Tip Pads... Are they all the same, or are there better ones? I hear they have carbon fiber ones also...

I have ivory ferrules on my cue, are these pads really necessary?

Yes indeed, all tip pads are exactly identical down to the molecular level.
But inexplicably, they somehow cause Blue Diamond chalk to wear
a ring around the center of your ferrule.

McChen's post explains it very well! Regarding both our Carbon Fiber Pad, and the typical vulcanized paper pad used in other applications.

As far as I know, we are the only ones using Carbon Fiber for our pads. We chose it for it's strength to weight ratio. It provides the tensile strength we need while it's specific gravity is very close to that of the cue tip itself.

Yes, I think you should definitely use one on your Ivory ferrule. When tips mushroom the bottom of the tip wants to spread apart. Since Ivory has a grain kind of like wood has it can spread the ferrule along with it and crack it. The pad stops that from happening. A pad is no guarantee your ferrules won't crack, but it certainly helps.

i've seen many ivory ferrules with no pad and they've held up fine. i don't really know what the rate of breakage is with ivory ferrules with pad or no pad. i guess it is a good insurance policy to use the pad, but it would be interesting to get some data on how much it is really needed.

besides the OB shafts, the only other shaft i've seen use the carbon fiber pads is the BK2. interestingly, the new tiger LD shafts, which also use a balsa wood core and i believe an open uncapped ferrule, only uses a fiber pad on the end of theirs.

royce at ob1 was nice enough to sell me a few carbon fiber pads and i am very happy with the results. i believe that the carbon fiber is so much superior to the fiber pads that i am going to use them on all my no ferrule shafts and all my ivory ferrules.
