The document of our pool related road trip across the U.S. updated daily

Rachel Abink and Rhea are nothing alike, not even close.... One, Rachel played WAY better, two, while Rachel may have her blond moments she is pretty freaking sharp and has decent street smarts. If Rachel still played and was around I'd stake Rachel giving Rhea the 7 and then stake her giving like the 7 & the last 3. Rachel will beat most men she would see on a day to day basis, Rhea, not so much....

Even if Rachel would make a one match comeback, I would stake her against Rhea. Johnnyt

Rhea has no roots currently so also no responsibilities... Maybe she goes out and hustles enough to keep herself fed and somewhere warm at night... She plays pool and doesn't fit into the system....

Maybe she doesn't afford a new car or get to eat filet-mignon.... She plays pool and doesn't fit into the system...

Is there a future in it?? Well it's the future.. No one has a crystal ball to even know if there is a future for any of us... You have a retirement? No you hold paper... You own gold? can't eat it... Unless you are raising food basically nothing you own may be worth anything in one foreseeable future even if it remote....

Let her go do what she wants to do... It's not hurting anything and you know what... She gets to play pool and not have to fit into the system......

Safety is an illusion... In almost every aspect of life.. Anything you have can be taken from you by events and agencies beyond your control except your education.... be it from a university, the school of hard knocks, or learned out on the road playing pool... The key is applying what you learn when you get knocked down to flat broke and have to get up and start again......

Everyone acts like they think she expects to go out and bust everyone... Maybe she just wants to play pool and if she gets the right spots and manages her money who says she can't... At least for a little while..

Go out and play pool Rhea... and F their SYSTEM???

Chris

If repairing typewriter is what she wants to do then she will have come to that conclusion by knowing all the options. To which I would say good luck honey, maybe consider making leather typewriter cases on the side?

Oh, so you would advise her of the pitfalls, lack of income, and no future in typewriter repairs, correct ?

Ladies & Gentlemen, Please do not make any attempt to adjust your computers John Barton is now going to tell everyone exactly how it is. He is now ready to take over complete control of this thread and you had better not even think your thoughts are remotely correct. Sadly I have now finished lunch and have to get back to hanging my Christmas lights. Back to the John Barton tells it like it is show!!

You got it all wrong buddy. I offered an alternative narrative. One that millions of people follow with varying degrees of emotional and financial success. And that's exactly how it really is.

Didn't say it isn't "correct" to advise someone to settle down and get a job and give up their dream. In the context that not everyone can follow their dreams and actually be whatever they imagine that they want or should be that advice makes more practical sense. But you won't find me being the one to give that advice exclusively. If asked I weight the options and if I think a person can go for it without harming others and without committing actual suicide over it then I say do it.

What's the worst that can happen? A hard landing with a good dose of reality? Big deal. A good amount of the world's most successful people have gone broke a few times in their lives chasing dreams. People come out of adversity ALL THE TIME.

People go the safe route as Chris pointed out and LOSE EVERYTHING all the time. They often bounce back and go on to tell the story of how they did it.

Hi Buddy, Now that we are buddies I would like to point out that I said Rhea should get an education or some sort of actual employment quite some time ago in this thread. I would also like to point out I was correct in saying you would now take over and correct everyone about everything at least as you see it. See the bold statement above. Your singular obsession with having to feel that you are right about everything seems, insecure... Have a great day BUDDY! ;)

I will buddy. I'd like point out buddy that I didn't disagree with your advice buddy. I merely offered my own pal and guys like you jumped on me friend.

I don't think I am right about everything fellow. I think I have a point of view buddy and that point of view is based on my own life experience friend. Understand me now pal?

I have been employed since I was 16, at 22 I went into the military full time, after the military I went to college for computer programming. I then went into sales for about a year. Then I opened my own successful business for 3 years. Eventually I decided to work at a pool room for a year. Then I became a computer technician for a week. Then I passed the Missouri state licence for Life accidental and Health Insurance and sold Insurance for a couple months. Then I went on the road for 6 months. Eventually I got a job working at a call center for Victoria Secret for a year. Then a fortune 500 bank bought the building I worked in and retained the employees and I chose to learn entry level debt collections. I excelled at debt collection and became the #1 entry level debt collector at the company averaging $48,000.00/year. That is how I got the promotion to move to Ohio from New Mexico. Even in Ohio at Mid level collections I was in the top of the charts and on my way to making $77,000.00/year in what I averaged for the 2 months I worked in Ohio right before I resigned to go on the road with Gene.

