Embossed GTF 2x4

JB Cases

Here is a study in embossing. Embossing in leather work is when you use stamps and a press to make the impressions. For this one we did a celtic knot stamp in acrylic using the laser and stamped it more than 48 times using the die press.

We found that embossing, especially at this level, is not as easy as one might think. When you see a case that has embossed leather on it then it's usually referring to leather that was done with a large plate on a large press or run through really big rollers to impress the design on the leather making it like fabric.

This case was done more like a hand tooled case in that the stamps are 50cm squares and we placed each one carefully - one screw up and the leather piece would be ruined. Not good when you are making a 5 ton press do the impressions and you have to place the stamp 48 times perfectly. So the embossing is carefully arranged. For this one we deliberately left the seam area unstamped to show off that it was not done on a large plate.

Anyway, enough chatter, this was a custom job we did for GTF cases and I am very proud of how it turned out.

It's funny you say that because the staff referred to it as the LV case and when I asked what that meant they said it reminded them of Louis Vuitton.

I didn't really want to give this case up. I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out and when it was done I was thinking that this is one I would like to carry.

I love that case man..

That's a great case. It seems the possibilities are endless since you can make your own stamps using the laser. Do you want to sell some stamps?

For you certainly. But honestly there are a few folks on the LW board who do laser engraved embossing stamps/plates and it's not much money for them. I think you'd be better off dealing with them for a couple reasons, time and distance being two of them. The other one is that we are still learning. To do the stamps for this case we did about 10-15 versions before we got it right.

The possibilities are endless. We actually did some pretty cool cases prior to this one using much larger plates. I can't show you the cases here because they were samples for a client who doens't wan them advertised before he gets to. But we did some pretty sporty neat stuff - not as complex as this one but very nice nonetheless. Send me your email to my email jb@jbideas.com and I will send you a picture of one of the main ones that you will appreciate. I don't want to do it through PMs.

With the embossing you can get a certain look that is hard to achieve with hand tooling - we also played with some embossing that is then hand tooled on top of it and those experiments looked pretty cool.

I really like the laser engraving, cant wait to see more of this stuff.

Thanks. Just a small correction. This is not laser engraved. We used the laser to make the plates (stamps) and then used the die press to emboss the leather.

If anyone remembers the Erofey cases then you can see what embossing is like on most of his cases. Most of the decoration was embossed in the same way we did here by using stamps and a large press.

Talisman also uses this technique for some of their cases. It's very common in production goods and not usually done in one-off type goods due to the time to make the stamps.

But, we have a laser and the ability to make stamps relatively quickly - that is when we gain more experience at it. Right now it takes a good day to get the stamp right - although a month ago it took a week. :-)

Sorry I'm late- I only just saw this

I was trolling around this morning and just found this. I can't rep you again (too soon, apparently), but WOW.

Absolutely. Freaking. Beautiful.

is it possible to make a gtf style case with individual tubes on the inside? This would be the ultimate IMO.

This really did turn out awesome, John. Like everything about it - including the double strap & the unstamped seam. I bet this has your mind moving in a lot of directions.
