Lack of interest for Bonus Ball

Love BB

I watched the BB Stream from my mobile without any issue. I like the game. Its easy to understand and I think the new comers will enjoy it because of the scoring system. I agree that the lack of a crowd was a bit alarming but overall I love it.

I Liked It

Not understanding the game and all the quirky rules (still don't know what a continuation shot is) I game away with a positive impression. Not even sure I was watching the same program being commented on here (Phoenix v Minnesota), but here's what a liked:

- game combines high runs with strategy and safety play
- combines some features of straight pool (break), nine ball (break and rotation) and
one pocket (well, actually 3 pocket)
- the big run by Thorsten on the 3 7/8 pockets was incredible
- nice venue/stream design with the color codings and visible shot clocks

I hope it takes off. We need something to replace 9-ball!

Well I watched 5 Bonus Ball matches and I will not be watching anymore.

The freeze ups and untimely commercials were the final straw.

Show the damn commercials during a timeout or if no timeout is used then at the end of the game. Not in the middle of the game.

Oh, and when one of the announcers said "and there's (bonus ball girl who's name I have already forgotten) working hard" as she places a ball on the spot. Give me a break will you.

For those of you who enjoy this game I hope it works out for you.
It's just not working for me.

Don

Are they cutting costs already? I'm watching the match now and only see one BB girl. There were 2 last week.

Every time anything other than a normal straight in shot comes up, they put it on the screen and or talk about it.

A continuation shot is a combo or carom into the opponents pocket which allows you to keep shooting but you get no points.

One thing I would like to see is the teams travel, tell me that if the Houston team shows up in Houston vs a team that people wouldn't show up somewhere plus they would have a gate and % of food drinks.

Bonus ball should be more like last years Mosconi cup in England. The fans are what made that so enjoyable to watch. You could feel the energy of the crowd thru your computer screen.
No one wants to watch complete silence anymore! Bonus ball needs excitement and the crowd is the key.

Why is it that snooker tournaments get huge crowds in England and there kicked out for any out brakes of noise? dead silence all the time during play but the crowds keep full time and time again...I want to think that snooker in England don't have the shadowy crap that goes on in American pocket billiards. We can try to make whatever changes to rules and regulations but the game will never be the same and it once was because of all the dumb moves pool players make to gain a win or dollar even if it shits all over the future. I can't speak for all pool players in this country but most don't care about the game that comes tomorrow only the game that's played today. I want to think positive about the future of the game is this country but its really hard when there's more snakes in the grass everyday. Maybe we should move all pool games to china, if your suspected of doing funny business your hands are chopped off', if your caught in funny business your bagged up and tossed off the highest mountain.
When there's competition in this country it's not to long after we hear about some kinda of cheat, the games we don't have any funny business going on are the ones that are very strict about the rules and regulations... If there broken or betrayed there is serious consequences and huge fines.
Who dictates pool in America? Oh I forgot' its the land of the free...

They need a small boxing arena just off to the side where the cameras can switch to it easily. Then the audience could watch as pro pool players try to beat hell out of Earl.

Well nomatter what anyone says about the location, venue or the game. Its pretty obvious that people are not showing up to watch in droves. So there is something alittle wrong. Not sure if its the game, the lack of positive marketing or location but we know this much. Nobody is there. What does this tell us?

Actually I think it tells us nothing 2 weeks in... I don't know if they are giving out cheap/free tickets at the ticket booths... I have no clue as to how they expect that dynamic to work out but I doubt it even figures into the revenue stream... I think it would be more that a crowd is a nice addition to the set....

As far as the game... I liked it more than expected... I think a few things still need tweaked but it is not the train wreck I was expecting.... I'm going to let them have a few more weeks before I decide what I think there real chances are.. Anything pool related is going to be long odds..
The odds so far don't seem much longer than any other venture I could think of....

Nobody is at the venue because Chiborak does not strike me as a promoter. The stream is worth every penny but boy it could be so much better. When I was in Vegas for the VNEA I went to many pool halls and not a pro in sight. Shameful. I give this whole deal a D. The game and everything else I love. Yes I have not played it but next week I will start. It looks like it will improve your game for sure.

