Because they are not the same size.
Joss are 5/16 x 14 because that is what Balabushka used
because that is what Paradise used because that is what Rambow used.
Schon are .308 x 14 because...

so if i wanted to make some joint protectors for my schons, does anyone know where i might buy the pins? i take it from this discussion that the standard 5/16 x 14 threaded insert would work well enough, correct?
i already emailed Evan Clarke to see if he would sell me a couple or point me to a supplier, but this thread caught my attention.

My Schon shafts will screw down on my Joss butt until the pilot of the shaft hits
In the past, Schon has used both size pins I believe. Also, if a mechanic has in the past, used the Joss pin on the Schon shaft, it could open the threads just enough so that it will now fit a Joss.

OK, I can see that some numbers are needed for clarity.
A Joss pilot is .460/.480".
A Schon pilot is .530".
The smaller pilot Joss shaft will fit the Schon handle.
The larger pilot Schon shaft WILL NOT fit the Joss handle.
(the pilot gets in the way).
Any further confusion on this issue should be addressed in the owners manual.

I have seen 5/16X14 joint screws range from .306 to .310, Also, some of the Schon cues probably the older ones, had a .302X14 joint screw.
You and Dick are both correct. Some early Schons used a smaller dia. pin and subsequently a tighter insert. Those shafts probably won't go on a Joss sized pin 1/2 way before they lock-up.
Pin diameter aside, the Schon shaft won't 'seat' on a Joss joint because of the size of it's pilot.
The Joss shaft however should work on any year Schon.

I believe you misunderstood the question KJ. The female joint protector with the standard 5/16-14 insert would certainly be large enough to fit the Schon's pin but I do believe the standard pins would be to large in diameter to fit the Schon shafts.

It might depend on when the Schon was actually made, But anyways, I have some screws from when Mali closed, .298X14
ok, so i went to the local billard supply house and he had 5/16-14 pins and inserts which worked fine with my (6 month old) schon. soooo, either pin makers are making their pins a little small to fit both sets of cues or schon has moved to the standard size. to be fair, these were made for joint protectors, so, it just may be these pins which are undersized, not sure.

I wasn't going to reply to Dick's post because I wanted to confirm for myself before I said one more word. I didn't have a current Schon cue in front of me at the time so I would have to wait until the next time I went to Sey's to get the needed measurements first-hand. I have a great deal of respect for Dick and did not want to be at odds with him over this.
I was aware that some early Schons used a smaller pin & insert but I was under the impression that the newer Schons used the more common pin set that we see on other 14 thread cues.
Well, being Friday and the day that I usually deliver work to Sey, I got my numbers. The current Schon pin is .307" dia.
The threaded 14 tpi rod that I get from Connecticut Cue Parts is .306".
I was also aware that "justaguy" had stated that he had a newer Schon.
There is no reason that "justaguy" can't make a set of JPs to fit his Schon using the readily available pins & inserts.

D*mn KJ, I sure thought I was safe on that one. However, in the future, never worry about correcting me when I'm wrong ( with my memory that seems to be happening more and more often lately). Bad information has no place on this forum. Truthfully, I wasn't aware that the newer Schons were using the larger pins. Nice to know.
