I have been wondering why people really use the ignore feature. Most members who claim to use the ignore feature do so out of what appears to be petty differences with other members. However, when that member makes a comment that they don't agree with or that they feel is possibly directed at them they drop the ignore feature and post a comment to the member they claim they wish to ignore!!!:thumbup:

Now this behavior seems kinda creepy to me and it is difficult for me to understand this behavior, because I thought the purpose of the ignore feature was to ignore that member. Now I suspect that it may be a total lack of confidence, a crazy desire to prove they are right, or a more childish desire to not let that ignored person get one up on them. Either way it is very very entertaining and I hope the individuals in question never stop their obsessive behavior because no matter what has gone wrong on that day they are always good for laugh even if they don't understand that they are funny!!!!:D

Thanks for listening and please vote on the pool.:)

I've never used one on any of the forums I frequent...never really had the need for it... I don't let people get under my skin enough to bother with it really...and if I don't agree with them, or like their disposition...I can ignore them regardless of whether I want the computer to do it for me or not...
Just MHO...

The purpose of the ignore feature is to not have to see posts by annoying people. The PROBLEM is that Vbulletin kind of does a half ignore.

When a person posts that is on your ignore list then you see a note that tells you you can't see their post because they are on your ignore list and a button that allows you to take them off. So it's very tempting and easy to take someone off the ignore list to see what they said.

Also you continue to see their comments whenever someone quotes them.

So it's a half-assed feature really.

HOWEVER - FireFox ROCKS! Because Firefox allows for add-ons to be installed some great person wrote this great add on that makes people and threads completely disappear.

This is the greatest tool ever for putting people, threads, avatars and signatures on ignore. For example the OP in this thread is completely invisible when I use Firefox. It's as if he does not exist - HEAVEN!!!!

Occasionally there is a poster that bugs me a little, but I find that I can ignore them by using that little scroll wheel on my mouse and moving further down the page.

I usually find the more annoying posters usually end up generating more amusement as they end up getting bar-b-qd, or at least get into a fight with another poster, and that can often become quite humorous. I've seen folks go off on Coco so many times that I wait to see what will happen next. Same with you, JB. And many others. I would never want to miss out on any of that stuff. (No offense to either Coco or JB, as they don't bother me in the least. They just seem to get that reaction from others here... ahem ... occasionally. :p)

And the scroll wheel still works in the event that becomes tedious. The back button does, too. Or the link back to the Main Forum.

crazy folks

I started using an ipod to ignore crazy people on the bus to school and now everyone thinks I'm a crazy person because I haven't learned the dancing ipod etiquette. as far as ignore on azbilliards, that seems slightly petty and unnecessary, you can escape them by leaving the computer for a while! lol ...speaking of....when WAS the last time I left this computer chair....hmmm

I've had between 5-10 people on my ignore list from time to time, but then "un-ignored" them after a few weeks/months

I only have CocoboloCowboy on ignore right now.

I like the feature

I ignore the ignore feature too. If a particular poster has nothing to offer in any given thread, I simply scroll on by. Life's too short to get all warped by a freakin poster. It amazes me that some people can get so twisted and up in arms with others in this forum. Get a growth!

I voted the third option in the poll, entitled merely "I". After all, there is only "I" -- the most important person of all. The solar system revolves around "I". (Now there's some faux self-centering for ya! :p )

And the old saying goes, "you have to look out for number 1" (but as Rodney Dangerfield adds, "...but don't step in number 2!"). :D

All funnin' aside, I have a built-in "Ignore" that life experience (44 years of it as of this writing), ex-military experience (7 years USN, 4 of which were in tight quarters on a ship with fellow shipmates) have taught me to use well. Although I've let my "Ignore" guard get pulled down on a few unfortunate occasions here by people that possess neither maturity or self-control, in general life's too short to get into flame-throwing disputes on what, a freaking pool forum?!?

