Oriented Strand Board

cant answer all these questions, but i did realize what OSB is after i posted asking. all i can say this is the same guy that built the place back in 1998. havent really had any problems since.

and the floor under the Gold Crown has the joists every foot vice 16", and there's going to be a handful more put in right under where the legs will be. you guys think thats enough support?

i got my basement done enough to get my table in and start playing..........thats part of the problem, once you get to that point youre not in a hurry to finish lol, havent worked on it since june

The F.J. at 12" O.C. is fine under the table if they are large enough to carry the live and dead loads that the flooring system is engineered for.

Russ....

In the midwest building codes are diff than LA. OSB Sheating on the outside is actually very common as it gives a structure rigidity( more than you would think). Osb as a subfloor is even more common, usually 1/2" for most areas, under a pool table it would prob be at least 3/4. If he used an engineered joist instead of 2x's, You might get away with 16 centers and 3/4 osb. But its prob a bit cheaper the way its done. The short boards under the windows arent for support, theyre just nailers for the bottom window support. There is a cripple stud right next to the main stud that carries the weight of the header. Osb is used almost exclusively as a subfloor since its cheaper than regular plywood. While not as stiff most people dont notice it much. In 90% of the new houses I see go up, they use osb as sheating as well. It beats the hell out of the blackboard I see when I do remodels.

just an update here.........

i dont know if i should be ticked off or not, but here goes. it seems completely illogical to me that my builder would have exposed the existing area without having the new 12 foot section completely sealed off from the elements. so, we had a storm come through tuesday and the wind blew rain all over my pillows, desk, couch, my old tv, bank statements, checks, etc, etc.

then that night, when i was eating and watching WPBA Peoria 2005 i noticed a wasp go flying by. then i realized in the new section, up top where the trusses overhang, where the soffit goes, all of that area was still open. bugs were seeing the lights and just flying in.

just dunno what to think about all of this.

DCP

Bummer..........they should seal off your living area completely if the understanding was clear that you would still be living there during the remodel.

Re. the OSB, we use 3/4" plywood for subfloors on the houses out here in L.A. and never use OSB for roof sheathing or shear wall.

But the houses are on a little grander scale.....:D

Russ......

update.........

they have started the mudding and sanding of the drywall inside. the siding is pretty much done. the guttering is going to have to be modified on the front side. the inside steps are done, and its a close shave up where my head passes. when i am on the 3rd step my head comes right to the edge of the 2x8. the builder thinks he can cut another 3-4 inches out of that 2x8 since there is another joist in very close proximity.

anyway, new countertop and carpet should be here next week. builder thinks he'll have it painted by friday evening, monday at the latest. hope its friday so i can take all of the plastic covers off of my sofa, recliner, HDTV, desk, computer, etc, etc and not have to worry about the dust and paint anymore.

new garage door/opener is going to be installed monday. the electrician has the wiring done, but is waiting to move the ceiling fan and install my chandelier/pool table light until the painting is done.

p.s. my builder had laid a piece of wood up against my tv the other day.........

the builder is all done, the countertop arrives wednesday (10/17) and hopefully the new blue/grey carpet will be installed next week. once that happens i can contact Orner's and have them come down to move the table back upstairs.

once its upstairs, i can then get into a new practice routine. might take a few days/weeks to enjoy the new cloth before i settle into the practice routine. anxious to see how the new light works out with the table.

the practice routine will focus on such things as working on the Mother Drills, mechanics, preshot routine, making the routine shots, working on speed control, controlling the cue ball accurately, using english, becoming a shotmaking master, etc, etc.

keeping my fingers crossed that having easier access to the table will improve the game..........:o

Sounds like a promising situation for you.

I'm surious, how often do you get out to shoot other people? Do you play on any leagues or tournaments? Do you match up with anyone for fun or money?

Just curious. The more you get out and match up in any type of competition, the more it will help your game out.

In L.A. you need plywood to keep those grand houses together when they A.) get lost in a mudslide...B.) get shaken apart in an earthquake...C. someone needs an excuse to sell a shack out there for $595,000...

dont have much opportunity to play other people around this small town. i dont even know if there are any leagues around here. i agree i need competition, so i think i will go and bump the open invitation thread for anyone that wants to play some 9-Ball once the table is moved upstairs.

