first i'd like to say i'm sorry about the timing of this i know you're having family difficulties but i had to say it. i gave you my number in several pm's so you could call me and this could have been done privately.

i ordered the cue back in febuary and you said you could have the cue to me in 90 days. that seemed fast and fair to me and so i placed my order and sent the payment. i've pm'd several times (past the 90 day mark) for pictures of the cue in progress or an estimated arrival time for when the cue would be finished. When i finally did get pictures of the cue i ordered it was not the cue i ordered.yes it did resemble it but it was not the same as i showed in the example. it does look good and i'm sure you'll have no problem selling it to someone else but i don't feel like waiting any longer for the cue i ordered.

once again sorry about the timing but it has to be said. please pm me about the details

You might want to pick up the telephone and give Kevin a call!? I'm sure he'll take care of you....it seems to me that he has some pressing family matters going on at the moment!

Well lets set the record straight. You ordered a no veneer 4pt coco into bem, linen wrap, and coco buttsleeve. You paid a $375 deposit on the cue in Feb of 07. There was obviously some confusion if you thought the wait on a made from scratch custom 4pt was 90 days. The 90 day wait is on j/b's & hustler style cues...and often depending on how fancy, it can be even longer. Short splice cues made from absolute scratch are much longer...closer to a year or more. There was no problem with you until about a month ago you requested a refund unless I supplied pics of the cue proving it was near finished. I supplied pics & you said that it was exactly as you imagined. The cue just had its final pass taken and is now getting hardware. Now soon as I return from my family emergency you sent a pm saying it wasn't correct...that there wasn't enough space between the base of the points. I replied no problem, I could move the wrap up a tad to get the effect you wanted. I was a bit puzzled as most others want the points closer together at the base...not with a wide gap. But I was going to make it as you requested. Then you were concerned that it would make the wrap too long...well it would not. There is no set standard on how long a wrap area should be...and extending it 1/2" is nothing. Wraps lengths often vary from cue to cue & from maker to maker.
So now...instead sending me a pm you want to start a public thread asking for a refund? Class move buddy. True, I did not call you but I have answered every pm. I didn't feel the need to call CA to discuss if 1/2" would make the wrap too long. You never said "I need my money back, please call me". Wouldn't matter anyway. I don't refund deposits on custom orders that I've been working on for 9 months, I have more than that invested anyway. If I called everyone who wanted to speak with me then I'd spend 90% of the day on the phone. I learned this long ago, thats why I have no phone in my shop as it rang nonstop & I got zero work done. Also I'm sorry but I simply refuse to take short cuts & hurry a cue for anyone. Its my name on the cue and it will represent me many years from now, long after I'm sure you flip it. I make the cue correct no matter who its for because the cues will be around long after I'm gone as well. If you think that 9 - 10 - 11 months is too long to wait for a custom made from scratch cue...then you better check around a bit.
I have a lot going on right now & my #1 concern is the health of my wife & our future son. If I have to slow things down a bit until our son is born in Dec. then so be it...thats my main priority. Just to show what a stand up guy I am...I will do this for you. Someone pay Sam his $375 deposit back...and here is the deal of the year...instead of paying the $375 balance...I'll sell you the cue for $100 as soon as its completed.:) I just want this guy off my back. Other cuemakers take note. Whomever wants to take advantage of the deal let me know. Below is a pic of what the cue will look like. Thank you.

Thank you John. PM replied to.

Kevin,
First off , hope your family is OK. I too just had a son 10 months ago. Prayers with you.
Second, I do not know of any maker out there that has not had this problem. No matter how much you explain yourself , nothing ever gets worked out.
I used to take orders years ago on faith. Learned thru several burns , not the way to do it. I too ask for a deposit of at least 1/2 of the agreed purchase price. This really helps weed out the lookers and locks down the payment for the work being done.
I am an unknown , but I do alot of work locally and have found that most people you have a problem with like to twist and turn the details to suit them and hurt you and your business.
To all , cuemakers work hard for there money , no doubt. Some make more than others , but all put alot of time , effort , and pride in their work. Please appreciate not only Mr. Varney , but all makers for there skills and talent.
Just my 2 cents,
Jim Lee

Tap tap tap.
I do this as a hobby and love for cues.
Maybe someday we'd all get stuck with cheap slave labor cues with green woods and cheap parts.
I hope everything starts going right for Kevin.

