For Cicero Murphy Fan or Collector

Great Find!!!

Great Find, you struck gold on this one! Thank you.

If I could rep you a hundred times, I would do so! Great pictures of Cisero in front of his home!

good reads indeed

The articles on Cisero are good reads and it is interesting to scroll and read some of the other stuff, a snapshot of the time. Have to scroll, some of the stuff on Cisero stops and starts anyway.

Nice finds!

I loved the articles so much that decided to save them on my hdd in case I want to access them without internet available. I believe since we are not going to chase any commercial dividends from personal use we are not violating the copyright (Google's or whoever).
I had to spend some time and effort doing the screenshots and would like to share the results with you.

Book

I wish they'd write a book about him, before all the stories that people know about him are lost.

I have the same problem here in Tuscaloosa. We have a living legend Marshall "Squirrel" Carpenter that still plays 1p here. The stories this man knows are incredible, he's played with all the greats many times over. He could fill 2 books most likely.

Any authors on Az?

Again Thank Everyone for the reps. It suprising what other billiards/pool related articles I found in both Ebony and Jet magazines. Or just seaching players name at books-google.

billiardshot...Nice find! Cisero Murphy's nephew, who lives in Atlanta, posts here, occasionally, I think, as Mr Lucky7. He might be interested in owning this memorabilia.

I sent Phil a link to this thread to have him check it out.

Here is another article I found - Cisero Murphy is featured on pages 38 and 39 -

Black Sports The Magazine Dec 05 - Jan 06

A few years ago there was an article written in an magazine called American Legacy - http://www.americanlegacymag.com/. I had quite a few phone calls with the author, but never got to see the article when it came out.

There is also another site that you can check out -

http://www.vanguarddocumentaries.com/projects.html

There is currently an ongoing project to document Cisero's mark in history in a documentary film. The information gathering process is long and tedious. The information from these articles will help the producers of this project immensely!

MRLucky7 [Phil] Thank you for your comment. I hope you read this one also

Other Billiard/Pool Players might be surprise the pound/amount of Billiard articles that are in both Ebony and Jet Magazine. A source that might need more reseach and we thought Sports Illusrtated was a great source.

great stuff. I saw Cicero play in 1971 in Vegas. I didn't know much about pool, but I was amazed at seeing someone run 88 balls. 30 years later I bought the accu stats video of him playing straight pool.

Thank you everyone for sharing this special information. It's good to see that Murphy did get some credit while he was alive. Any other sport and his name would be lofted up there with Jackie Robinson, Tiger Woods, Jesse Owens....

To further that point, we haven't resolved whether is name is correctly spelled Cicero or not. I seems fundamentally important that we spell a man's name correctly. The above magazines spell it Cicero, but that conflicts with the BCA's spelling of his name on the HoF (Cisero). I am tending to believe Jet & Ebony would get it right.

Also, thank you for the article on Gail Allums. I had no idea that the University of Iowa (my alma mater) sponsored a black woman at the ACUI. What a story...only 16 months of play and she finished 3rd! I forwarded that article to the U of I recreational activities director to see if they've showcased that at all. It's likely that story has been lost as time marched by. The U of I no longer has the game room where I learned to play roughy 15 years ago.
