Old Pool Halls --- Need your help !!!!

I am asking for some help for a website I hope to get going. I have secured the name www.oldpoolhall.com . I am planning on paying tribute to pool halls around the U.S. that qualify as a genuine Pool Hall. I would like to tell a story of each of those pool halls with pictures of the inside or outside, pictures of the players that frequented them along with stories of the players and the pool hall.

The Color Of Money came out in 1986 and spawned the birth of the strip mall pool places. I am focusing on the pool halls before then.. Every good pool player had favorite pool halls, along with the one he spent most of his time in.

I think it would be really neat to have a site where you could read up on the important pool halls of the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's. I would also like to dedicate a section to even older ones, but getting info on them might be hard to do.

For those of you that wish to donate pictures, along with stories, feel free to send them to photos@oldpoolhall.com

I bet alot of you either have pictures, poloroids, slides or tapes.... I would be more that happy to scan any pictures/slides you may have and would also transfer them to a CD or DVD for you. Pictures/slides are at risk of deteriorating or being damaged by floods/fire and other events. I would send you 2 CD's or DVD's back in return, one you can store safely at your house and the other you can give to someone else, so if something ever happens at one place, you have not lost everything. I know, because at 35 years old, I lost everything I had acquired thru 35 years on this earth, because of some kids playing with lighters at my apt. complex.

I would scan them at a high resolution (300 x 300), which would allow you to print them or view them in great detail. I can also clean up some that may have spots on and such. I would also give credit to those donating. Also, if you have a website already up with pictures of players and pool halls, I would be in debt to you if you offered permission to use some of your stuff, with proper credit, of course.

If you mailed them, I would scan them right away and mail right back.

Anyways, I hope you all like the idea and would find it interesting. I know my heart always go back to the old pool halls... I was lucky enough to experience one of them as my home turf and I don't believe there are many left these days. The players and the pool halls from those days deserve a home in cyberspace for all to enjoy.

Thanks much,

Greg

google on Smith Billiards in Springfield, MA, I think its been there over 100 years.

What a great site Captain, I hate that there aren't any poolrooms around here like that with that much history.

BTW Cali, I look forward to your website coming online. Please keep us updated, I love looking at old photos and reading old stories about the older poolrooms. Great Idea

Thanks,
I see you are in Baltimore, have you seen Jeff Brinkman aka Piano Man around town anywhere? I use to play 1P with him at the Flamingo and we all lost touch with him after he moved back home.

As far as old Polroooms, I love the smell that hits you when you first walk in the door, pure heaven.:D

I'm hoping someone has old photos of Circus Billiards (circa 60's - 70's) in San Jose, CA ...

I exchanged a whole lot of money in that place in the old days ... Can't say I ate "three squares a day" (everyday), but I didn't starve either ...

Yeah he's still hanging around, I think he shoots out of Run-n-out in Dundalk a lot. We shot in the same master's league for a while but I haven't seen him in probably 6 months or better

Old poolrooms

Baltimore had some very famous Poolrooms such as Kleins all the great players played there including Greenleaf Willy Mosconi Boston Shorty Eddie Kelly who worked there as a house man and downstairs as dance instructor. Then there was Bennies on Belvedere Avenue Billy Incardona played there almost 50years ago Washington Rags Richard Riggie The Jockey Norman Howard Henry Gordon The Sharpess Gambler of them all. Nockos a dirt hole where everybody played cards and Ping Pon.GlenBurnie Poolroom where every money player played including Jack Cooney The Magician and Billy Incardona and Little Riggie so that's just some of the POOLROOMS I'm tired of thinking how great it was to be part of it all. Plenty of great memories. I think Billy Incardona should write a book because he knows so many true stories and it would lead to a great movie.

My family has run our room since 1966 and you can read about our story on our website. Just click on the family history tab.

What a great idea! I hope you get the information you are looking for, I would enjoy looking at the site.

Check out "The Palace" in Frisco. Its not there anymore but I'm sure alot of guys on this forum have played there. Also look at "The Palace" in Anchorage. The 2 snooker tables there came from the Palace in Frisco. And it has the greatest collection of antique brunswicks you have ever seen. Mark Griffin owned it. I'm sure he has pictures.

I got a couple more to check out. A place called Boochos on s.9th st. in Columbia,Mo. Very old narrow brick building. Only a single row of old and very nice Brunswicks. I think its been there since the turn of the century. WW1 vintage Monarchs. Another place with some history is "Mothers" in Charlotte. I heard it might have closed but somebody has stories. I understand Wade Crane hung there. And Allison. "Dots" Billiards in Rocky Mount is kinda cool. Its been there for 40 years. This makes me wish I had taken pictures when I had the chance. Sorry. Another great pool room is Bill Schicks in Shreveport, La. It has a bar that is huge and over a 100 yrs old. Also "Gold Crown Billiards " in Erie,Pa. on Peach St. Guy by the name of Pat owns it. Got 30 Crown 1's. Have fun Don

Very old place, I have played there many times.. Go down 2 flights of steps from the street.. To the pool room, And take a step back in time!

piano man...Since you are a new poster, you might not have noticed that the post you responded to is 3 yrs old. Captain Hook doesn't post as much as he used to, but he's still here occasionally. You can PM him to reach him. He and I played some one pocket a couple months ago at the Flamingo.
