Fiber pads and ivory ferrules

Does anyone like to use fiber pads with ivory ferrules? I have heard pros and cons from builders and was curious about what others thought. I hate the hit personally. Looking for any insight. I know that they are meant to protect the ferrules, but I feel it gives a dead hit.

The pads are simply needed to protect the ivory...unless you don't mind taking a bit of an expensive chance. That being said...you can get by without them as long as you don't play your tips down too low & are rough on the cue. You are still taking a chance though. I don't use ivory...too many quality man made materials that are elephant friendly & need no stinkin' pad.

I have always used them with Ivory ferrules. I personally have Ivory on my playing cue & even break with it, with no problem. As Kevin mentioned, I never let my tips get too low, where the tip isn't giving enough cusion...JER

> I go in the opposite direction,I use ivory ferrules without the pad. For me,it's a feel thing. I've never had one crack, even when breaking in friendly games with it. I still have the 2 original shafts for my 18 yr old Schon, and neither of them has cracked yet.

Maybe it's just me,but ivory gets cracked (or worse) more often by weather changes than actual use. Tommy

A few years ago when I had some shafts ordered from Runde, he said he didn't use them do to the fact that they don't expand and contract the same way ivory and leather do with humidity changes. I think it makes a cue hit weird. My friend breaks all the time with his and he has never had one crack. Where they created to dampen the shock to the ivory? It just seems as though they would have an insulating factor that would not give you a true feel of the hit of the cue.

I use pads in non Ivory. I love the hit. I'm sure re pads are harder then you playing tip. I also will not do an ivory ferrule without a pad. No exceptions.

The pads don't really affect the hit ... They do save the ferrel as you sand the pad instead ... A pad is usually good for 5 to 7 tips depending on the installer ... I put them on corian ferrels also , same feel as ivory but no cracking or staining and resistant to temp and humidity ...

It only takes one break or miscue during a break to shatter one. It doesn't matter to me I always recommend the use of a pad, however, I will not guaranty an Ivory Ferrule that doesn't have one on it.

Just my thoughts!!!!
