Southwest Cues

if you compare the SW hit to other cues, the hit is quite unique. very dry, very sharp. it has a great feel for the cb. the result is a good playing, unique cue.

it also happens to look very pretty without getting fancy. really, it's very beautiful in its simplicity. and considering its desirability, it is also a relatively affordable cue.

at 30 cues/month, i consider it a semi production cue with a custom cue sensability.

Balance point is between 18-1/4 to 18-3/4' from buttplate on the several that I've had. I play with one now that I like a good deal. The standard shafts are too stiff at 13mm IMO. The SW "standard pro" taper has a smidge more flex and makes it easier to move the cue ball around.

Thanks for the response.

Anyone know whats the balance point for this cue, say from the end of the butt?

Looking forward to any info.

southwest balance point

I play with an ebony plain jane SW (i.e. no points, just solid forearm) it has a special butt taper, meaning it is just bit thinner than the standard SW's come. My cue balances at 19 inches from the buttplate and has the standard SW tapers on the shafts. My cue has factory Ivory Ferrules.

all this to say: ebony cue with a compound taper, stiff shafts w/ ivory ferrules and a forward balance make for an awesome hitting and feeling cue. There is a reason for the 8 year wait for a southwest. By far the best hitting cue I have owned to date.

kershenbrock's original taper for the cue had a "coke bottle" type shape in the grip and butt. ergo, the fat grip feel.

personally, i think SW's growth away from that shape has affected the hit

my cue is a JF era cue (96 vintage), have they changed the butt taper since then? I have owned / played with an old Kershenbrock about 10 years ago (stolen) still have one of the shafts that I sometimes use on my SW. I dont recall the coke bottle taper, but the compound taper was more profound in the forearm of the cue, or at least more so than the SW I have.

my sw/dpk(that david has verified that he built) is from the 80's and it gets a tad fat at the back of the grip....that's where i was refering to about the coke bottle shape. ed young has brought it up to me as well,,,and that dpk and ed are once again using his original template.

don't know when SW started slimming the grip.

Am glad you liked the cue and the centennial case i threw in for good measure.

The SW cues plays totally different from the Schrager, as different as night and day. Its a lot stiffer and less feel than the Schrager. But i admire SW cues' consistency, every cues from the entry level Satin ones to the fancy ones plays the same.

My Kersenbrock does the same thing near the back of the grip. I kind of like the feel of it compared to the newer southwests though. Of course I have been playing with it for years now and I am very used/attached to that cue
