Recently, I talked to David Matlock and i asked him about some of the big money games he had in the past. The only time he was beat on the bar table was back in 1979 by Larry Hubbard. Later, David had a rematch with Larry and beat him the next time they played. To all of the non believers of David Matlock, this comes from the man himself; he is tired of people saying that so and so beat him. He takes alot of pride in his bar table play. He worked really hard to be the best ever on the bar table. He would like to be known as the best of bar table play and he wanted to set the record straight. Once again, only Larry Hubbard beat him for big cash, however, David soon beat him and Larry never wanted to play again. He virtually killed the big cue ball play and still is a force to be reckoned with.

Whats the problem with a guy setting the record straight? If you heard so and so beat you, and it wasn't true; wouldn't you want to respond? Do you think this forum is for just talking about how many cues you have? I don't see a problem at all with this topic, furthermore, you got the 8!

Getting all huffy and pissy because someone said you got beat playing pool 30 years ago is rediculous

I disagree, champion and even non-champion pool players carry themselves like modern day gunslingers or prize fighters for that matter, and when someone who didn't beat you and said they did, it makes most guys mad. Moreover, I don't blame him for being ticked. You have to remember guys like David are not career men, they don't fall back on a accounting degree or dad's farm, everything is about the game and they pride themselves on that.

There is no problem with a guy setting the record straight but this is not the guy! It is some other guy. Also, I am not that good at pool so can I have the 6-out?

Thanks,

I disagree Jake. Reason being and unfortunately so, more often than not the only thing pool players have left in the end is their legacy. No one would blink an eye if Cal Ripken were upset that someone claimed they had played more consecutive games than he had. Matlock has devoted the vast majority of his life to playing a game, a game we all love and respect, and if he wants to set the record straight, then I believe he has earned the right to do so.

Whoa whoa whoa, if Brady gets the 6-out I'm gonna need the ole' orange crush ( That damn Brady is winning tourneys left and right these days:wink: )

I suspect you are referring to Larry Hubbart, road partner of Mike Sigel back in the day.

The first and only time I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Matlock play was last weekend, courtesy of TAR. Of course it was a tourney, but I was impressed with his play, particularly the way he handled the cue ball. I can say based on first hand experience that it's hard to be dedicated enough to get in top stroke as you get older. Not only is it demanding physically, but it's hard to find the motivation. I watched Buddy play as well, and while you can still see the perfect position and the superb stroke, he dogged a couple of balls that he never would have missed back in the day. Kudos to anyone of a certain age who is trying. I have renewed respect for Billy Incardona lately, someone that I suspect has worked very hard to get in gear.

I wonder if Matlock ever played Keith for the cheese ? Since we're on the subject, I'd like to know who if anyone ever beat Keith for a large amount of money even on a bar box, especially with the big rock...Tom

Yes, David beat Keith in Fort Worth, TX. Keith has mentioned that he beat David as well but David said that Keith never beat him for the serious cash.

Ask Dave how he fared against the 3-cushion player from Nicaragua (who played briefly out of New Wave Billiards in Miami).

????????????

I saw Keith beat him for cash at the Maverick bar in Richmond Ky At one of the Clyde Childress tourneys. I don't know what a lot of money is but Matlock hit the rack after one set.

Sir, I have to ask you, what the Hell are you talking about? I used to love hearing how someone beat me for big $$$$, In fact I used to start those rumors MYSELF. Sure makes it easier to match up if someone thinks you got an ass whipping from a shortstop.;)

We played a couple times. I beat him, he beat me. Dave is a very good bar table player, one of the better ones that I ran across. We played 10-ahead both sets. He won one, and I won one.

This is a post from Keith a long time ago about Matlock. Took me 5 minutes to search it. I think it is safe to say that they were/are both great players on the bar box.

All I know is that I have been around pool for 20 years and in that time, I have heard of no one and have seen no one- that is no one - playing David even on the bar table. It is not like he is hiding or ducking anyone. If someone wants to play him, they know where to find him.

Sure, but you know as well as I, some played for the money and some for the roar of the crowd.

By the way Dick, Charlie Brown said to tell you Hello. I saw him last weekend in Louisiana. He said you tow go back a long ways.

I guess there is a relevance here somewhere.

David is one of the nicest guys in the game and a true gentleman. I can see how hearing a bunch of false tales and being asked questions about things that never happened could get real old. Nothing wrong with setting the record straight.

I would love to get Matlock in a TAR match so everyone could see how strong he still is on the box.

does he want to be know as one time best or the best?i think i can get him bar box action, not a TV player either.

Not if you are a true Champion who worked hard to be the best in the country. Recently there was another thread where it was claimed that Leil (J.R.) Gay broke Allen Hopkins.

Allen was in my booth at the BCA and he confronted Mike Janis who put that story on the net. Allen told Mike to retract it because they never played.

The top players are certainly sensitive to having the record be straight on who they matched up with and what the outcomes were. And they should be. These were the gunslingers who took a lot of pride in taking down other players.

David may not have the "official" World Championship titles but he does have the common designation of being the best big-ball barbox player ever. For anyone to say that they beat him at that when they didn't is not right, nor is it right to repeat such false stories.
