The Tenth Annual George Fels Memorial Straight Pool Challenge at Derby City will be taking place January 25, 2015 to January 31, 2015. The qualifying attempts will take place Sunday through Wednesday.

For every $100 paid in, the player gets 12 chances. There is no limit to the number of times they can enter. They rack 14 balls and take the 15th ball in hand and cue ball in hand and see how many balls they can run . The three high runs for each of the first 4 days are paid $300, $200, and $100 respectively. The high run of the event gets an additional $1,000.00. The high runs have been as follows:

2007 High Run: 160 by Mika Immonen
2008 High Run: 147 by Mika Immonen;

The qualifiers and some of the matches will be streamed by TV Mike at http://www.tvmike.tv/premium.html. It will be available under his premium tab. You will need to become a member which costs $7.99 a month but that will get you access to the live stream and much more. Players who have confirmed for this year include John Schmidt, Mika Immonen, Dennis Orcollo, Alex Pagulayan, Alex Lely, Konstantin Stepanov, Ruslan Chinakhov, Evgeny Stalev and many others.

We had 45 entries last year which increased the prize fund to $12,500.00. We will work hard to improve our numbers this year. I spoke with Chad at Diamond today and he says he will try to do his best to make sure we get an extra table or two for the final day rush.

There is now $10,000.00 committed in added money this year.
We would like to thank our sponsors Diamond Billiards, Simonis Cloth, Aramith, Bob Jewett, Stu Mattana, Rich Klein and Stan Haines.

If anyone wants to make a donation to this event, money can be sent by check or money order to the following address with a notation Derby City Straight Pool:

Derby City Classic
4700 New Middle Rd.
Jeffersonville, IN 47130

or you can paypal to my account at gwtlaw@aol.com

We will be upstairs in the large room overlooking the arena that we had last year. Stop by and say hi. If anyone wants to volunteer to help for a while as a scorekeeper, let me know. It is a great opportunity to watch how these monsters take apart a rack.

10th Annual George Fels Memorial? I think you may need an * in there.
We all know George only departed a year ago.
He may have been playing pool in the middle of the night and in his underwear for those other 9 years... and he may have considered it heaven... but he wasn't dead.

The Derby City Straight Pool Challenge is in its tenth year.

Last year, we re-named it after George.

What would YOU like to call it?

You probably knew the man, I only knew him through his writing and commentary.
I admired his wit and his ability to turn a phrase.
Perhaps I fell short in a nod to George's drollness.
Having said that, I'd offer for your consideration

The Tenth* Annual George Fels Memorial Straight Pool Challenge at Derby City

*minus eight

Thank you, Dennis!

For all you do for 14.1 and the players. In another thread in this forum I'm trying to explore the 14.1 challenge format which you at Derby City and Heather, Steve, and Charles at the SBE for years, along with wonderful folks like Bob Jewett, have brought to us as a vehicle for partial fundraising to make World 14.1 #75 happen in August.

update

So, I've been communicating with some of the players on Facebook.

Of our 8 finalists last year, 4 will not be there this year.

Darren Appleton and Ralf Souquet in China (along with Thorsten, Max, and Corey)
Huidji cannot make it, and Niels staying home as his second child was just born yesterday or today.

But the Russians are coming back. Evgeny Stalev, Konstantin Stepanov, and Ruslan Chinakhov.

Nick van den Berg will be carrying the flag for the Dutch, probably with a couple of young guns. Alex Lely will be there, too.

Alex Pagulayan and Dennis Orcollo will be doing the Big Foot ten ball, so I assume they will play.

John Schmidt,Mr. 400 will be there and I have invited two of his Mosconi Cup teammates, Justin Hall and Justin Bergman. Bergman shot pretty good at the World's last year.

John Morra, Jason Klatt, Mike Dechaine, and Jayson Shaw all say that they will play.

Johnny Archer will give it another try. He had a 146 one year. Shaun Wilkie has a high run of 197 and says he will give it a try.

After a two year absence, it will be nice to see Mika Immonen again. He got the high run a couple of years.

And 400 ball runner and World 14.1 Champion Stephan Cohen will be competing in our event for the first time.

Although we will miss some of our regulars it will be nice to see an infusion of some new blood into the event. We look forward to some good competition captured on video for all to see.

That is a strong field. I wonder what happened to Oliver Ortmann. He is one of my favorite 14.1 players and I haven't heard anything about him in quite a while.

Oliver never makes it to Derby. Long way to go. Expensive trip.

High runs yesterday.

Mika Immonen 224
Nick Van den Berg 149
Jayson Shaw 145

Dennis Orcollo 127

Went until 1:30

Starts again in a half hour

Dennis - I'm on kind of a ball cleaning kick right now. Can you tell me exactly how the balls are being cleaned for the 14.1 table, how frequently, ball machine, etc? Is it the same for the 9 ball tournament?

How are the balls spreading?

Thanks,

High runs yesterday.

Mika Immonen 224
Nick Van den Berg 149
Jayson Shaw 145

Dennis Orcollo 127

Evidently Mika is playing better than he did in Midlothian.

At one time Greg Sullivan was offering a bonus for a run over 200. Was that in place this year?

We have no special 200 ball bonus that I know of this year. High run gets a thousand that is active all the way through the tourney portion as well. End of a tourney match anyone on a 50 or higher run may continue to try for the high run money.

Cleaning the balls this years is automated thanks to using a diamond dual platter ball cleaner. Here is a link of the cleaner in action in slo mo from a prior year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SukXYHYYTRU

We also use a towel and polish I am not sure what polish is being used but the balls are rolling great.

I would personally like to thank all of our sponsors. Diamond Billiards, Simonis Cloth, Aramith, Bob Jewett, Stu Mattana, Rich Klein and Stan Haines.

And also I thank all of the players showing up looking to play straight pool

And especially i want to thank Bob Jewett for getting this event going at the Derby. You did alot with effort and financial support to promote 14.1 and bring it back to the forefront and get people playing this great game. Thanks Bob.

Here's the leaderboard as of 7pm Tuesday !!!

1. Jayson Shaw - 227
2. Mika Immonen - 224
3. Dennis Orcollo - 197
4. Nick Van Den Berg - 149
5. Warren Kiamco - 145
6. Rusian Chinahov - 100
7. John Schmidt - 99
8. Konstantine Stepanov - 99