Mature spirited banter is good -- it's interesting, gets your blood and those creative juices flowing. But when the other person "loses it," the idea here is to possess the self-control (and exercise it!) to just let things roll off your back. This is maturity displayed to its finest degree -- i.e. to use your self-control to let the other person display to the world just how immature they are. Let *them* do the work for you!

I use ignore liberally. There are several posters on here that don't know I have them on ignore, which is great. The reasoning behind it is incredibly simple. I don't want to read what they have to say the majority of the time. If someone I have ignored posts in a topic I find very interesting, I might click "View post" depending on which person it is. Some people on my ignore list are quite smart, so those are the posts I don't mind viewing (if it's a topic I find interesting). Most people on my ignore list are complete idiots though, so it's pretty rare that I'll view a post from someone on my list.

I just checked my ignore list and there were 7 names on the list. I decided to give them all a second chance and cleared the list, at least for now.

One of the posters that was on the list had a bad, imho, habit of posting huge pics that forced me to side scroll, another posted using ALL CAPS, at least one is now banned and the others I'm not sure why they were on the list.

So for today the list is clear.

Steve

I do not ignor anyone, by block their posts. As you just never know when you are going to miss something good.

Thanks a ton for that link to the plug-in, I'll check into that.

As posters above have mentioned, vBulletin doesn't really implement the IGNORE feature very well. I have used it once in the past on one user on another forum, but I removed him from my ignore list after a few months.

It has great usefulness to allow you to block posters that are always a waste of space, are argumentative, or always post large pictures. I put a user on ignore once because he always posted pictures that weren't Work Safe. Putting him on ignore minimized the photos that showed up from him on the screen, except for the ones that people "quoted".

Anyhow, the internet unfortunately allows some folks to act as the would not if they were in person. Ignore is a nice feature for those that have thin skins or low tolerance, or perhaps, just wand a more efficient browsing experience.

Thanks again for the link, I'll check it out and perhaps use that function and make ignore more useful on vBulletin sites.

I don't ignore - when you join a forum you have to expect others will have a different opinion / view from your opinions - besides there are some people that you you just have to respond to - lol

Respecting a different opinion is irrelevant. I ignore people because they've either proven themselves incapable of rational conversation, they're far too politically correct, or they spam like cocobolocowboy. Oh, I also ignored someone a long time ago because I was tired of them posting 3-4 times in a row in topics they deemed popular enough for their presence. I also couldn't stand their crying, saying they're leaving the forums forever, and then coming back the next day or week. That pretty much covers who I ignore.

I don't use the ignore button. I am interested in what folks have to say. I may disagree with the poster or their opinion, but that's just the way life is. Because they might contradict me, doesn't make them wrong or bad, they just shoot a different direction than me.

For the most part A-Z is a great place.

I would like to se a technical arena, this personality area is pot-pourri

You've hit the nail on the head, Sean. A discussion forum is meant for discussion, and discussions would be nothing at all without people voicing their personal opinions; and any time personal opinions are voiced, there will be disagreements. Now if you're one of those who just can't deal with someone disagreeing with your opinions, then you should either stay out of the discussions, or else employ your "manual" (inner self) ignore feature.

Diagreeing with opinons is fine. Being an asshole is not. I like the ability to erase people from my personal online experience. I also avoid poison ivy when I see it and remove it from my yard when I can.

It's really easy for people to say that others should just have self-control. But if you were in the pool room and someone kept bothering you then what would you do?

To me it's not a question of being able to handle disagreement. That's one aspect only.

It's the ability to erase annoyances. People who just make it a habit of rubbing you the wrong way, who delight in trolling you and puching your buttons. The internet is great in that it gives you some buttons to push to erase them from your virtual existence.

I am supremely annoying to some people. Erase me. Put me on super ignore and never see another rant about cue cases, CTE, English or whatever.

Choice is awesome and I might vote for this extension as add-on of the year!
