Fact or Fiction about Packages

I have been around this game almost twenty years and have watched and played with some of the best. I always here rumors about this guy laid down an 8 pack or this guy laid down a 22 on a barbox and I just never see it.

Shand and Scott just played a race to 150 on a valley barbox and the best Shane did was a 7 and people were saying there might be a 15. At the US Open this year I watched Mika just destroy the field and he didn't run more than a 4 all be it a lot of 4's. I did see Don Mills lay down a six pack on Kiamco to win a rack your own 9 ball set, but that game deosn't count. I know Earl laid it down for 1 million, but the way he did it in Jay's book was far from text book but they all count, so that is one we can document.

No Lying what is the absolute most racks you saw run in person. No rumors or stories only let me know if you were actually present for this feet? Just wondering.

In person, (or on tape would count as well...)

I rented a couple accu-stats tapes of Earl in about 1992, I think they were the last Sands tourney's he played with that black smoochy before switching to Cue-tech.

It was one of those tapes where they put two "blow outs" on one tape. I think he had a 5 in one and a 6 or 7 in the other. Being Earl, he never let the cue ball quit rolling and 6 racks took about as many minutes. LOL

The Pearl could definitely string packages faster than anyone for a while there.

As far as no "BS, room full of witnesses", the most I know of is the 14 Archer laid down on a Diamond in 1993 against Bustamonte in an action match. Race to 13, he ran the set, then the first rack of the following set.

That's a no BS, witnessed 14, on a tight table, for the cash, against a top level opponent. It'll be hard to top that one.

Django asked to double the bet after the 13, now there's some stones.

IIRC the table went on ebay last year, for like $2500. Wish I had the money to buy that piece of history.

This was also about the time of Archer moving to the fore as the premier American, maybe top 9-baller on the planet.

Same article they quoted Parica as strolling through the practice room and saying anyone, except Archer, could have the 8, there may have been a min $$$ attached too.

Under tournament pressure it harder then in practice.
The most I've seen was 6 packs, more then once (and i was racking...) by a guy that i used to call a friend and who also trained me for a while.

I used to see an up and coming Dennis Hatch play on the FL Tour almost any weekend (89-93).

In Daytona, in 1989 at Cue Gardens (Now Brown's Billiards) I witnessed (yes, personally, from 10' away) Dennis show up cold, draw Buddy Hall, win the toss, borrow Buddy's break cue and lay down a perfectly executed 6, on a 9' Gandy Big-G, woolly cloth, IIRC 4.75" pockets.

He then pushed out to a bank, Which Buddy banked in and ran 2.

Then Buddy broke dry and DH ran 3 from there and out.

9-2 win over the best 9-baller walkin', the set took about half an hour and two innings. Pretty Solid for an 18yo kid.

.Just to finish the story for historical details; IIRC Dennis lost in the final to Mizerak, I think 11-9, in a lackluster match. That field included Parica, Miz, DH, Buddy, Kennedy, Grossman, Bento, Brown, Martin, Sweet, Brunt, Adams, Pec, Townsend, and another 50-75 stone killers I didn't know. I am sure I left some out, but I am 99% on all the names I listed.

Back then Archer, Strickland, Rempe, Seigel, Miz, Crane, David Howard, Benny Conway, Ray Martin, Steve Cook, Tommy Kennedy, Daulton, Townsend, Parica, Breedlove, DiToro, Tommy Brown, Jeff Adams, and many many more stomped around Florida.

Around 1991 Dennis Hatch is rampaging through the FL Tour, again...

He's in the Finals of an event, against former World All Around Champ Steve Cook.

Cook is cruising, Dennis is struggling. Cook gets to the hill 10-3 and breaks dry. Poor Steve never got to shoot again.

Dennis got up out of his funk, stuck 10-3, tired, in the wee hours of the morning after playing all weekend and puts up an 8.

Pretty Solid. ;)

Jay Flowers used to offer you the field if he got Dennis, even money to win the tournament.

There's an Accu-Stat match with Danny Medina running 8 racks on Billy Incardona. It was from The Sands, around 1990.

There is a match between Jason Kirkwood and Bart Goode where Jason wins the flip and runs out the set, I think its a race to seven. Its on MIPlayers tour site.

I have seen quite a few 6's and 7's.

Best I've seen was a guy playing 5 ahead. He was down 2 and broke and ran the set for a 7. They played again and the other guy won the flip and broke dry. The player ran the second set out for what can only imagine to have been a 13 had he won the flip and made a ball on the first break.

Best one pocket performance was [Game 1] watching a relative unknown bank two to get in line and run 7. [Game 2] Ball made on break and ran 8 and out. [Game 3] Other player breaks and the guy banks one in and runs 8 and out.

I'm not sure if anyone caught it on tape, but Johnny Archer BnR the set 13-0 against Francisco Bustamante at an event in the 90s.

Most I've seen live is an 8 pack (9ball) by a local player. I've seen 5 racks BnR in 8ball on a tight Dufferin 9 footer.

In televised tournament play, I think the biggest package I've seen was the one Wu put together, which I believe was an 8-pack, against a fellow Asian player a couple of years ago, although I would guess there have been bigger packages ran in televised tournament play.

I do have an interesting note on this subject, however. At the players meeting for this year's DCC 9-ball event, it was mentioned that there was a rule in place that would prevent a player from losing a match without ever getting to shoot. If you lose the lag, and subsequently watch your opponent run 7 racks and out, the match is not over. You get to break the 8th rack, and have one opportunity to match the feat, after which, IIRC, there would be a second lag and a one-game tie breaker. It was also announced that the rule had never been needed, as no player had yet ran 7 and out from the lag in the 10-year history of the event. I found this very interesting, since the tournament draws hundreds of the best players in the world, and those Diamonds just don't play all that tough with brand new 860 on them.

I was at the bar at CM Lee's in Seminole, FL around 1983 or 4. In the finals of (I believe was a Suncoast 9-ball tournament), he was down something like 8-2 and ran 9 racks out for the win. I asked him if he wanted to play some 3-cushion about 15 minutes after the win...he said he was tired. Probably lucky for me. Johnnyt

yup, in post #2

saw Stevie put 7 on Shannon in a Viking Tour event in Greenville on 9 foot Gold Crowns. Shannon was up 3 to 1 and missed. Stevie ran that game out and then the next 7.

I watched Danny Medina string 9 together at a bar box event in Colorado back in the late 1980's (Huebler Cup). I sort of remember that he strung 8 in one match, and continued to string 9 together in the following match. I only saw the 9. If anybody remembers that tournament - please correct me if I am wrong about the two runs being back to back.

To answer the question, the largest package ive actually seen run was myself. I ran 5 on a Diamond Bar box.
Ive done 4 on a Robertson 9ft with big ass pockets.

I dont get out much ;-)

I have seen Fransisco Bustamante ran a 7-pack in 10-ball against Efren Reyes in a 8-man tournament in Manila, Philippines in Feb 2007.
