Video Encyclopedia of Pool Shots ... Rocks!

I am still a developing player but I am learning a ton from the Video Encyclopedia of Pool Shots. Some of you old timers might know all this stuff, but these videos have accelerated my learning curve a great deal.

"Knowing" is not the same as "executing," and there is no substitute for practicing and drilling, but "knowing" is the first step. And, when things go wrong, I also understand much better why they went wrong. I could spend a year just working on the stuff shown in Volume II.

I highly recommend these videos and I cannot wait until Volumes III, IV and V are released.

Congratulations and thanks to Dr. Dave Alciatore and Tom Ross for putting this material together.

Thanks Shaft. I appreciate the positive feedback, and I am glad you are finding VEPS useful. FYI, Disc III is due to ship out next Tuesday (2/23).

Regards,
Dave

It sounds pretty cool, I hope you sell a ton dave. Is there a tiny sample of any of the videos available? Is it similar to the stuff on your usual site?

I've already posted lots of samples from the first three discs. I'll post samples for Discs IV and V as soon as they are done. Here are the samples available now:

Enjoy,
Dave

I have also found some of the information that Dave and Tom put together of great value.. Without knowledge, it's pretty tough. Looking forward to DVD's 3-5..

It's "TA-DA" not "DUN DA"! :p

I love that sound!

Dave

For those of you not getting the reference, each volume of the encyclopedia contains many shots Dave and Tom call "GEMS."

Every GEM shot is announced with a "Ta-Dahhh" fanfare, with diamonds on the four corners of the screen.

I really like the center table routes and the pocket hanger routes.

Thanks! It feels good to know people appreciate our work.

... me too!!! Actually Disc III is already finished and will ship out next Tuesday, but Disc IV is kicking my butt. It takes lots of diagramming and narration to illustrate and explain kick and bank stuff along with all of the "non-ideal" issues and "real-world" fixes that many books and videos sometimes neglect to mention, especially with the diamond system stuff.

Regards,
Dave

Some people have actually complained about the "Ta-Dah" sound effect, especially on YouTube where the GEM sound occurs with almost every demo clip (because they are all "gems"). However, I still like the sound and think it is an important alert to let people know the next thing they are about to watch is important. Ta-Dah!!!

I really like the center table routes
NV B.74 - Center-of-table position and routes, with the 45-degree rule, from VEPS II

Me too. That's an example of something I learned from Tom, and I've used it several times in league play over the last few months.

and the pocket hanger routes.
These benchmarks (from Disc I) can be sensitive to table conditions, the depth of the ball in the pocket, CB speed, and the exact ball-hit-fraction, but I think they are still useful references.

Dave

VEPS is similar to some stuff I've done in the past, but I think VEPS is much better. For one, I worked with Tom, who is a very experienced coach, long-time instructional columnist, and great player with lots of tournament experience. (He also drops his elbow quite a bit, and sometimes before CB contact. :grin-square:) I think we made a great team for the project. Also, I've put a lot more time and effort into "production" (overlay graphics, illustrations, better lighting and camera angles, more thought-out narrations, etc.).

Please let me know what you think once you've viewed the DVDs (if you do).

Regards,
Dave

Dr. Dave,

As you well know, I've been extremely impressed with the series. But apart from the information itself, I just wanted to mention that many times I find myself scratching my head as to how you've managed to put this together without any outside assistance? The setting, lighting, camera angles, graphics, editing and narration are worthy of a studio production, imo.

Those who associate you with "dimly lit" and somewhat fuzzy high-speed videos, incomprehensible equations and charts, though all excellent material for those with that bent, might say to themselves (as I actually did!): "I thought I knew Dr. Dave, but had no clue." Your ability to assemble a vast amount of material, present it in a clear and logical way, and always with great care and precision, frankly, dazzles me at times. Of course, the online samples provide a hint of what's in store, but being just samples, they can't really do the experience of viewing the entire video(s) justice.

And to think this isn't your day job!

Jim

All newer players need to get these DVD's and some others (I won't derail the thread) and they need to take some lessons to they'll have the technique to consistently shoot the shots.

As a new player I ordered the VEPS and IPPB package the other night, my only hope being that I will stop getting my azz kick by my wife LOL. Of course, I will have to keep the videos a secret

At any rate, I have always enjoyed Dr Dave's site and the practical explantions, thanks!

Thanks Jim. That's very kind. Although, I think you are exaggerating a little. Regardless, I appreciate your sentiment. We worked hard to do what we could with our non-studio setting and limited equipment, so I'm really happy that people think the final product is of high quality.

... sounds like a good recipe for a porno flick.

, incomprehensible equations and charts
I try to keep this stuff as hidden as possible to protect the innocent. :sorry:

, though all excellent material for those with that bent
Jim, you might be one of the handful of people in the world who actually appreciate the technical TP stuff on my website. I'm glad somebody relates to it besides me and Bob (and maybe PJ and MP).

Thanks again Jim. You are too kind.

I actually look forward to retiring from my "day job" some day so I can dedicate even more time and energy to our wonderful sport. I also look forward to having more time to actually play more pool.

Dave

Thanks, and good point about lessons. Knowledge alone is not enough, and a good instructor is much better than any book or video at helping an individual improve their game.

Thanks. You are lucky to have a wife that enjoys pool. You are truly blessed.

I hope you (and your wife) enjoy and benefit from my stuff.

Dave
