue stick during the shot. The configuration of the bridges is up to the player. This part of the rule says the configuration is up to the player, so I would have to interpret that as a legal configuration...

I'm quitting APA😞..Lost the local APA Championship last night

I am not sure if it is sangbagging, but I play guys during regular session that miss 3 or 4 times a rack, win some lose some, but then in a tournament that counts, they run 5 or 6 balls consistently and get out. I know some just play for fun during session, but then buckle down during playoffs...

    how to play in tournaments

Thank you, PhilosopherKing. I do not have the experience that many of the guys on here have, and taking the time to give expectations of a tournament to a guy new to tournament playing is very helpful. I read each one and hope to use your advice the next tournament I get to play. I read all...

To spin or not to spin?

I have no experience to suggest to good players, but I coach the 3s and 4s on our team, and tell them center ball because, for the most part, they do not hit center even when they are trying. Adding left or right on purpose really makes them inaccurate with the shot. For good players, I would...

    Mosconi team without Shane

I like the idea of playing co-captain simply because he earns that respect by the way he wins all year long. His record at Mosconi says it would be better to replace him with maybe Johnny Archer for the experience. I think rodney also shows a record of missing some shots and key times, and I...

Help returning to the game after shoulder surgery

High Miles, Thanks for the insight. I expected to be sore for a few weeks, but I am on week 7, and most people say it takes 6 months. I will stick to practicing a stroke and only hitting soft and center. It is very frustrating to think about playing with only 20% of the needed tools.

Help returning to the game after shoulder surgery

PT 3 times a week, but they are not pool players. Lot's of good stuff to do to help with range of motion and strength building after 6 weeks of nothing. I am sure the next two weeks will yield a lot of improvement, I was just hoping for some help from anyone who has done this and used the slow...

Help returning to the game after shoulder surgery

I had rotator cuff repair, and have just been taken out of the sling (six weeks of complete non-use). The Dr. says I can start to swing my cue again. So my question is: should I start warming up, even with limited range of motion? Or will I develop bad habits from compensating for the lack...

    APA Vegas

I will be there Sunday 14th for 8ball. I would like to put some faces to names as well, and events away from the pool hall don't scare me!

    Consistency of APA Ratings

Innings can be very misleading in that, a 3 may work very hard to make 3 balls in a row, and against another 3, a four or five inning game is the way they play. However, if the table is slightly cluttered, and a 6 does not break anything out, and waits for the opponent to move balls until the...

    Earl and Hatch's exhibition

Does anyone know how to contact them for an engagement. I would love to try to get them down to Texas. I met Dennis last year at a tournament. He was incredibly friendly and had a way of making you feel good about your game even while kicking my butt three ways to Sunday.

Life....The Thing That Happens Between Tournaments

Great description. I teach high school for a living, and the pool world is a pleasant break from my "reality".

Seriously considering moving to Waco, TX

I am in the Houston area. You gave me advice when I was looking at getting a used table. I avoided a really bad table thanks to you. I think Texas is the right place and when you get here, I want to be first in line to have you come get my table tuned in to perfection.

    Need Help With Tournament

Detroit Larry, Thanks for the site. I just set up an account and ran a fictitious tournament to see how easy it is to use. It was very simple, but did not draw brackets that I could tell. I have found people like to see the lay of the land. Is there any way to draw out the bracket, both...