Poolplayer, while I appreciate where you are at in this whole thing, and I am in the same boat in more than one instance...when you are dealing with custom cue makers(one man operations)...more than due consideration has to be given. I am the most impatient person on the planet...I have been waiting on a Sugartree for almost 2 years, that was promised a year ago, and a Varney J/B that was promised 6mos. ago with payment in full, not a deposit. These gentleman are human beings with families...and sometimes unforseen s#1t happens which they are forced to deal with. We've all been there...some of us are even lucky to get paid leave....self-employed cue-makers are not!!! I am not saying that you are not justified. What I am saying is "Do you really want this man making your cue when his mind is justifiably elsewhere!!!" I don't! You ordered a cue from this gentleman because of his dedication & reputation. Let the man have his time, we all need it once in a while, and Kevin is more than justified in taking this time right now. Kevin is fairly young, would you begrudge someone like Bob Frey, who is older and going through some health issues??? Of course not! If you are in a hurry, order a Predator. Sometimes good things take time. When he is back to good, good things will happen. I'm in the same boat as you...but, Kevin"s wife suffered a very tragic loss and is carrying their first child(son), in her last trimester...please understand his concern...it will be worth the wait...I promise.

Kevin, God bless and all the best!!! Marc

if Sam ordered the cue and was told he would get it in 90 days then he is due a refund, and he shouldn't be bashed in the head for trying to get it.it sounds like he has been trying to contact Kevin but hasn't been able to.i have dealt with Sam before and everything went very smoothly.i can't believe he would come here and start this thread and it is all a bunch of lies.it just doesn't seem right?

Thanks Marc. I'm shipping Coats cue today, and then final touches & your j/b will ship on Fri. Thank you for your patience.:)
Cuemaking isn't an exact science. I've had more than one instance where I was about complete with a cue only to have the wood move, I screwed something up (yes, it happens) or I'm just not satisfied with the result...all only to have to start over. Reminds me a bit of my local friend Dave Fingers. He simply wanted to take square wood & turn it into a cue the same day. When he learned the length of time it took to make a cue correctly, he had no interest. He made several very fast, although warned of what the future possibly held for his cues. He's now out of cuemaking totally & works 8-5 at the local grocery warehouse.
Honestly, I have 5 or 6 cues I'm currently working on everyday but I'm behind on at this point, 3 of them very behind...but thats just part of being a busy cuemaker. I'm very blessed with lots of orders coming in daily...and cues ship out daily as well. But I simply can't build them as fast as the orders are coming in. At this rate within the next couple of years my waiting list will become a very long multi year wait thats so common with many fine makers. Just spoke with Brent at BHQ and he's already at about a 2yr wait. Whats the wait for Eric Crisp now? If you do fine work like Eric then your wait list will grow rather quickly to the likes of Harris or Searing. Patience rewards with wonderful cues...barking at the maker doesn't get it made any faster or nicer.
Thank you to all my happy Varney owners out there & a big thank you as well to all those waiting to become happy Varney customers. Trust me...I'm working as fast as I possibly can all the while trying to balance time with my wife in need, infant cpr classes, child birth classes, Dr. appointments, etc....and while keeping the work quality to the high Varney standard everyone expects.
God bless & everyone have a wonderful day!:)

My son was born December 2003. It makes for the best Christmas you will ever have.

Good luck. Best wishes.

Not taking sides here, but if what Kevin is saying is true, this is precisely why most cuemakers choose to stay away from AZ altogether !!

Kevin, wishing you and your family all the best for the healthy arrival of your son. :)

Kevin,

I don't know you, but I like your style. You responded a little over three hours after Poolplayers initial post. He had already posted three times on this same thread (within a two hour period). He seemed a little impatient to get a quick response, which you gave him (and us).

Interesting to me is the fact that we haven't heard from Poolplayer after your response to his request for a refund. Maybe he'll come on here now and bash me for getting involved. It is a public forum and I have an opinion, so "no sale" there.

I hope everything works out for you and your wife, and your newly minted son. This will be your finest work, and it only took nine months!
