Last Night's Out

When the bartender calls last call and the place is about to close, my buddies and I play
speed pool, or rather a sped up version of whatever we were just playing.
In this case 10 ball. These racks often turn into the nicest outs of the night.
Your brain does some amazing shit when you let it go on autopilot.

My buddy ran to the 7, missed, left me this. This was my out to close the night.
All circus shots. Full masse over a short distance... warp speed bank (the position
makes no sense, I coulda stopped or maybe gone with high inside but my brain said
"high outside dude! Load 'er up!"). Then one of my favorite shots that I never hit in competition,
low inside railfirst to spin back down off the 2nd rail.

I can't do any of this shooting normal speed.

Awesome!

Funny you should post this, this week. On Tuesday, we were trying to run a Singles qualifier around the existing matches. The guy I was matched up with, a better player than I, was about to be called for his regular match. He and I both sped up significantly, to get in as many games as we could before he had to stop for his team match.

I was amazed at how easily I made some shots, and more amazed at the leaves. Made me wonder if perhaps I should consider speeding up (some, not that much, of course) in general.

I was going to post about it and see what folks thought. Then you made this thread. Pretty cool.

:p

Creedo,

Didn't you know that when the bar tender calls last call, he or she also flips a switch on the tables that makes them pull down any & all balls that get close to a pocket.

And you thought it was your relaxed brain getting out of your minds way.

Best,
Rick

Haha, it was magnets all along, I should have known!

But seriously, there's something to the speed up thing. I keep telling myself I will try it
more in serious play, but then I just sort of automatically settle down to a slower pace.
I wish I could tap into that automatic shotmaking and perfect touch when shooting my normal rhythm.
I have heard guys like john schmidt recommend it in videos.

Creedo,

This is just a bit of food for thought. I am not a fast player, some faster players might say I am on the slow side. I am actually playing faster with TOI. Now that said, at least before TOI, I was very much a feel player.

Now to the food for thought. I certainly do not know your game or how you play it, but perhaps, in your normal mode you are focused a bit too much on the mechanics/physics/stroke fundamentals, etc.

Then in the fast mode you just focus on the execution of shot & just trust ALL of that other stuff to your subconscious.

I never give any thought to my 'fundamentals' I don't even know what they are & I don't care.

I only care about executing the shot at hand & that is my focus. I trust my subconscious mind. I don't focus on PSR, stance, or anything but the shot.

That is probably what you are doing in that speed up thing. Just step up & shoot...&....make it.

Just a thought.

Best,
Rick

Practice is for practice & that is 'work'. Play is the time to play & the object of play is to have fun & not work.

I agree that adjusting your speed can help with the brain getting in the way of the shot. Just don't go so fast that the brain doesn't have a say in the strategy!

I assume you didn't bother to diagram the 4th shot because you made the obvious 5-rail bank in the side?

I opted to just jump that ball straight into the hole because I already had masse, bank, and kick
in the run. Jump was all that's left.

The 4-banker on the 10-ball is more natural...in the same pocket the 9-ball went.

Much easier to make on a Diamond than a Gold Crown.

Nice hit on the 9-ball, CreeDo
