As of May 10th, 2008.

The Associated Tour System (ATS), through the Viking, Joss and Tiger tours are seeking a total of 6 billiard room locations to host our $20,000 added ATS events.

We are seeking qualified billiard rooms in the eastern US to host these events. All possible candidate rooms must meet the ATS' minimum guidelines per room regarding table specifications and player/spectator services including but not limited to the sales of food & beverage, spectator seating and proximaty to a host hotel.

The specific cost requirements for each location are a fee of $10,000 per event (+ accomdations for the tour directors) which the ATS will match towards the added monies in the event for a grand total of $20,000 added to the oatl purse + entry fees. The ATS will provide all the promotion and direction of the event along with pre-qualifying the players for the events.

Interested billiard rooms are instructed to call Mike Janis at 1-800-200-POOL to have your facility considered as a host location for the 2009 ATS US Pro Tour.

Please look for our full Press Release coming soon.

I'm ignorant on this, but how in the world is a room going to come up with $10,000 per event? Then, if they did, they would have to have an average of 120 people spending about $30 each of 3 days just to make back that $10,000.

During these events they would make no money from table time since they would all presumably be occupied in the tournament and unavailable for other customers. Then there's the wages for all the staff they have to consider.

I'm not intending to be negative, I'm just trying to see this from the increasingly endangered room owner's perspective. I've never understood how they make money even when they add $2k, let alone $10k.

I'm all for what you're doing, but on this issue, please enlighten me!

I kinda have to agree with you here. Pool rooms for the most part are struggling from what I've read. And like you I'm all for big money events happening anywhere and everywhere. But I work in one and it's not exactly the fountian of money. Hopefully some can come up with the money because those events would be something great to attend drawing players and crowds, but I don't see it happening as much as I hope it would.

I believe this can be accomplished but it will take some work. Rooms will
need to their part to raise funds. One sponsor doesn't have to foot the
full 10k.
Perhaps the room adds 5k and gets a beer or liquor company to buy a sponsorship package worth 1k-2k. Maybe a local business would be willing to sponsor or donate good to raffle with the finds going towards the event.

Another thought is to find 10 cuemakers to make cues that would easily sell or raffle for 1k each. They recieve some sort of advertisment but would ultimately be building their business as pool grows.

BD and Inside pool can sponsor.

It would be tougher to get many small sponsors but its attainable.

Could the top players be tied to do some exhibitions for local businesses
that are sponsoring. Maybe free entry for the players. Or the room offer a
party/exhibition with a top player or two as an incentive.

Any other ideas?

I would love to see this happen.

Much more than that. The room has product costs on its sales to cover...except for admission charges.

I'd guess it would require $3 of product sales...on average, to cover a dollar of cash outlays. Hard to say because the margins on food and alcohol are quite different.

But I think that Frankincali is right...that the way it's done is to get local co-sponsors.

I don't think there is anything new being proposed for a tournament with enough added money to attract a lot of top names.

Way different breed of cat than low prize money events for locals and roadies.

Jim

Gentlemen, you guys are killing me. LOL

We are doing six $20,000 added events and you cant even figure out how to make the first ten thousand. You guys are killing me. It's just too funny.

Anyway, right now we are not looking for ideas. We are just looking for billiard rooms that are large enough to hold the events with enough facilities to meet our minimum standards.

If you own/ manage one that you would like the ATS to consider please contact me at the above stated or through pm.

Thanks,

Mj

Edit- Sorry Mike, took too long to type. Wrong place wrong time but I worked on it for a half hour so please forgive me. lol)

It's late and I'm bored. That is the only thing qualifying me to comment on this. :D

$10,000 plus is a lot of money and obviously wouldn't be made back immediately on table time, food, and drinks, but maybe if there is a way to start drawing new fans to these events, there may be new promotional opportunities that currently aren't in place that could make it profitable in the long run for the room owners.

