What Kind Of Wood Is This?

Aloha,

I am trying to figure out what kind of wood my Titlist is made of. One cue maker here in Hawaii thinks it may be padauk.

The pictures and light sometimes make it look more red in color, but in different light it is a bit more brown. The grain is very fine without a lot of variations.

Paduak, or purpleheart, would be my guess.

Could even be bloodwood, but I am not sure if any Titleist were ever made from bloodwood. JMO.

I've seen a fee, they oxidize brown like palm or wenge but brighten up hard when they are turned again.

I want this cue, lol

It is very nice. It would be a killer wrapless. :)

Looks alot like bloodwood.
Not sure how aged redheart looks like, but could that be a possibility?

I have seen redheart turn brown with age but never bloodwood. Does it really turn?
I have bloodwood I got 8 years ago and it's as it was after I turned it round not long after I got it. Very red.

edit- The Wood Database says yes, it turns brown. Interesting.

I was going to keep it wrapless, but I wanted something to use as a main player and I prefer wraps due to sweaty hands, especially when it is humid.

I was using a picture of an old original Balabuskha Titlist when I had this one done (see photo below). The only difference is the maker of course, and the butt has been turned down to a slimmer size. I also added silver rings in the collars..

Here are some before and after pictures.

I saw bloodwood in a Titleist once, but it wasn't very red. It was kinda pale red/brown, and didn't change any upon being cut. That said, I have never seen bloodwood turn color. It's always proven to be color fast, or else it takes so long to turn that I haven't lived long enough to see it. Bloodwood is one of those woods that range pretty broadly in color, but is easily identified by the odor. Has a sweet red rose smell to it that is unlike anything else.

Eric, I e-mailed you earlier this week about having a shaft made. It was for this cue.

Interesting.
So now I had to go turn a piece.

I had forgotten about that smell. Pretty hard to miss. Excellent.

You just broke my heart.

LOL!

There are a lot of people who want this cue. I get lots of offers to buy it from people in the pool hall, but it plays too good to sell and it would be hard to find another nice blank to make a new one (but I'm still looking for more blanks).

I'm sending the one in the link below to Ryan at RAT Cues to get refinished as soon as I can pack it up.

It isn't as elegant looking as this one, but it gets a lot of attention due to its big, gaudy butt sleeve and color. The butt sleeve reminds me of the tail lights on some of those 1950s cars.