This MUST be hosted in the home team's poolhall. If the new York match yesterday were hosted at Steinway billiards (Earl's the house pro there), that place would have gone NUTS. There would have been a true home field advantage. I would definitely purchase a season pass to watch this live for all the NY home matches. This would attract the fans. Playing out of a Vegas venue provides no home field advantage, nor does it generate the true passionate fan base that you would get from playing at home. Take today's match between Houston and New York. Earl had some words with Scott. Imagine if that were in Houston! Then imagine the next time Houston came to New York. This needs to be played in pool rooms in the cities these teams represent - period. It will never survive played in Vegas with 10 people in the stands (several of which are alternate pool players). I don't think a multi-million $ production studio is as much of a draw as playing to the local crowd.

Just my opinion.

Check the very first Mosconi Cup. The turn out was about 50 people. People wont start showing up until people start learning the game. Look at AZ as an example. 10 days ago, 99.999% of people hated BB to the point of talking trash. This week it seems most enjoy it. We cant change the industry over night. It takes time, and all we can do is try our best to show people that this game is worth watching. Only time will tell.

Big difference between this & the Mosconi cup. One big difference is frequency. For one, The Mosconi cup is an annual event. WPBL is weekly. How many people from the same area are going to pack the stands week in & week out. When they do, what kind of rooting interest will they have? Even the Mosconi cup has a rooting interest & home field advantage. You get passionate home fans and passionate visitor fans. That dynamic brings energy and excitement which is shared by the players as well as remote viewers. Don't get me wrong, I want to see it succeed or I wouldn't take the time to post my opinions. I think travel to the cities represented by the teams are key. It's the partnership between passionate fans and great sports teams & personalities that make sports work. Bring WPBL to my town (NY), I want to root my team on! Bring the Houston matches to Houston, let them root their team on! When my team is playing away, I'll buy the PPV to watch them play. When they are home, I'll pay the gate fee to see em' live!

That would work much better. But they must pick the teams where the players from say Florida are on Florida teams. New York on New York teams. Then there's a real attachment to the community.

Would it cost the players more? I doubt it, a lot of them fly there then home anyhow between weeks. Some matches would even be drivable for teams.

disagree !!!

[...] Look at AZ as an example. 10 days ago, 99.999% of people hated BB to the point of talking trash.[...]

That is not true and, in fact, I dare to say such statement is quite disrespectful to the majority of posters who had taken interest in this venture from the start.
Why do you use the word “hate” again? Many of us were, and are, on your side !!!:)

Often, it so happens, that whilst getting a dream ride on a “high horse”, a person’s perspective changes too quickly and then one tends to indefinitely lose touch with the ground. Is it not the case here???:confused::confused:

Las Vegas, like said many times was by far the worse choice for this venture.
Why would people want to go see bonus ball. There's all the best shows in the world here. Best restaurants. And the local pool players, well im sure they would rather play a $10 nightly tourney. They are just not going to go spend an evening at the BB studio.

I see only one way BB can succeed and its definitely not the course their on.

Totally agree JJ...There is so much else to do in Vegas, no one is going to hunt down a converted warehouse, off the strip, to watch pool player's playing a game nobody (but us) ever even heard of !...It doesn't take a rocket scientest, to see, that Mr. Chiborak would have been a hundred times better off, if he had invested those tens of thousands, in a 'Dunkin' Donut' franchise !..(lottsa cops in Vegas )

He could have built one 'gold plated', at the best location in town, for what he has sunk in that 'empty' arena !.. He also, somehow managed to alienate, the two best promoter's (Mark and Greg) in the pool business...It will take a miracle to overcome all the horrible business decisions he has made !..Sorry, it ain't gonna happen !...Very sad situation !

Not worth watching, even if the BB girls were buck naked. All it is, is a paycheck for players that don't have a job. If I want commercials, I'll turn on my cable TV.

To be fair to BB, when they go to their own PPV stream, I'm sure there won;t be any commercials, at least not during the matches.

Because they are using UStream to provide it free right now, that's why we get the commercials. Anything in a free UStream will have commercials. That's why its free.

Of course, the timing was poor at the end of last nights BB match. The commercial break happened as they were about to start the shootout. I expect that the commercials on UStream are automated, and as such couldn't be avoided.

If Bonus Ball airs during the Southern Classic, I will never pay tribute to Bonus Ball again. These Canadians are coming to the United States and stepping on our valued American pool promoters, and it ain't right! Something needs to be done about it -- NOW!

USA, ALL THE WAY!
