I remeber reading in either someplace that a jump cue has to be 45" to be legal. Is this correct? If so does that rule apply to a jump break cue?
Or are there that many illegal length cues out there? Along the same lines is 25 OZ the max weight a cue can be to be legal.
Played a guy in league last night and his jumper was short like 40" didn't bother me much because he shanked it but it made me think.
Golf has a bunch of illegal clubs that that are pretty well known when you buy a club if it is illegal. Is there a ruling body who has the say so as to what is legal in the world of pool?

At one time (and I think it is still correct) the BCA requirement was for the length to be at least 40 inches long.

It also required the tip to be made of leather and nobody pays attention to that any more.

Good Cuemaking,

This is from the World Pool and Billiard Association. They set the rules that the majority of tournaments use.

17. Cue Sticks
Cue Sticks used at WPA competitions should comply with the following
during play at table:

Length of Cue: 40 inches [1.016 m] minimum / No Maximum
Weight of Cue: No minimum / 25 oz. [708.75 gm] maximum
Width of Tip: No minimum / 14mm maximum

The cue tip may not be of a material that can scratch or damage the addressed ball. The cue tip on any stick must be composed of a piece of specially processed leather or other fibrous or pliable material that extends the natural line of the shaft end of the cue and contacts the cue ball when the shot is executed..

The ferrule of the cue stick, if of a metal material, may not be more than 1 inch [2.54 cm] in length.

These are the WPA standards at http://www.wpa-pool.com/index.asp?content=rules_spec. BCA and ACS are WPA sanctioned and abide by these rules.

APA obviously it doesnt matter since your not allowed to use a jump cue or break down a cue anyway. though i have heard its allowed in the masters divisions, though i havent been able to find a written rule set or equipment guidelines for that

Also i have yet to find written or published TAP rules and regulations.

Thanks guys. I don't know why 45 " was stuck in my head.

I don't think the handle for a 45" jump cue would fit in most pouches. A 12.5" handle (not counting the pin) is about the limit for some.
