13mm Traingle tips harder than 14mm?

A fellow AZBer gave me the tip that 13mm Triangles are slightly harder than the 14mm ones. Have you cuemakers on the forum found this to be the case?. My guess is that the tanning process might get a little deeper into the core of the leather because the tips are smaller. Any thoughts?.

The tips are not tanned. The hides are taned & then the tips are punched out like cookies. Tips from the same box can range from medium hard to hard to soft...JER

If what you say is true, why is it when I cut a Triangle in half, the brown finish penetrates an eighth inch all the way around the tip?. Shouldn't the tanning only be visible on the top and bottom of the tip if it's stamped out after the tanning?.

Don't they undergo two processes, one that gives them a blueish tint and one that gives them a brownish tint?.

What makes you think that that is tanning solution? It is most likely a sealer that is put onto almost all tips to keep them from drying out or absorbing moisture before installation. Yes, they are both blue chromate tanned and vegetable tanned.

It actually makes sense to me and I will tell you why. Because the tip is pressed into a dome, the center does not get pressed as much as the sides and is a bit softer. You will discover this if you try to do a retip on say a 12 mm and try to use a 14 mm tip and cut it all the way down. You end up with a sponge because almost the whole tip now consists of the center when you have to cut down the tip that much. So to say a 13 is harder then a 14 may be true in that there is less spongy center volume wise.
