Looks like they could both use ferrules, How old are the shafts

the both ferrules really arnt' bad at all.. just some chalk blue. the 5/16 14 is about 1.5years..only used for my break cue
3/8 10 is about 6 month old..

Im glad to see im not the only guy who didnt roll the tip pick on the tip and ended up stabbing the ferrule of a 314 shaft.:D Arent the ferrules specially made for the predator shaft? Will it hit differently if i put a new ferrule on that isnt a predator one?,perhaps Mike Webb will have an answer.

It will hit totally different, I have the 314 ferrules as well as the Z shaft ferrules, and before anyone asks, My verbal agreement with Predator is, I can not give them out, even to other cuemakers. Strictly for my use in repairing their shafts.

i second that. Through the years i made 4-5 custom pred shafts. seems like without the ferrule the shaft is useless,

If u wan to replace a 314 ferrule. dun be lazy settle for nothing else but the original.

doesnt predator have a gaurentee on there ferrules?

anyways.. when i owned a schon, i had a predator shaft that was made for a paul mottey, it was nice.. had fancy joint rings and all.. it also had a regular lenth ivory ferrule.. man did that play nice.. i could kick myself for selling it when i sold my schon.. i could have used it on my current mottey :)

it played sharp like a predator but it seemed you can hit the ball softer and it played so nice...

Thanks for the info Mike,i thought i read that the ferrule was a part of the shafts hit and low deflection,i am glad i didnt get mine replaced with just any old ferrule, its only a small nick, more a mental thing,i just turn the shaft so i dont see it,any idea on a price to replace it?,and could it be done at VF?

I'm not working Valley Forge. I would call Predator and ask if they know of any repair people going to Valley Forge that have and are authorised by them to replace the ferrule, I charge $40.00 to replace the predator ferrules. There's nothing special to changing them but some people including some cue makers don't understand the importance of their design, so they plug the shaft and put a regular ferrule.

Thanks again Mike,i am sure there will be someone there doing it,alittle bit of everything going on.:)

I play with 5/16x14 predator shafts on my cues and i'd never use them to break with. The ferrule is plastic and there's an air pocket behind the ferrule and I don't think the shaft was designed for breaking since they introduced a predator break cue which is designed for breaking, but I have heard of people using them to break with.

I hate to give you the bad news but there's a space behind that tip also.

Mike, I knew there was a space behind the predator break shaft ferrule. I do cue repairs and I replaced a predator ferrule with a brown phenolic ferrule tip combo on a predator break shaft for a friend of mine. I was very surprised to find out that those shafts had the air pocket in them since I can't see any advantage for that on a break cue, but I guess predator does or they wouldn't have built it that way.

Their system is not bad with the thick phenolic and hard tip, why did you replace with the ferrule and void any warranty on the shaft. Just curious?

The cue belonged to a friend of mine and he got caught up in the latest craze in break cues - the phenolic ferrule/tip combination. He liked his predator break cue, but he had it in his mind that it could be improved with the phenolic ferrule instead of the original plastic ferrule tip. The warranty wasn't a concern for him and I told him that I hadn't done this or seen it done on a predator break cue, but he wanted me to do it for him and it turned out pretty well. He ended up selling the predator and buying a sledge hammer jump/break cue at the US Open last year (he wanted the jump cue option which the predator doesn't have).
