Robot Gives Fast Eddie a Run for the Money

I'm not sure if this has been posted previously on the forum. When I did a search for "robot" on the AzBilliards search engine, thousands of posts came up. :grin-square:

A group of software engineers who work at Willows Garage, thanks to the generous support of the open source Robot Operating System (ROS), developed a system to teach its PR3 robot how to shoot pool.

They had to develop a special grip and bridge, so the robot could use its wrist to power the stick. Talk about a double fulcrum. :smile2:

Unlike projects from the past, this robot does not rely on overhead cameras to calculate moves. It can only shoot from where the cue ball lay, and it sights shots from the same vantage point as human player would.

While not perfect, the robot ain't too shabby. I wonder if the leagues would allow him on a team.

Check it out: Robot Playing Pool.

While we still continue to talk about finding the *perfect* rack, Queens University has invesnted a robot to rack the balls perfectly.

While still too expensive to have at pro events, it gives one food for thought. It does remind me of how bowling pins are racked. :)

The music is kind of creepy to me, suitable for Halloween, I guess. If you can get by that music, check it out: Queens University Automated Racker

Shane vs. Deep Green on TAR?

Scary...Robots don't tire, don't need breaks...but they don't have fun, either.

they are a long way off from that......plus if you remember Kasparovs match against deep blue was I tie I believe......and there are more calculations in pool

... and there are more calculations in pool
While the calculations are generally more complex, there are far fewer of them for pool. If you have a chance, try playing 14.1 against the machine in Virtual Pool. Virtual Pool does 3-D simulations and includes squirt, swerve and throw.