I am pretty sure I could do whatever I want to do with my life. If I had decided to stick with the path I was on right before I met Gene in about a year to 2 years I would have been making 6 figures every single year. I was only 2 seats away from our Recovery department and the top performers in that department all made between $100k-$200k annually. But guess what? I'd rather play pool and you know what? The job I had came naturally to me it wasn't even difficult.

let me get this straight.

you worked in new mexico for a year averaging 4,000 a month. got a promotion nd moved to ohio and was averaging 6,400 a month for the 2 months you were there before going on the road with gene.

i recall gene saying you lived in an apartment with no electricity and drove a piece of shit car that could not even make it outa town when you and him hit the road.

unbelievable financial management there.... wow .... just wow is all i can say.

Type Writer Repair vs. Going on the Road to Become a Great Player...

Here's the difference between the two -- one of these things actually exists -- Type Writer Repair!. The other doesn't. It is a dead paradigm. As a matter of fact, I'm not so sure there has ever been a player at her level that went out on the road in pursuit of becoming a champion. It's just not an effective model.

Most players worked their butts off to reach the shortstop level and then and only then did they even consider going out on the road. The road only makes sense for thoroughbred players -- those that don't need to still spend hours a day on the table working out the kinks. Table time is too expensive for the road player so they quickly give up on practicing in favor of just matching up. This is fine, if the last piece of the puzzle is learning how to bear down, or learning to overcome anxiety or you're simply out to prove you're the best! But using this method to finally figure out how to spin your rock three rails in and out of the corner doesn't make much sense. Practice is a much more effective method when it comes to working out the kinks.

I guess I just don't get it.

There's a huge difference between learning how to gamble wisely and pursuing excellence on the pool table. Being able to do one does not necessarily lead to the other. What the underlying theme of Gene's threads (and by extension Rhea's) are is learning how to properly gamble.

This certainly seems fruitless to me in this day and age.

Pool is potentially the least expensive sporting pursuit there is. If anybody really, really, really, wants to become a champion player (or at least attempt it) all they need to do is find a way to get themselves a pool table (this may require a job). Then practice like crazy. You then line up matches (gambling or tournaments) to keep you focused on your ultimate pursuit -- becoming a champion.

This thread has the cart before the horse if you ask me. Gambling should be used more to fuel one's passion for the game (read practice) not as a shortcut around it. There's this idea that if one figures out a way to end up with the cash they will become a champion. I think it probably happens the other way around -- one works to become a champion and then they get the cash.

I think it is only us U.S. players that still think you can overcome all of your games weaknesses just by getting out there and matching up.

But of course I'm neither a champion, nor am I a successful gambler, but I do read a lot on AZ, so I guess I got that going for me.

I lost $7,000.00 gambling in Columbus Ohio before Gene met me.

The first 5 weeks I lived in a motel. Then I stayed somewhere else for 2 weeks with a friend that I met at the poolhall in Whitehall before I moved into the apartment I had. I moved out of the apartment less than 3 weeks after moving in. The reason there wasn't electric is because I decided not to even put electric in my name when I knew I was about to leave the place and travel with Gene.

My car broke down for a totally different reason. I just never gave it an oil change the entire time I had it. The engine just quit working it wasnt an old car I still owed $6200.00 on it.

Gene

Where is Gene? Has anyone heard from him about what precipitated this "break-up"?

Rhea- my only advice; give it up. At best you will subsist for a very short time. You are a below average player and have no skills to survive as a pool player on the road. At worst, pick up the papers. Bad shit can happen, especially as a vagrant, alone, carrying everything you own in your back pack.

Rhea's living a life we can only dream about: No car, no cell phone, no computer nor a permanent roof over her head. I won't ask if she has health insurance for the times when she might actually need to use it. But now she can play pool and gamble to her heart's content...until the bankroll is all gone. If Rhea needs some medical attention, she can just go to the ER, like her "mentor" does.

According to JB, Rhea might meet her future millionaire hubby/backer in a diner, whereupon she'll live happily after ever. Who's to say it can't happen, right JB? ;)

Maybe you should get some help with your gambling problem instead of going on the road and get deeper in the hole...
I think BasementDweller had it just about right.

Rhea get off here and figure out what you want to do.

Everyone here will have am opinion. No one can live your life but every one can comment in it.

My advice is to stick with gene and really learn to play if truly aspire to becoming pro speed.

If you just need him to throttle your need to be in action then it can only end badly at some point.

There is a lot of wisdom in this thread if you are ready to listen.
