Book Review: How To Tip A Pool Cue

I recently bought the book How To Tip A Pool Cue by Terry Macioge. It's meant for those without a lathe or expensive equipment.

I was hoping to learn the secret of how to do the most difficult part of the job, that of trimming an oversize tip down to even with the ferrule without damaging the ferrule. Unfortunately, the book devotes no space to that topic except for referring the reader to products made by Porper and Willard for that purpose. I've never used trimming devices without doing some harm to the ferrule (or shaft, in the case of the Ultimate tip tool). I'm a klutz, I guess, but there it is.

The author does give some nice info regarding glues and how to safely clamp the tip while it sets (he recommends a thick rubber band). However, if I can't safely do the whole job I'm not interested in learning how to safely do only a part of it. So, unfortunately, I can't really recommend this book.

Then I turned to a local cuemaker and watched as he did it on a lathe. In ten minutes I had a perfectly shaped tip. So, once again, I learn the wisdom of Clint Eastwood's saying in one of his Dirty Harry movies:
A man's GOT to know his limitations.
