Snooker World No. 1 John Higgins in betting scandal

Yeah but to be fair there's not telling what Earl was thinking. It could easily have been, "Pfft, there's no way any of these lambs can beat me, there ain't no way Ima takin' a dive and letting them screw me out of muh $50,000! No deal!"

I don't think so - I think Earl was mortified.

Just to put it on the record because his name was mentioned, Ortmann wasn't there - so he was not one of them. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have bought into it either.

... I want to say one thing for all to hear. Earl Strickland was entered in this event, and he refused to be part of any shenanigans. He was the only one who refused to participate. The other seven were not so innocent.

Jay -- The year LeBron won the Tournament of Champions was 1991. Earl Strickland was not one of the eight players in that event.

I can send you a list of the 8 players by PM if you need to be refreshed about this.

I know your memory is quite amazing about distant pool events. But is it possible that what you remember about Earl opting out of the skulduggery applied to some other event?

You can see some of this tournament here:

News is breaking across the pond that Snooker's World No. 1 John Higgins has been caught planning to throw frames of snooker for 300,000 Euros...

Headline news over here, absolutely amazed as John Higgins is supposedly one of the more upstanding players.

Does the amount of money involved make it worse ? Isn't this betrayal , and a character issue ? How about a player dumping to another player where calcutta money is involved ?

Earl was originally on the list of invitees but declined to join in the fix and withdrew from the tournament. He was replaced by Tony Ellin. The source of this information was Earl himself who told me the story some years ago

I'm quite certain Ortman was there as I distinctly remember watching that event on TV. I could easily be wrong though.

You may be correct. I'd like to see the list of names of the eight players if you have it. I'm sure about seven of them. It is the last name I'm uncertain about. I just found the entire list of eight players. Hopkins was the player who refused the deal in the first year. But the other seven went ahead anyway. Earl blew the whistle on a deal in year two and put the kabash on the whole thing. When the promoter of the event found out, he went through the roof, kind of like Barry Hearn did this time. He told them if there was any dealmaking NO ONE would get paid! They had to sign an agreement not to make any deals.

I was there when he had the meeting with all eight players in year two. I was asked to leave the room, when it came time to sign the agreements.

Jay, while I wouldn't ever say you're afraid to speak your mind, you're usually pretty circumspect in some things. It seems like an unusually bold statement to name 7 major, well-liked pros and say in no uncertain terms that they rigged a major tournament. I feel like I should have heard of something so serious. Maybe this is one of those old news topics that was already hashed to death on this forum or RSB.

How sure are you?

I have been hearing this troy for over 20 years and I believe Jay should know. I have heard different versions, but that is the way stories like this go.

It is my belief that Jay has spoken about as much on this toped as he should or would want. I respect that!

Why? If it happened let's get the real story out and into the light of day.

Now I really question your statements. Oliver did not play the first year. That I can tell you for sure.

This is also incorrect info. No player withdrew the first year.

i didn't think he was there either, but that was my memory of the thing.

There was at one time a tape of the final match and it was jus terrible, I mean awful. Lebron was crapping all over himself and couln't make a ball in the ocean! His opponet was just absolutely sick at his stomach!

I can tell you from watching the link I posted above, where you can watch some matches, Mike L. beats Jim Rempe and David Howard beats Varner. Others mentioned were Sigel and Hall. Hopkins was announcing.

Reread my post #129. I now know all eight players from year one. Earl was not one of them. It was in the second year that he took his stand against any dealmaking. Yes, the final match in 1991 got very ugly.

Hopkins and Kim D. were the other two players. So now you all know. It's 19 years later. The statute of limitations has run out on this one a long time ago. I think I did discuss it in my book. So it's not newsworthy anymore.

What purpose would it serve? Sensationalism??Why are we so attracted to things like this in pool? Pool has enough problems with out all the nagativity.

No, I opt to leave it in the past. Besides, it happened to a casino...IMO Perfect victim!!

well Jamie Cope and Neil Robertson should be sending a few gifts John's way......

Jamie moves from 17th to 16th in the rankings (automatic entry to all tourneys for the top 16) and Neil grabs the top spot to go with his new world title

ALL BY DEFAULT, lol

thanks John........
