Give them a break. It doesn't start until Saturday. :D

OK, it is now Saturday and I'm ready for some reports, on the players and the runs.

Well, maybe it's a little early yet, but I hope Andy has his computer with him and will be letting us know.

I hope to be there tomorrow to see the late rounds for myself. :D

Saturday's events

Hi All,

Sorry, been away from my computer for a couple days.

The field was full with 40 players. The tournament committee agreed on 5 skill levels with ABCDE players. One player from each skill level was randomly drawn into the 8 groups to make the round robin very balanced.

80 total matches to 100 were played today! Talk about busy...and I had to squeeze my 4 matches in as well.

The high run of the day was Mike Davis with an even 100 after a first rack safety or foul against a local player.

The top 2 players of each group have advanced to tomorrow. Sunday will be a seeded 16 player single elimination event. Races to 125 and then 150 in the semifinal and final. Won/loss record and ball differential was used to determine the top 2 players from each group. Seeding for Sunday is the group winner get seeds 1-8 with 2nd place finishers getting 9-16. Ball differential was used again to determine exact seeds. Here's how it all shook out:

1. Ryan McCreesh (one of 2 qualifier winners of our previous event in April, AZ member)
2. Zion Zvi (the other qualifier in April)
3. Mike Davis (Mosconi Cup Team member, AZ member)
4. Ed Deska (league leader at Bill & Billies)
5. Steve Lipsky (New York superstar and AZ member)
6. Danny Harriman (drove from Missouri! AZ member)
7. Danny Barouty (Another NY superstar)
8. Mark Ford (Only B level player to knock off an A from winning group)
9. Ed Hodan (unknown to me but has won a Comet 14.1 event!)
10. Steve Lillis (beat me in last match of day despite my comeback bid!)
11. Shaun Wilkie (1st 14.1 event - came out of C skill level)
12. Brian O'Donnell (playing again)
13. Joe Cataldi (only other C skill level to make it)
14. Brett Stottlemyer (3 way tie for group - in on ball differential)
15. Marty Ciccia (playing well)
16. Ron Williams (in on ball differential for 3 way tie at 2-2)

Tomorrow is going to be great. Sorry no internet connectivity so you'll have to wait til I get home around 10:00 pm. Or someone can PM me with a phone number and I can call in results)

Thanks to Timberly, we'll have results during the day tomorrow. Rounds are 10 am, 12:30, 3:00 and 6:00.

Damn, that sounds like alot of fun down there, just a measly 60 minutes or so south of me. I really like playing 14.1 and wouldn't have minded making a donation. Unfortunately, my schedule doesn't allow me to play pool that much anymore, but I still enjoy 14.1 because I don't have to shoot that many hard shots. Though, I must admit that even on my best day, I am an average 14.1 player at best.

GOOD LUCK STEVE!!!!

first event or not, isn't a little strange to have shaun wilkie in the c level? and joe cataldi for that matter? wilkie is a strong regional champion and cataldi is not too far behind. perhaps i missed the point? were the players not categorized by ability?

Although players are champion 9-ball players, that certainly doesn't make them champion straight pool players. It is definitely a different set of skills, to a point.

Keep in mind, the skill levels ABCDE were only used to put players into groups. I'm sure, in a lot of cases, this ranking was arbitrary.

This is not a handicapped tournament and these players did not get any advantage by being ranked as a C player, rather than a higher ranking. They still had to finish as one of the top two, in their group, to move on to the Sunday rounds.

i see....just thought it was a little strange, although it still sounds like a terrific event. i guess that given the talent that is present and the fact that it's an A-E scale, that making some higher level 9-ball players C's is not that outrageous. anyway......

GOOD LUCK STEVE!!

I am tuning in for an update...well?!?!

Iwent to the room late last night and was hoping to see some people matched up. NOTHING.

Did see Harriman playing 3c on one of the beautiful 10 footers . Was going to ask him for a little spot and play a set for all the bills on me, but didn't- coz he was far too nice and talked to everyone on the way out the door!- sorry to not have donated to you, Danny!
