........................

Most of the J series joss cues have gold letters on the shaft and butt collars. The exception is sometimes there were some custom J style cues that will say custom, usually in white letters but sometimes gold.

the older cues seem to hit better, probably from better shaft wood. If the shaft is original to the cue the gold letters will line up on shaft and butt 99% of the time.

J-18 & N-7

The original J-18 was marked joss custom in gold letters at the joint, The N-7 is the newer version the ones i have seen have a short butt cap and are stamped Joss in the joint with a serial number. The diferences in the cue used in the COLOR OF MONEYand the reproductions is the COM cue has no inlays in the points.

The Joss Cue in The Color of Money has a white wrap with black flecks. The N7 reproduction is basically the same cue, but it has a black wrap with white flecks.

here's a color of money cue, joss in gold at the joint -

which is it? j18 or n7??

The N7 color of money cue had different shaped inlays, but the same basic design as the Joss #18. I think there have been some variations.
Maybe someone has a close up or still from the movie to finally solve it, but here's some help:

Here's a Joss 18 (2 photos):

Heres a couple screen grabs of the cue from the movie. Sorry about poor quality as they are simply photos of television screen with movie paused. I was always curious about it as it seems the currently available cues that are sold as "Color of Money" cues don't look like the actual cue from the movie. The inlays are different in the points as was mentioned.

The "Balabushka" in the movie is based on the J-18, but different. The movie cues used notched diamonds. The cue used in the movie was unique. The various N-7 variants down the years have been based on the movie cue, but never the same, as Dan Janes wanted the movie cue to stay unique. The most radically different N-7 versions have been the gold letter edition, with the additional forearm inlays, and the current model, which did away with the white butt cap entirely and has a "Hoppe ring" instead.
