Break Stats -- CSI Invitational 8-Ball Championship, July 2014

Here are some break statistics from the 16-player 2014 CSI Invitational 8-Ball Championship played at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas with pay-per-view streaming by CSI.

The conditions for this call-shot 8-Ball event included: Diamond 9-foot table with regular pro-cut pockets (4½" corners), Simonis 860 blue cloth, Magic Rack, Cyclop TV balls including the cue ball, jump cues allowed, breaker racks for himself, alternate breaks, break from anywhere behind the line, table open after the break, cue-ball fouls only, a legal break requires that at least 4 balls hit a rail or at least one ball is pocketed (no illegal breaks occurred), and ball in hand anywhere after a foul on the break.

The 15 streamed matches on the feature table (218 games), amounting to 56% of the tournament total of 27 matches, were as follows. [Note: the only players in the event who did not appear on the feature table were Warren Kiamco and John Morra.]

Overall results -- The breaker made at least one ball and did not foul 71% of the time (154 of 218), won 64% of the games (139 of 218), and broke and ran 54% of the games (118 of 218).

Here's a more detailed breakdown of the 218 games.

Breaker made at least one ball and did not foul:

Breaker won the game: 122 (56% of the 218 games)

Breaker lost the game: 32 (15%)

Breaker fouled on the break:

Breaker won the game: 4 (2%)

Breaker lost the game: 14 (6%)

Breaker broke dry (without fouling):

Breaker won the game: 13 (6%)

Breaker lost the game: 33 (15%)

Therefore, whereas the breaker won 64% (139) of all 218 games,

He won 79% (122 of 154) of the games in which he made at least one ball on the break and did not foul.

He won 22% (4 of 18) of the games in which he fouled on the break.

He won 28% (13 of 46) of the games in which he broke dry but did not foul.

He won 27% (17 of 64) of the games in which he either fouled on the break or broke dry without fouling.

Break-and-run games: With alternating breaks, B&R "packages" of the normal type are not possible. But we can still look at the breaks of a given player and see how many he ran on his own successive breaks, and we can call these "alternate-break packages." The 118 break-and-run games (54% of all the games) consisted of 1 alternate-break 6-pack (by Bustamante), 2 alternate-break 5-packs (by P-Y Ko and Orcollo), 3 alternate-break 4-packs ( P-Y Ko, Van Boening, and P-C Ko), 8 alternate-break 3-packs, 16 alternate-break 2-packs, and 34 singles.

8-balls on the break: None.

Thanks for posting the stats. Very illuminating. Essentially unless you can run an 8 ball rack 50% of the time you are not top tier.

Miscellany from the data for the 2014 CSI 8-Ball Championship
[Reminder -- this relates only to the 15 streamed matches, not all 27 matches in the event.]

• The most balls made on a single break was four, twice by P-Y Ko and once each by Souquet, Chang, and Dechaine. The breaker lost 4 of those 5 games.

• The average number of balls made on the break was 1.3 (this includes dry and fouled breaks). Excluding dry breaks, the average was 1.6.

• Following the 18 breaking fouls, the incoming player ran out the game in his first inning 14 times (78%). The breaker won on his second inning the other 4 times.

• The losers won an average of 5.3 games in the 14 races to 9. Only two of the matches went hill/hill. [And only two of the non-streamed matches went hill/hill.]

• The average elapsed time for the 14 races to 9 was 95 minutes, or 6.7 minutes per game. The elapsed time was measured from the lag until the winning ball was made (or conceded), so it includes time for racking and breaks (time-outs).

• The longest match in both elapsed time and average number of minutes per game was P-C Ko def. Dechaine -- 122 minutes (8.7 minutes per game for the 14 games). Dechaine was having troubles with the Magic Rack.

• The shortest match in both elapsed time and average number of minutes per game was P-Y Ko def. Appleton -- 59 minutes (5.4 minutes per game for the 11 games).

• No game on the feature table went beyond 3 innings and only 3 games went to the 3rd inning. 54% of the games were break and runs, and 34% were run out by the non-breaker in his first inning. For each number of innings, the following table shows how many games were won by the breaker in that number of innings, how many games were won by the non-breaker in that number of innings, the sum of those two numbers, and the percentage of the 218 games that were won in that number of innings.

1 inning -- 118 + 74 = 192 (88%)

2 innings -- 19 + 4 = 23 (11%)

3 innings -- 2 + 1 = 3 (1%)

Shane isn't even in top 5 of most successful breakers for the 8 ball event, Even though number of players have smaller sampling size. I recall that his stats for 10 ball event was also not top 5. Even though not known for their breaking Souquet, Hohmann doing better than Shane
