Billiard University (BU) playing-ability-exam scores and ratings

Your math is absolutely correct. I think I must have pulled some old factors from a printout I made from the BU website. I had 4 3/4" as 1.0, 3/4" as 1.10 and the 1 1/2 as .95. The TDF thread set me straight.
 
Every time I look at the results chart my performance is getting lower and lower and my table easier and easier. I'm a B- player now.

Oddly ever since I spent the week messing around with these drills and tests I've been playing like crap. I used to regularly beat the nine ball ghost now I'm lucky to average four balls. I think failing on these "tests" has robbed me of my confidence.

That can easily happen. But....if you stick with it, you may just find that your game will actually come up to a higher level than it was before. The "game" is funny that way. Sometimes you have to take a step backwards to go two steps forward.

That's too bad the 8-ball and 9-ball didn't work out better. I hate it when that happens. :angry:

I look forward to seeing how high you or others can push the Masters-level score on a table smaller than 9'. When I can find some time, I plan to try to increase my score quite a bit (on my "loose" 8' table). I also plan to try to reach the Doctorate level on a 9' Gold Crown within the next year (... that's my goal anyway).

I did the 10-ball Ghost last night and scored 44, 56, and 49.
I also did the fundamental exam again and scored a 71! Huge improvement for me. The BU videos helped (as did a new set of contacts) and a lot of practice. Here's the link:

I plan on applying for a Masters with Honors diploma (I want a higher video score on the Masters exam first), but my goal is to score in Doctorate range on my 7 footer by Christmas.

After quite a bit of practice this week on all the exam 1 components - I took the test again tonite, sunday 7/6 - exam 1 score 56.

My 10 ball ghost scores are not showing much improvement yet - I will do some solid exam 2 practice next week & maybe that'll help the ghost scores a little. (as well as improve my first attempt exam 2 score hopefully)

That's good improvement, especially over your very first attempt (34?). Nice job! I hope all of the practice is paying off with better game play also.

When you or others post new exam scores, please post your current best score in each exam, along with the total so I can add the entry to the list.

By looking back at past posts and your PMs to me, the best I can figure is:
Exam I: 56 + Exam II: 21 = BU Score: 77

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I look forward to seeing how much you can improve the Exam II score. That is a better test of actual game-playing ability.

FYI to those who might have your own electronic or printed versions of the BU exam documents, we have made a small change to the instructions for Exam II drill S3 (9-ball patterns). The 2nd bullet used to read:

You receive 1 point for each ball pocketed legally (w/o scratching) in rotation (i.e., in numerical order).

It now reads:

You receive 1 point for each ball pocketed legally (w/o scratching) under 9-ball “rotation” rules, always hitting the lowest-numbered ball first. If the 9-ball is pocketed early (e.g., with a combo or carom shot), you must still pocket the remaining balls in rotation.

I played three more sets of ten ball ghost, pattern racking to get the 1,2,3 and usually the 4 up table and averaged 57. I guess I'm getting better at fooling myself about my skill level :)

Thanks for the update. With that high of a 10-ball ghost score (even with "intelligent racking"), your BU score should be much higher. If and when you find some time, please practice and try the BU exams again. I am (and I'm sure others are) curious to see how much you can improve.

FYI, we had our first annual BU Summer School Boot Camp in Fort Collins this past weekend. BU professors Bob Jewett, Randy Russell, and I were the instructors. We had 8 students, 2 of which are AZB members (radicalone and EagleEye). EagleEye reached the "Bachelors with Honors" level by the end of the weekend. Congratulations to him! I've added his data below. 7 of the 8 students earned diplomas during the course. Some are already listed on the online official BU graduates list and a few will be submitting videos later to improve their scores.

I hope more of you will join us for our event next year.

By looking back at past posts and your PMs to me, the best I can figure is:
Exam I: 56 + Exam II: 21 = BU Score: 77

I look forward to seeing how much you can improve the Exam II score. That is a better test of actual game-playing ability.

Confirmed - BU exam 1 (attempt 1) = 34 on 26/6.
BU exam 2 (attempt 1) = 21 on 26/6

BU exam 1 (attempt 3) = 56 on 7/7
Current combined total = 56 + 21 = 77

Yeah exam 1 can be 'practiced' to help with higher scores for sure. (especially the wagon wheel & target drills - 40 points on offer just for those 2 sections)
My 2nd attempt exam 2 scores should hopefully be at least a little better after some practice this week.