I have a couple small ideas for what it's worth, but again, I am not a room owner so these are just random ideas. I think whenever any video is made of a match, ie ProPoolVideo.com, or TAR there seems like there could be more advertising signage within the camera's view. They wouldn't have to be expensive. Take a picture or a photocopy and go to Kinko's and for $10 bucks, you can tape a sign on a wall. Staple it to a piece of cardboard and prop it up on a table that's not being played on in the backgound. Maybe removable decals can go on the top or side of the rails? It's not high tech, but it's better than nothing! lol

The reason I say this is there are so many great matches on video from these Viking Tour and TAR Events, but at the very least, the venues seem to be missing an easy opportunity to advertise. If any video or major event was held at a place I owned, I would have the name of my venue all over every square inch of the place so anyone taking a picture or video of the event couldn't help but have my business name (and location hopefully) in any picture or video taken, especially if anyone from the press comes by.

Maybe there's a way to get the name of the venue or the sponsors on the table lights or have table lights with changeable panels for advertising on them.

Anyway, it just seems right now, the few opportunities that are out there are being missed.

Thanks for reading! lol

Good luck and let's get some fans out to these things! :D

MAJOR sponsors handing you cash is probably the only way to make that kind of money.

Well Mike...there were only 4 posts above yours...one of which was mine and one of which was from the OP who ADMITTED he didn't know how it all works and was just curious.

I know from an earlier post that you are having a tough time right now and have some medical issues re: which you have my utmost sympathy...but maybe you ought to just take a time out from the forum until you get into a better mood because ridiculing people as clueless, one of whom was me... is not doing you any good IMHO.

Regarding my post...exactly what part of it caused you to roll on the floor with laughter??

The part where I stated that there was nothing new that you were proposing?

As Joe Pesci famously said...

" Do you tink I'm FUNNY? Do I AMUUUUUUUSE YOU?

(-;

Relax man. We are not the enemy.

I'm on an iPhone and it took me a while to type that post and I think you and I were typing at about the same time. You just hit the submit button first.

Well you won't be doing any $20,000 added events as described if they can't figure out how to make the first ten thousand as you put it, and if you can't be slightly less condescending in your replies to those that rightly think this sounds a little like a pipe dream.

This has about a 1% chance of working if I understand it correctly. Normally I would refrain from pointing out the negative (what I believe are) realities, but this seems so far out there and poorly thought out that it requires comment, and this is surprising coming from you. You want each participating pool room to contribute $10,000 cash, cover accomodations for the tournament directors, and provide the usage of their facilities and tables for several days?

I (and apparently others) do not see where any poolroom can possibly get $12,000+ value benefit (or even anywhere close) from an event like this to help offset the cost. They are not going to contribute those sums out of a sense of feeling charitable. Are there some benefits and value that you will be providing that have not yet been disclosed?

If you can get more than one or two rooms a years to do this I will be very impressed. I really hope I am wrong on this.

As you may or may not know, I have done many 20k - 25k events over the years and what we will be doing with the ATS is a proven system that works. We do not need luck, we just need interested rooms that are not afraid to make money or at the least break even on tournaments.

I know that you have a proven history of running good tournaments, with some of them having pretty decent payouts. I also know that you are asking for a very large sum of money here--much larger than is customary, and without any explanation of what benefits the room owner will receive in return that would be of comparable value.

How many times in your previous 20-25k events did the host room contribute $10,000 or more cash? If there were any, what percentage of those rooms took a sizeable loss?

Nobody is afraid to make money, and most are not afraid to break even. What they are afraid of is something that looks like a sure way to lose a lot of money, especially when the promoter will not offer any reasons or explanations to show otherwise.

Sorry I replied
Sorry the others questioned how it would work

If each tour has been successful and has had events around the east coast then finding pool rooms should be no problem. After all, you are saying that the rooms will make money.

I still hope that you have the events and I really hope the rooms find a way to make money without having to wait for a long period of time for a
return.
