From my memories of Red............

I wouldn't have called Red - A Hustler. I really liked Red and had many a great time in his company. His lovely wife (Dotty) did most of the matching up for Red when it came to gambling. She was actually better at matching up a close game. Of course these times I mention were after the Johnston City days and Red was pretty famous (and for good reason).
I remember Red telling me a lot of great hustler stories but they were pre- Johnston City days so that was before my time.
While having lunch with Red and Eddie Taylor (in Shreveport) they were both telling great stories of matches that took place in the 40's & 50's.
I LOVED IT!

Jay was a Hellava...........

Many have said he had the smoothes stroke of all but I'd like to know more, much more if possible. Thank you.

I was around Jay about 5 or 6 times in various states & tourneys. Played awesome and knew how to gamble.
He was at a big tourney here in St. Louis (way back when) at a big union hall. He came up to me and told me he had played this fellow cheap about three times before (in the past) but his backer was never around so he had lost once and broken even twice.
Well the backer was there now and Jay told me to LOAD UP THE RAIL. They were playing one pocket 5 ahead for $2K. I ended up with a little over $3K on the rail and Jay won in less than 3 hours.
I told Jay what I had bet and tried to give him half. He refused and said he only wanted 20%. He said he remembered the score I had put him on in Detroit a few years earlier when he was broke and I staked him. I knew he had the NUTS so I refused to take anything.
What a Player & Gentleman!

Once Upon A Time..............

I was playing (hustling) bar pool in an Indiana small town, USA. I was only playing $10 9-Ball with a local. In other words - I had the Nuts.
I noticed a couple of farmers in coveralls sitting at a near by table and after each game they were paying each other with large stacks of C-Notes. As soon as I figured out which one was betting on me - I asked him if I could have a word with him in the men’s room. I explained who I was and what I did for a living and asked him what % he might give me if I won a considerable amount of games.
He got pissed off and said I had a lot of nerve asking for something at all. This was his friend and they bet each other all the time, and what he bet was none of my business.
I said "No Problem - Have a good day"!
I went back playing and as luck would have it - I lost the next 7 games in a row.
My farmer buddy asked me to come back to the men’s room.
He asked if 33.3% would be enough.
I said "No Problem - AND - I'm sure you will have a good day, NOW"!
The most difficult problem was having to keep turning down my opponent’s request to raise the bet.
The last thing I wanted was for him to Run Out Of Cash.
Bottom Line - I won $260 from my opponent & $8,600 from the RAIL-BETS.
My Farmer Buddy & his buddy quit betting One Game prior to my opponent running out of bullets.
I later heard that that was one of the best years ever for the farmer’s crops all across the USA.
The moral of this story is - "What Goes Around - Comes Around"!

Another Analogy!

When young - we feel invincible - therefore, we are full of confidence.
As we age we become more & more cynical and lose not only some of our confidence but also some of our concentration, which affects our ability to be consistent.

I have always preached the three C's as bring what it takes to be a top-notch player.
- Concentration
- Confidence
- Consistency

When these three elements are present - We Are "In-Stroke"!

Another way to look at this is -
The younger players are looking for reasons to win.
The older players are looking for reasons Not To Lose.

THE SOLUTION IS TO - "SHOW HER THE CA$H"!

My wonderful wife of 25 years could care less about pool.
We met about 6 years after she left a catholic convent.
At that time I had kind of quit pool for playing Gin for Hi$.
She understood what I was all about and it didn't matter to her.
It sure did to her parents - UNTIL - they saw the fruits of my labor.
I told her that I was really all about pool and that at any time I might go to the store for a loaf of bread and call three days later from Vegas. She said Listen, As long as your faithful and continue to bring home the kind of ca$h that you do now - No Problem!
Everything changed though, when after being married for 5 years, she says "I'm Pregnant".
I took a job selling advertising "On The Road" and it turned out to be the "Best Hustle" for pool that I have ever seen.
About 4 years later I had a random idea in the middle of the night about a new advertising product and developed my corporation.
I still love to play pool and do, but now she goes with me quite a bit to socialize with the other women there - Not to watch me.
Not to be bragging BUT the other night while I was in a game and she was sitting with a bunch of other people watching the game intently - someone asked her why she wasn't paying ANY attention to the game. She said - "Why should I? We have been together for over 25 years and I know that he's going to win. If he doesn’t, It because he doesn’t want to".
We had a little talk later on about this statement she made.

Bottom Line - Show Them The Ca$h & you'll be surprised how much they will support your endeavors.

Good job Wilson, great bit of research.

Really good stories there, really good posts too. I wish I had the chance to meet him and get to know him, seems like the kinda guy that other guys like to be around. The kinda guy that other guys want to be like. A wealth of knowledge and information. This really is a tragic loss for his family and this community. :(

Oh my gosh, I remember that! LOL I laughed out loud then and I just laughed out loud again. Do you remember who he was talking to? IIRC it was someone that was a jerk so that made the post even funnier. Thanks for the laugh, I needed it. Reading all these posts and remembering back... it definitely gets to ya... :(

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Back in my playing days when I would get into a real slump, I would pack up and hit the road. I would go down to S. Missouri and play the bars. I would play anyone for anything. $2, $3 or $5 a game with complete suckers/novices. No hustles, just BBQ anyone that got up. This would build back my confidence, which I believe is the cornerstone of the 3 C's. Confidence, Concentration & Consistency.
My Balabushka.............
It was made in 1960. It was one of only three that George made like it and later was copied a lot by Paradise. It is shown in the blue book and it is the one with the clear bottom sleeve with 2 silver rings inside. I know (for a fact) that the other two were bought (or played with) by Junior Goff in Ala & Fez in NM.
I spoke to George many times and had two other cues of his. One was a plain rosewood butt. It broke just under the joint in Okla City and the poolroom owner bought it from me for $500. I thought he was nuts but I didn't know George had died two weeks before.
Many years ago, I sent the cue to Danny Janes to have him refinish it and he told me I was nuts. He said, "Don't ever refinish or re-wrap this cue, just leave it the way it is, original".
John Wright has authenticated my Balabushka and he even made me leave the room as he made a secret mark up inside the cue that his records can identify. Between George & Gus, I have about 12 other shafts (some broken) for this cue. I have the original mailing tube w/ label.
To this day, I could take it out of the safety deposit box and it plays as great as it ever has. Buddy still says it is the sweetest cue he has ever hit a ball with.
Believe it or not - I have a standing offer from a dentist in Dallas for $23K.
TY & GL
Ps - IMO, There weren't near as many Balabushka's made as many think. When he started getting too many orders, he cut back and refused to cut corners. Some St. Louis friends of mine waited close to 2 years to get theirs and that was unheard of back then.
