Turning Players Into Robots

I hope no one really finds a system that works for everyone that plays pool. What a shame it would be to watch a bunch of robots standing at attention at the table, turning so many degrees, standing the same way, and punching numbers into their handheld computers. Johnnyt

Don't worry Johnny, it'll never be everyone so long as you don't use it.

Don't worry, I won't use it. Pretty soon players will be toting more measuring devices, lasers, and computers in their case than cues. Johnnyt

Luckily for the game, it still relies far, far, far, more on stroke and mental awareness and confidence than it does any aiming system. There in lies the variables that would prevent your robot syndrome from ever becoming reality. Not to worry!

Thank you for that. I feel at peace again with the game. Now I can take a nap. I'm wore out from worry.. Johnnyt

I think the aiming method that would come closest to achieving this is my patented method of Ball Fringe Delineation (BFD)-

J/K :D

Systems are valuable training devices that develop muscles memory and teach them what to do. When you actually play you should be as natural as possible. It is much like a Karate Kata. When you actually fight you are more free form. In pool the goal is to have it happen naturally, that is the result of proper practice. If you fall back on systems when you are competing you will be pron to dogging it due to lack of confidence. A competitive match it the test kitchen for what you have learned in practice but is played different then practice. You then take what you have learned in competition back to the practice table and that is how you ultimately improve. There really is no other way, there are not easy short cuts or tricks, it is a culmination of the various experiences.

Golf has been trending this way for many years...if pool had anywhere near the same payouts, it would go that way too. Much quicker.

14 year olds at the golf range (high school team players) videotape their swing, step into each shot the same way, putt with an exact routine, use all kind of training aids, use range finders to "shoot distances" even when pitching less than 100 yds,etc...

It does look robotic and stiff, but when you watch them knock down the 200 yard flag with 4 irons and they're 150 lbs and in high school, you have to respect the results.

If you see a person that is experienced with Cte, he will be moving around the table from shot to shot just like anyone else and you wouldn't even know he was using it. I have been shooting with a version of Cte for about a couple years now and you would never know i was using it ... ijs

The way I miss you wouldn't think I am using an "aiming system" at all :-)

Also this sentiment begs the question of whether an Iphone's accellerometer plus the gps/trilocation functions could be used somehow to plot angles...................

Lay it down next to a cue ball in line with another ball's edge and see if it can tell you how many degrees to "pivot".............

Nothing like stirring up more controversy eh?

Don't worry - I won't look like a robot . . . .

I've used the same pre-shot routine for years - never varies a bit , but I PROMISE I don't look like a robot .

1) take a hearty swallow of Early Times .
2) stagger up to the table
3) gesture wildly in the air with my cue in the general direction of the intended pocket
4) knock the chalk off the table in an attempt to pick it up .
5)leave the chalk on the floor , stick my cue in it and grind away
6)tilt my head sideways and sqint at the object ball with one eye
7)stroke effortlessly
8)watch the ball roll gracefully into the pocket . . . .

WAIT !! That's the wrong pocket !
and that's not even the object ball -- that's the cue ball !!

9) wait my turn.
10) repeat 1-8 , above

LOL! Tried to give ya agreenie, but was told I had to spread it around. I represent that system, and I don't use early times...

If there was a system that could turn my game into Ralf's or Thorsten's I would do it in a heartbeat!

Unfortunately, that will never happen-too many variables to consider. So, I guess I will have to keep banging away happily at the balls...

I remember a few months ago, a group of researchers announced that they had completely researched every possible game of checkers and resolved that it was possible to force at least a draw, no matter what your opponent did. It kinda ruined the game for me.

I hope that never happens to pool.

And that is my point for pool also. Johnnyt

I hope that never happens to chess!

Don't worry. As long as pool is played by humans that won't happen. The "winning move" itself is obvious: Put ball into pocket and get position. But it depends on the execution. And even if there was the super ultimate perfect technique, it still had to be executed by human beings.

Perhaps this will be added in the new release.
