How about a Drive, Putt & Chip Program for Pool?

I just got through watching the Drive, Putt & Chip contest for kids from maybe 8-15 in different divisions held at Augusta, would something like this work for Pool? I must say I enjoyed watching it and it will motivate more kids that watched to golf...again, would this work for pool?

We have the BEF and several kids programs in the US, I wonder if this is doable. And if so, what would the 3 disciplines be (i.e. break effectiveness; running the same 6 ball pattern; & a position drill)?

Thanks,
Dave

I watched some of that today and wondered the same. It was nice to see all the kids acting professionally and having fun.

Great idea, 12squared!
I think it's doable.
I imagine the 3 disciplines could be those that cut across multiple pool skill sets.

Perhaps call the BEF and be a pioneer.
Look up Samm Diep.
She is always a good one to talk to.

Is the BEF the only true junior program in North America? Maybe we should try some sort of fund raiser for it. There is alot of fundraisers on the fourm for less things, and not such good things as a junior program. I hope that makes sense. We players have to start thinking about the future of our sport. Maybe AZB is a good spot to start.

Samm is a friend of mine, I will point her to this thread to see what she thinks. Thanks!

I watched and loved it for a few reasons;#

1 Our little buddy Patrick Welch from here in RI won the 14-15 and under division (He just turned 14 last month). This kid has a been a joy to watch and I tell my son all the time thank god we have Patrick and Will (another 14yr old monster player) up here in RI. Without them and the higher standard they provide we would be lost!

2 How the event was structured. They had 11 regional playoffs that were filled by sectional qualifiers where 15,000 kids participated and ended up with 88 winners from the 11 regions. We're doing the same thing with the American Rotation Championship Series. Our original goal was to have 16 regions qualifying 2 players from each for our national championships. We're doing a lil switch to 32 regions and 1 players from each.

3 We want to use our united base for a similar format for junior pool players; have them qualify in sectionals (our clubs) and bring them together with money raised for regional and national titles.

3A More than a few, it was just a great event for all of them :) They're at Augusta!

Joe, that would be a great idea to couple the venues that are already participating in the ARC, but I was thinking of more of a skills challenge than a juniors tourney, is that what you had in mind? And how cool is it that you were friends w/one of the winners in Augusta.

Thanks for chiming in.

you could use Dr. Daves' pool school shots and rating system,if you believe in them. Also there use to be a game called equal offense that was in Robert Bynes standard book of pool that might work. Actually Bob Jewett probably knows the game,Byrnes reffered a lot to his stuff. This game is kind of like a skills test that peeps can play against each other i believe.

Yea sorry kind of jumped the gun there and was just excited about the general topic lol. Hadn't given much thought about just doing the skills challenge but adding it in addition to regular competitions. I think we could do as others suggested and use some of the skills Dave or Bob has or put our minds together to come up with something that would work and be fun.
Bottom line for me is get 8 kids at 64 clubs and we'll have something to keep them happy and bringing them in. I will be working on it asap.

I do have faith in Dr. Dave's BU shots and Bob Jewett's drills as well as others, but the trick would be to keep this is as simple as possible so it boils down to only 3 skills similar to pass, punt & kick or drive, chip & putt. I think the beauty of this format is the simplicity and doesn't take too much time.

I think the qualifying tourneys (sectional & regionals) may use more drills to determine the best of the groups, but the finals would be simpler. Following all of the drills in BU would be too much and take too much time.

Think of 3 main skills of pools that are needed to succeed and we may have our answer. (i.e. shot making of some sort; position play & maybe banks)?