I think you will find that you are going to have a hard time practicing with nobody to play. By that, I mean you are going to find yourself loosing interest. You have to remember, practice is the cause and playing is the result.

here's the latest:

new platinum blue granite countertop was installed this morning. didnt turn out quite as light as i thought. seems like the sample had some whitish in the background, but this was more on the gray side. guess thats granite for ya. still looks fine though. was funny watching them guys lug it up the steps, they were huffing and puffing.

the new blueish/gray carpet arrives friday. and i just got off the phone with Orner Billiards in Indy about moving the GCIV back upstairs. sounds like they can get to me fairly quickly right now.

the only question is which color cloth do i want to go with? blue is the predominant color in the upstairs apartment, and if i go with powder blue again it could be blue overkill. some people say the blue cloth would be fine amongst all the rest of the blue. others say i better go with green. Orner's has the standard Simonis green in stock, so they wouldnt have to order it like they would the powder blue.

Go with Simonis 860 Tournament Blue... if you have to wait for them to order it in stock, it's well worth it. It's very easy on the eyes, and the balls stand out better against the tournament blue.

I have been debating the same thing for my table. I think that I am going with the darker of those three blues!!

DCP......post up some pics when its done!!

Russ....

funny, my decorator gal just called, said she stopped by to check and try and get an idea what kind of border it might need. we talked about all the blue, and when i told her i had blue cloth on the table now and wasnt sure whether i should change to green or keep the blue, she emphatically said "You Have Enough Blue!"

not sure what i will do now. i guess if i change to green and would prefer either the Powder Blue or Tournament Blue i can have it changed out in about a year or so.

i am going to get my tape out of when the GCIV was installed with the standard simonis green back in January 2003. see how it looks before i make my final decision. thanks to everyone for all the input and advice. and once again, good to see you speaking/posting to me again Blackjack.

DCP

First off, I wouldn't give a rats-ass what my decorator says. If I want blue and she thinks it's going to be too much...so be it. Call me a traditionalist or old fashion, but I perfer standard green.

When I first bought my GC about 12 years ago, I wanted burgandy. The local supplier didn't have it in stock and I needed to get my table set for a new year's eve party within a few days, so I went with green. Later I was glad I did and I lost the desire to go with the burgandy. I played in a pool hall in texas awhile back and didn't care for the blue they had. I am not sure if it was tounament blue, but I think it was. Another reason I perfer green is because that I what I always play on when playing competitive. If I was playing on TB during competition, then I would probably go with TB on my personal table.

I've always sworn that pool tables are GREEN. but... Blackjack makes a dammed good point noting that the balls stand out better on blue. Well.. it's a good point if it's true and I'm thinkin it just might be true/factual or they wouldn't be using it as the new standard for tournamets. But I still think pool tables are green and anything else is a sacralidge.

the carpet installation got moved back a day, now saturday morning. the loveseat is green, so the cloth is going to be standard simonis green 860. i am on Orner's ToDo list, so hopefully by the end of next week i'll have the GCIV upstairs.

when that happens, no more spiders, cobwebs, bugs, dirt, dust, water on the floor, high humidity, cold air, hot air, flickering lights, no more running up and down the stairs to the bathroom, no more running up and down the stairs to get something to drink, pretty much able to practice as long as i want, when i want, how i want without having to brave the elements, and the other elements listed above.

i can even put some of my billiards tapes in and play them while i am at the table. wake up in the middle of the night wide awake, grab a cue and practice whatever.

DCP

i broke my entertainment console thing last night. my uncle and i tried to scoot it and it wasnt sturdy enough to handle it, and broke apart. those cheap little wood dowels wont survive much. i think it can still be used, just get the middle section that broke out of the way, and i can still use the sides and top. have to find something to put in the middle to support the 110 pound HDTV.

Orner's called this a.m., wanting to come down tomorrow and move the GCIV. but not knowing how the carpet install is going to go tomorrow, and with everything piled up in the kitchen area and not really any way to get the heavy stuff moved back, i told them they better wait. so they are coming next saturday. no big deal.
