Out of the woodshed....into the Bullpen

Well, I just returned from 3 days with Mark Wilson at the Billiards Bullpen in Collinsville, IL (St. Louis area). Once again I was struck by the intensity of Mark's love for the game, his teaching expertise, the cleanliness and quality of the playing equipment, and the tremendous hospitality shown by him and his lovely wife Cathy.

A weekend lesson with Mark included 10 hours of pool a day - lessons interspersed with tournaments (my very first 10-ball "King of the Ring" ring game) and matching up with various patrons (or Mark himself). Zeeder once again drove in from Columbia for a couple of marathon straight pool games.

The lessons included refining the basics of my stance, routine, and stroke (this was my very first lesson with him where I did not need an adjustment in my stance and set up!!!!!); as well as straight pool strategy, kill shots, specialty shots, and mental game considerations. We also developed a 3 phase practice plan for the next few months. I was also treated to a host of stories regarding Mark's pool experiences, and his experiences with some of the greats of the game.

I am continually surprised by how many serious pool players avoid lessons. I have met quite a few AZB'ers who are serious about pool, and definitely to some degree "students of the game." For ALL such players, a weekend with Mark at the Bullpen is an experience of a lifetime. I think of these weekends more as a pool vacation than a "lesson", and I think anyone who is at all serious about the game is really missing out on a great opportunity to improve their performance and knowledge. POOL IS FUN. POOL PLAYED WELL IS WAY MORE FUN. I can't wait for my next visit to the Bullpen.

Here is a link to my post from last year's visit. The operating hours are a little different, and Sarah Rousey is no longer living there - otherwise the details are the same:

Mark is a good guy, I've been to his place. In fact he has put the last two tips on my cue. The reason I don't get lessons is simply the cost.

I'm glad you had a good time in St Louis.

I can’t think of any smart comments at the moment so I’ll just say it sounds like a really valuable experience. Hats off to getting recurring professional instruction and taking a structured approach to improving your game.

I think those men in the white coats slipped something special in my morning meds today.

Willie,

I enjoyed our couple of games. Here in a couple of months I won't even be able to compete with you, not that it's much of a competition anyhow...lol. See you in Peoria.

Man, I really wanted to come up there Friday night! However, that was the day that my wife and I got the news about the TWINS.

Mark is a great guy to converse with about anything billiards related, get playing instruction from and of course he and Kathy run a great billiard room.

Congrats on the continueing education!

Speaking of smart comments..... I can think of one that would go something along the lines of

...... taking __________ out back the woodshed (to the outdoor pool table) to give him a whooping.....

Willie, care to share some of those stories in Mark's behalf?

JPT,
Well, I'd rather not tell someone else's stories; but I can tell you he has spent significant time with some interesting characters like Sailor and Jerry Briesath; also spent significant time working on his own game with Efren in the Philippines; has given lessons to a fair number of interesting and prominent pro's; and has commentated on a lot of interesting matches. Take a lesson, the stories are a bonus.

Here's one of MY stories about Mark. He's talking about the traditional way that he tried to learn pool (losing to better and more secretive players), and said there were 2 ways to learn pool; the first is the "hard and expensive way". I interrupted and asked if the second way was the "smart and easy" way. He replied, "no, the second way is just "hard".

While some players balk at the cost of lessons; over a lifetime of competition I can't help but feel that lessons are the cheapest and best way to attain proficiency (but of course, NOT the only way) - certainly the quickest as well.

Sounds like an awesome experience! I wonder if you'd be willing to divulge how much the three 10-hour days of working with Mark set you back (not including transportation, food, or lodging)? If you don't want to post Mark's prices for him publicly, would you PM me? Thanks.

Andrew,
The lessons cost less than a break cue, less than a case, WAY less than a nice cue, less than 2 evenings of lap dances (in case breakup is interested), way less than a weekend in Florida. All in all a great vacation. I'll PM you.
