There were several popular games similar to the one pictured above ^ in the late 1800's. (some of which, like 'bagatelle', eventually led to the development of modern pinball machines)
Below is a table very much like the game seen in the photo above, except that this one doesnt have the center hole, and, you have the option of playing the ball(s) with either your cue or your hand. ( the hole was a hazard)

Thanks for the pointer. Of course the table doesn't allow any power shots since the balls would hit the ceiling. An extension that would solve that is to turn the J-shaped sides into C-shaped so that a ball that went into the "cushion" at high speed would do a boomerang and come back at you slightly off the table.
