So whats the biggest bet (amount) you have ever seen played for?

I am sure we can get some good stories out of KM or Jay H on this one:eek:

over $100,000 one pocket match between Cliff Joyner and Jack Cooney in Atlanta 6 or 7 years ago. That is what the bet was, but I was told there was some dealing going on (ie. dumping, etc.). I've seen 5 figures several times.

I heard James Walden played a set for around $100k but not sure who with. I saw Jack Cooney and Toby Fleharty play for $20k.

archie played bobby baldwin in vegas at the rum runner and won 1.5 million over 3 days @ 50K/rack, there were alot of people there, after that Archie got pumped up to about 27million, in berads book it says 30 mil, Freddie is close enough, the balance he won playing poker and craps the the horse shoe, Jack binion put doyle brunson in action heads up playing poker against archie and archie took him down, they also had 100 tmes odds at craps so he didnt hasve the best of it but he was deep enough to last and take jack down some more, he was on a good run for along time. he lost it all, Toby beat him for either 600 or 800 thousand and bought a piece of Cue Club from Henery, far as I know they are still partners, although i last I heard of this was a few years ago.

a month before the big score at the rum runner from bobby, he was playing $100 a game one pocket with Terry(cant remember his last name) I tried to match up with Archie but he wanted the nuts and is a miserable person-I didnt want to play him, he wanted the 7 at that time I had no shot of winning back then, i was in a slump and had no $$$.

i know more details about the whole thing but wont put it in the street, it was all legit, What I never could figure out is why Bobby lost 1.5 million to him when he was flat, I heard he had stake horses in Greece. Bobby is to smart to go off to a guy that was only playing $100 1P-he wouldnt bet more he didnt have it to lose a month before.

this is a true story ask anyone who lives in vegas, Mr. Beard in his book Gospool is close, its a good book. buy it there are alot of good stories to read in it.

Fatboy,
There is a good story about the original pool game in Barry Greenstein's poker book. Bobby was a high stakes poker player with tons of cash, and Archie was broke. He only had a grand or two when they started.

The lesson was obvious: Whoever walks in with the most money has the most to lose.

Actually, I've heard from several that Archie had hit a Kenoticket for about $20000 and that is what got things going for him.

His story has been on the Diiscovery channel several times. Lost 11 million one night playing craps, according to Discovery.

James Walden beat Flyboy in Baton Rouge. Ask Melinda as she was there.

I would have to say a guy who lost his cue, his money, and his car. He bet everything he had in this world except the clothes on his back. To me, that is a bigger bet than some multi-millionaire loosing a mill or two.

Well, I have to ive it to ya, that is betting it all.

i still find it hard to believe that Bobby would get his nose open and go off that bad with no upside, sure he had more to lose, but knowing he could only win $1000, chasing 1.5 mil just dosent make sence, Bobby is too smart.

I was told by a old-timer who will remain nameless said that prior to that happening(the Bobby score) back in the earliy 80's Archie made a big score, I believe that Bobby had some insight to that, or archie had some silent partners etc. There is no way that Bobby would get his nose open and blow $1.5 trying to get even with no potential to win anything, he is just to smart. Like i said I know alot about the Archie side of the score but I never understood the Bobby part. It was real, it wasnt business etc. And your 100% correct archie was flat before that, he would play $100/game 1P or $50 9 ball, that was it not a penny more. I saw him hanging around the pool room 4-5 nights a week for a few months before the score, he was in casinos all the time too, the word was he just came to vegas from greece.

They started at $50,000/game, where did Archie get his first barrel, Bobby aint gonna not post, Archie knows he would be a grease spot in the desert if he air barreled Bobby. See what I mean? it just dosent add up. But it was real so someone somewhere was involved, what else could it be? And because the action went on for a months afterwards it was a real game.

I have seen People I know Go at it for $7,500 a set. I know it ain't 100k but
I'm just 17 and anything over $3,800 is a lot to be playing pool for.
The Most I've played for was $145.00 a set Backed of course. Without a backer 15-20 per game.

James Walden and Jack Cooney played a set for 100K at Derby City several years ago. In Detroit they used to play five and ten thousand a game One Pocket on the 5x10 snooker table every night.

Archie did beat Bobby Baldwin playing ten, twenty and forty thou a game 9-Ball on a bar table. They started out for 200 a game (Archie had 800 when he started). Archie won over a million and then beat him for a million more playing heads up 7 Card Stud. Archie then beat a who's who of top poker players one after another for a couple of million more before taking on the dice table at the Horseshoe. He won all the $5,000 chips in the house, over ten million and moved on to the Mirage and Caesars and continued his onslaught.

He ran his bankroll up to over 30 mil and paid off the Feds four million. Now he was free and clear with 27 mil. It was gone in a year. Poof! I advised him to invest ten million in an investment account, when he still had seventeen mil. I had somebody good in Beverly Hills for him. He would have made around 60K a month in income. He wouldn't do it. After he lost the money, he told me he should have listened to me. True story!

I heard about that vegas story before. Never knew the actual amounts though. Nice, good solid replys. Wish I could get pumped up to that amount...keep 'em comin'

Yeah, I was there! James Walden took $150,000 from Flyboy in Baton Rouge at Lamberts. James won about 5am or so (after several days off and on playing) and since it was so late and so many days, there was hardly anyone else there. His backer slowly clapped his hands when the last ball was banked in. It was awesome to witness!

I've shared this story before.

I'd rather not name names, but those who regularly frequented the Golden Q in Elmhurst, NY in the early 1980's will already know this story.

A fairly well-off Chinese fellow who owned a nice little restaurant in Chinatown gambled for about thirteen hours against one of the regular action players there in what I seem to recall was 1982. It started out for 1,000 a set, but the stakes got higher and higher, and before long the game was race to seven 9-ball for 10,000 a set. By sunrise, the Chinese fellow was stuck over 60,000 and was nearly out of money. He wasn't giving up yet, however, and asked for a double or nothing game. Not too surprisingly, his opponent protested that he had nothing left to bet with. The Chinese fellow said "How about if I put up my restaurant in Chinatown?" Sure enough, the wager was accepted, and sure enough the fellow lost his restaurant! It was quite painful to watch. By the end of the night, the fellow had lost 60,000 and a restaurant worth the same.

In short, the highest stake I've ever seen played for is "one Chinese restaurant."

Are you telling me the guy transferred ownership of the restaurant and the winner took it and started making won ton soup every day? I would think they would agree to some other arrangement after the fact, no?.

Couldn't say. Any Golden Q players from the early 1980's out there who can answer this?

I wasn't there, but Archie told me all this. He may be stretching the truth a little. :)

I do know that I gave him financial advice when he told me he paid off the IRS and had 17 mil left.

Fat Boy,
because I collect alot of Black Boar Cues, (www.blackboarcustomcues.com ) I was contacted by some people that say they own Karas's Black Boar cue that he used and They attached a signed Affidavit from Karas about his run in Vegas.
Is it true that he used a Black Boar Cue?
