Professional pool is fairly new to the region. The region is one of WPA "projects."

EDIT: Darn, I was totally off-topic. above.

I've been to quite a few mainly black bars, and I've never seen a single pool table.

Melvin "Strawberry" Brooks, who recently passed away. Cecil Tugwell was a great money player, and played at the pro level from what I was told. Javanely "Youngblood" Washington, Bugs Rucker, and I think Cannonball. I'm sure Freddy or Grady can tell us much more.

I was one three white kids that went to an all black school. After school we'd all go to the youth center where there were two pool tables. Most of the black kids weren't interested in pool. They were more into basketball, boxing, and cards. I think the reason you don't see many of them in pro tournaments is because not many of them are interested in pool. Just like if there were more women players we would see more in mens tournaments the same goes for black pool players. Johnnyt

Gabby from Houston who played I believe in the 70' , 80's and 90's sure did play top notch pool. Real smooth stroke.

i have seen alot of strong black players over the years, not champions but gladiators, at one hole and banks. I wish there were more, they are great althletes and would bring a whole lot of new faces to the game and that would be great, I have never seen racism in any pool hall in California, that isnt the issue I dont know what it is. I hope we swee more of them in the near future.

norris BRADY from charlotte/greensboro plays at a good speed especially 1 hole . not a champion but a real solid shortstop

my pool shootin' buddy is a 73 yr old black man.
we were talking the other nite about if there were any black cuemakers?? anybody know???

Historically speaking, Before the 1960's blacks were not allowed into many pool hall's where top white players played. It was like baseball. There were many great baseball players who played in the negroe leagues, but before 1947 were not allowed in Major League baseball. I would not be surprised to find out that there were many great black pool players who found it difficult or impossible to compete against the Mosconi's, Greenleaf's, or Cranefields.
