Last night, we were at our friend's bar. This guy named Mike who was in a wheelchair was there. His is able to briefly get out of his chair to stand for a shot or two at the table. He has been going around to different pool halls and bars in the Chicago vicinity. There have been numerous stories of him stiffing people he has played. Last night, he got into a "cheap" money game. He got shut out the first 2 sets, won only one game in the 3rd set, and then got a 2 game spot in the 4th set (which he won by luck). He left the bar twice to go to the ATM, but the guy he was playing went with him. The winner got paid for the first 3 sets. He won back some of his money in the 4th set. Well...he wanted to play a 5th set, so they did. He was asking everyone to side bet and trying to get the stakes high, but no one wanted to bet him. He was down 6-2 in a race to 7 in the last set they were playing. Right before his opponent was about to break the possible winning game, he gave an excuse that he needed help for medical problems and asked the guy to step outside. They went over to Mike's car, Mike got in and pretended as if he needed to use a device to go to the bathroom. He threw the car in reverse, peeled out of the parking lot, and slammed the door shut as he was already driving away. Not only has this guy been stiffing people, he becomes "Mr. Nasty" and swears and belittles his opponents. He claims he is part of the National Wheelchair Poolplayers event. He will give you a song and dance about how he will get kicked out of it if he doesn't pay up on his debts. The way he tore out of the parking lot was like watching something out of a movie. He constantly tells you how lucky you are getting, how you suck at this game, he is drunk and you're sober; that's why he isn't winning, says he is out of stroke...the same old song and dance from someone who is losing. If you run into this player, make sure he posts up (which he will say he finds offensive) because he will be sure to ditch out on you too. One of our friends remembered him from when he played Mike about 8 years ago. He was stiffing people back then too.

I'm sure he will get what's coming to him soon. Karma's a mother fu@#$r!
Always post with people you don't know, and even with some that you do know.

I know exactly who you're talking about. He goes to many pool halls all around Chicagoland and has stiffed several people that I know of. He actually can stand and lean against the table for some shots, but for the most part stays in his chair.

He stiffed a couple of people that I know at the Green Room in Downers Grove and also at Pyramid Club in Addison.

If you went to the Windy City Open, you also might have seen him gambling with Joe Durham on the bar boxes.

Hi Cuebacca,
Are you saying there is another guy who pulls this stunt too, but he actually walks out? This guy really does need his chair. He can lean against the table, but it is not like he can stand on his own. He has an incredible vocabulary full of cuss words. I heard another story about him when he was at Quentin Corner...trying to pull the same nonsense.

Hey Susie, I guess I misunderstood. When you said he got into his car, I had pictured that the wheelchair was still outside and that he left it behind. I haven't had any experience with this or similar type of guy, but when I read your post it reminded me of that other thread from last month.

Take a look at it, as it could be the same guy. Sounds very similar and it also took place in Illinois (Champaign). Maybe it could be that this Mike guy is just faking his disability as part of his hustle. In any case, sorry to hear that your friends got stiffed.

I know the guy you're talking about. He seems nice enough, and is a good player on a bar box, but he does become an obnixious SOB when he's losing. I've seen him pay up, but I don't doubt your story.

The funniest thing is, at the end of last year, he told me that he was giving up pool entirely. I asked him why and he said that he didn't have time with all of the other things going on in his life. Well, Mike doesn't have a job, so I asked what he had going on, and he replied "Bible study."
No kidding. :D

BTW, he goes by Wheelchair Mike, or Wheels.

It's probably the same guy. I don't think the Champaign stiffer was able to walk out on his legs either. I clarified the story with another friend of mine and he said that "Wheels" never left the wheelchair behind. He just disappeared, wheelchair and all.

Same guy has shot many air bullets in Rockford. Pays a little and skips out in the end. The style and excuses are all the same. Gamblers need to learn to "post up".

Yes, it was certainly the same guy. I was there in Champaign when he played, lost and didn't pay. He put a lot of effort into the BS story about why he couldn't pay, and he did act easily offended by the suggestion that he might not make good, as well as threatening to sue the bar becuase he felt "unsafe" there. I'm sorry I missed the other thread and didn't correct Shaggy's misimpression that Mike walked out. He rolled out.

He really came close to getting what he deserves here, but I talked the guy that beat him out of hurting him because it would be very hard to beat an assult charge when the assult is on a guy in a chair.

I wish that I had thought to get a picture of him before he split. I would happily post it here with a warning not to play the SOB (or at least to make him post up). I wouldn't normally knock someone's action like that, but a guy with a history of not paying when he loses doesn't deserve our protection.

I know that whenever anyone on here tells a story about getting stiffed, fifteen people will tell him that he's a fool for not posting the money first. However, in practice I only see this done when the bet is at least three figures. Much more common is to pay after each set, which is what happened here, except that Mike didn't, so there was no second set.

I know this guy . he has been coming to the bars in the aurora,il area for at least 20 years doing the same thing.

Duane,
You couldn't be more right. In this instance, "Wheels" was paying in the beginning. He did go to the ATM to get more money. So the guys knew how much he had in his pocket. He paid the first guy he played when he lost. At first he paid the 2nd guy he played. In fact he paid the first 3 sets. He got lucky and won the 4th set, and the 5th set is when he booked.
He claimed he was going to go to the tournament at Chris's. If he does, I'm sure there will be a long list of people trying to collect some money from him there.

Are you and the guys from Rockford going to the 8 ball tournament at Chris's on Sat Aug 4th?

Take care, and I hope you are doing well,
Susie

I knew this guy would show up here eventually. Thanks Longhair for clarifying, I got the story from joe after a few drinks between bars, and then posted the next day so I was preatty fuzzy myself.

And yes I feel that posting up for a $20 set is kind of ridiculous.

The guy is a complete jerk. Plays the "wheelchair" card whenever something doesn't go his way. Says stupid shit like "if I weren't in this chair" blah, blah, blah. Fill in the blank. I don't know how "handicapped" he is, but he is definitely giving all those in a wheelchair a bad name.

Hey dogginda9,

Has Mike ever tried to play you? He claims that he is in a different league than all of his opponents. He cries constantly about how lucky everyone is that he plays. He will also claim that he is drunk and if he were sober then he would be unbeatable. Not only does this guy give wheelchair players a bad name, he give pool players a bad name.

Hopefully this post will stop this guy from pulling anymore stunts.

Is that for real???

Does he do any butterfly knife tricks by chance?

Is that something this guy really has done in the past? I did NOT see any weapons on him at all. The only thing violent about him was his abusive language. I have heard some fouled mouth guys before, but he has got to be at the top of the list.

Our friend DawgAndy was refering to a now-banned former AZ member who also plays from a wheelchair, but he lives in Florida. It's good to be cautious anyway  :D
