Aiming Section

This is my offering towards an aiming section or aiming discussion here on az. It's almost the entire first half of my aiming workout that would call for you to make a certain amount of these shots from both sides of the table while recording your misses before moving on to the next group of shots. Here we can just use them as reference shots to discuss and hopefully enlighten.

The files should be read in the following order;
0-0 Intro
1B
2A, B, C
3A, B & 4A, B
4 & a half

This is awesome Joe and I hope we can get a good dialogue going. I'm hoping to learn a little bit about the differences.
Thanks for starting us off.

Joe T,
Thanks for the contribution. Though I generally avoid aiming threads like the plague, I wanted to tell you that a very well known instructor has spoken very highly of your aiming system. He recommends it for players of all levels all the way up to and including the professional level. I think it is obvious that even "feel" players can benefit from a system if for no other reason than to help give a feeling of security when confronted with those tricky "optical illusion" type shots. Well, I've got to head down to my table and try out some of this info.

I checked it and there sure was something there. This guy is what we're looking for, A person that teaches players how to aim, where, when and why and then teaches them how to recall it faster and easier by teaching them to take the proper steps while learning it right the first time.

I think he may have made me a better teacher and a better player in just a few short pages.

Thanks Cane, now the rest of you will just have to sweat it out!

Nice To See You In Orlando, Joe

Joe,
It was nice to finally meet you last month in Orlando. You had been kind enough a year or so ago to send me, with just a phone call ,one of your books, "Racking Secrets" for my friend, Sarah Ellerby (wpba touring pro).
She was delighted with the book.
The time you spent with me practicing in your booth at the tournament was impressionable for me. I found you to have searched out from Hal Houle(my friend and mentor) along with several others and tried to combine their theories on aiming into one nice system of teaching aiming.
after spending several hours with you, i believe that in fact you have hit on it all.
What you have created in your numbering system on the pracice balls, shows Hal's angle theories to a large degree.
i believe should he see this in action he would agree, but i have learned from many years of knowing HAL to not try to speak for him.
Your method of teaching this system is not his, but nevertheless, your method teaches the same thing , only in a different outlook, which , we all know there is only 1 contact point , but many ways to see it.
i was much appreciative with the time you spent with me in analyzing the way you teach aiming .
I look forward to seeing you again and spending more time.
The little pitchfork stroketrainer is probably one of the simplest, but effective tools i have seen out on the market, and i myself have straightened out a few issues by using it, as you saw in Orlando. thank-you
i will be at the BCA 9 ball nationals Oct24-30 in Las Vegas. Will i see you there?

Hey Linda,
It was GREAT to meet you Fl, I’m a total sucker for a true student of the game. You could have kept me there talking for 24 hrs. It’s also great to see you here. You may now be one of the few qualified people in the pool world that have used AND mixed these 2 methods.

I know the methods can be effectively mixed; I’ve done it on a few shots. I like to improve a players’ perception of the front of the cue ball by numbering it and Hal likes to teach people to aim with the part of the cue ball that faces the shooter and that is easier for some players.

I think we would all be better off knowing both and then some. That’s why I decided to try and start this aiming section.

This shot here is also from my Aiming Workout and is a good example of how a Houligan could use my method to identify the shot more precisely and then aim with the shooters side of the cue ball.

This is a #5 because it’s on the 5 aiming line, a player wanting to shoot with the shooters side of the cue ball could look at the cp of the object ball (5), draw the line back to the (5) on their cue ball using my method and then extend the line thru the cue ball to their side and aim that spot to the object balls cp or see how close it is to a center to edge or edge to edge or one of Hals other methods. I did it and kind of liked it! It seemed to give me a little more confidence and somehow a more solid feel to the shot. And knowing the 5 cps the player will also know the tangent line which will help improve their position play.

Joe...just out of curiosity, how old are you and how long have you been at the game?
I think it was 1987 when I accidently walked into a pool room when they were having a monthly "B" tournament and somehow I got amazed at how these players were moving their cue ball around. I immediatelt inquired about lessons, bought a table and in 91 I won my first state championship (small state). For the next 5 years I let myself develop poor pool player habits, hustling, drinking, sleeping late and really didn't improve or get back to the real game until 96 where I played in my first pro event. Since then I tell everyone to practice twice as much as you can while you can because life throws many things at you that will not allow you practice when it's needed. Since 99 I've been a mom, a dad (twice), player, teacher, director, promoter, author, inventer and now forum junkie. I am just old enough to look back and see what was stupid and what wasn't but young enough to still make stupid mistakes.

Yeah, but I bet you wont be making the expensive sex change reversal mistake again.

I was hoping to get enlightened in this thread. There had been a lot of threads on aiming. bump.

Joe,

I holed up with you for 3 days learning stuff. You didn't look like a "mom" to me! :D

Now, do I have to go through this stuff with you again or what?
