I'm not sure if this has been posted previously on the forum. When I did a search for "robot" on the AzBilliards search engine, thousands of posts came up. :grin-square:
A group of software engineers who work at Willows Garage, thanks to the generous support of the open source Robot Operating System (ROS), developed a system to teach its PR3 robot how to shoot pool.
They had to develop a special grip and bridge, so the robot could use its wrist to power the stick. Talk about a double fulcrum. :smile2:
Unlike projects from the past, this robot does not rely on overhead cameras to calculate moves. It can only shoot from where the cue ball lay, and it sights shots from the same vantage point as human player would.
While not perfect, the robot ain't too shabby. I wonder if the leagues would allow him on a team.
Check it out: Robot Playing Pool.
