Pool Table From China.....

He told me 6 weeks ago that it would take 6-8 weeks to get here. So I go in there the other day and the table is schedualed to ship on April the
5th. And to top it off its going to take another 5-6 weeks after that! Boy was I ready to put his face through the wall at that point. This is becuase it has already been 6 weeks, and so when it finnally gets here its going to be more like 12 weeks!!

I think I could surf from China to the USA in 12 weeks if the sharks do not get me .......

CL Bailey has a relationship with The Level Best (china roots) - they manufacture billiard supplies and accessories and have introduced a new cloth to the market called Velocity. Pretty good stuff - a worsted cloth that has been tested and is comparable with Simonis and Tour Edition but much lower priced.
I believe you get better quality products from American companies that manufacture products in china as compared to products made by independent china manufacturers.

Level Best is a company started by Jackson Lee. He is an importer that my family has known for 20+years. He is originally from Taiwan. Tai-Pei I believe. He was importing chinese products to the USA 20+ years ago making friends and standing behind his products. I do not know how many if any partners he has in Level Best but I know his integrity. We have experimented with a some Velocity cloth he gave us for free to cover our tables with in our pool room and I have to say it has held up VERY well. I would say better than Simonis (not as fast) and almost as well as Championship Tour Edition cloth. Just my personal opinion...not an official company endorsement. We were pleasantly surprised with its quality. It was Jackson Lee's business contacts in China that allowed CL Bailey to build a quality plant in mainland China and still keep up the quality level. Some companies today are just leasing out their name and really have nothing to do with the manufacturing process of the tables they sell. You really almost have to be an insider to get any knowledge of some companies.

I just ordered a pool table from a local billiards place about 6 weeks ago from today (3-29-07). It is shipped from China so I assume that it is made there. At first I was skeptical about the idea, but then he told me that the cushions were Olhausens own.... Accu-Fast. The slate is 1 1/4 inch thick (like 1000lbs.), and the cloth is Titan. It was not too pricy, and it comes with a lot of accessories. The reason he had none in stock is because it is a more contemporary style table, than just the regular wood kind.

The one thing that I am worried about is: I have heard a lot of controversy about tables made in China, or billiard equipment that comes from China. Is this a bad thing? They have a few tables in their store and they play wonderfully. I think they are so cheap because they don't have a brand name on them, like Brunswick. So I'm just curious if I made the right decision, I dont want to get screwed.

BTW. He told me 6 weeks ago that it would take 6-8 weeks to get here. So I go in there the other day and the table is schedualed to ship on April the 5th. And to top it off its going to take another 5-6 weeks after that! Boy was I ready to put his face through the wall at that point. This is becuase it has already been 6 weeks, and so when it finnally gets here its going to be more like 12 weeks!! I thought good buisnesses were suppost to tell you a certain time and then suprise you by having it come early, well... these guys are working on the opposite basis I guess.

So the point of the story is, I'm having some doubts about the table coming from China and all.

What do you guys think?

Brunswick are made in China too!!!!! They are just assembled here in the USA.

Well good luck. Some of the imported tables I have seen had inadequate looking cross beams, (beam is a strong word for these as they were the size of a regular 2x4) and the levelers on these beams looked very flimsy considering the weight of the slate. Other imported tables I looked at looked like they had good stout construction, thick cabinets and strong leg mounting.
I guess I'd say look at when it gets here and make sure it's like the one you have already examined. Check to see if the slate is nice and thick. Also ask about the Olhausen cushions, I'm with the poster above, I don't think you can get them on other tables besides Olhausen. Hopefully, the table will arrive, the set up will be good and you'll be happy.

One more thing, Ron Cook, just make sure a tsunami doesn't wash you up on Gilligan's Island.

I say to get your money back. I bought a $5,000 Brunswick (15 years ago) for $3,000.00 from a dealer who had overstock and needed to move them. In addition, look around at universities they often sell dirt cheap as they don't realize what they have.

I also learned that if you want the table dead level place a 2' X 3' piece of glass on it and slow roll a ball. That will tell you if the table is level. Most mechanics do not use this technique as it is too time consuming and not needed or so I am told. I guess it depends on how picky you are.

My pool table that came from China was so bad that I had to beg someone to take out out of my place for FREE.

The slate support was not cut right so the slate could not be centered properly. Thus it developed Grand Canyons between each piece of slate, and this was after a so called professional fixed the table. The screws that held the slate to the support hung out over the sides in some cases and did not even go into the wood support.

The rails were made out of bubble gum. Dead as doornails. The distributor did not give a hoot about any of my problems.

I would recommned that you cancel the deal. I used to own a 4x8 and pretty good ones can be had for $1,400.

lots of good advice on here. lots of knowledgable people. your table will not come with accu-fast. the table i like the best in the industery is the olhausen reno. should be about $2000 to $2500 maybe as pricing across the country is different. i would recommend the reno if money is your point instead of quality.

It's got a 1-year warrenty on it, so I guess I could go ahead and give it a shot. I researched the company that they are getting it from, dltbilliards.com, and it seems pretty good quality.

A funny thing about the salesperson there was he tried to sell us a floor model table for like 50$ less. He said, "We have already sold 3 of those tables this morning," (mmmm, thats sounds logical, figuring that we got there before it opened) and then he promised that the table would be sold by the afternoon, and we should get it because that was the last day of the sale. 6 weeks later I walked into the store and the same table was sitting there. So your prob. right the Accu-Fast cushions was prob. a big fat lie. O well, the tables there are very nice, and play nice as well, so I guess I could give it a shot and if its crap, then I'll send it back.

Thanks for everyone's useful comments!:)

They dont have much-Average price for a used GC3 is about $1300 and there are plenty of them around.

Facts of life

Companies dictate their decisions by costs and the market for such products.
American Companies have been doing the same thing for well over a 100 years, but instead of China, they have gone into economically depresssed areas in the USA and put in factories where labor rates are cheap, and ended up putting people to work.

Now, the name of that song is China, doing the same thing except quality control is a problem, China will fix that too in time, just as the Japanese did in several product markets, including Cars. Meanwhile Americans will become a 3rd world nation, with no middle income class existing as before, and the other nations prospering. And if China's cost become too much, they will just go to another cheaper country.

I'm kinda lucky only cuz Kasson tables are made in the town i live in lol WOOT!

Personally, I'd make sure you get in writing when ordering a table, that you are getting what you order'd.

Or if you like the floor model, just ask for that one right there lol. And make them take it from the floor lol. Sometimes thats the best way to get a good table.

Even though it might be a demo, it's probably alot better than ordering a table and getting the CHEF's suprise lol.
